Gotta turn on the blower for at least five minutes before firing up that engine.

Are you telling me that when starting a boat there's a step you must follow or else everything just explodes?

u/Pdub77 4d ago
Not a guarantee, but definitely a possibility. Gas fumes can collect in the hull around the engine and ignite when the engine starts. All boats like this have a blower fan to run before you start the engine to mitigate that risk.

u/BravoLimaDelta 4d ago
It makes sense but it's like, maybe that should just be incorporated into the ignition process. Like it won't turn over until a blowing has been performed or something.
Based on the number of times I've left something sitting on the roof of my car and driven away I would definitely die in a fiery boat explosion.

If the blower goes out, you can still manually air it out. But if it the ignition is tied to the blower and the blower fails, you aren't going anywhere.
That latter situation might be less than ideal if say you sailed out to some remote location.

An overuse wouldn’t be difficult to install. Just make it slightly less convenient than waiting and it’d be fine.

u/TheeMrBlonde 4d ago
In the latter situation, would exploding be preferential to being stranded?

Humans put a multimillion dollar, high precision instrumentation the size of a Volkswagen in a 500 yard radius patch on mars. I’m pretty sure something could be engineered up.

I think I’d rather be stuck in a remote location for a while than die in an explosion in a remote location.

Even more so here because they are at a fuel dock. So likely just fueled up, didn't turn on blower fan. Pretty much very video I've seen has been at a fuel dock, maybe that has more to do with camera's being a fuel docks, but seems like a relevant correlation.

u/celticFcNo1 4d ago
Well not really, it all depends on the set up of the boat as to the level of risk you face. It is not normal for it to explode and there has been a catastrophic error somewhere to make this possible. Like the other commenter said it could be a build up of gases due to this being a small enclosed boat. This could of came from many different sources. They could be filling the boat with fuel, there could be a spillage somewhere. The batteries might gas out and explode next to the plastic fuel tank. The engines fuel pipes might leak which atomises the fuel as it leaves which will guarantee an explosion if left untreated. On a ship you need to be aware of everything because it is a very fucking dangerous place.

Hey this, it isn't a car. I don't even want to get into all the stuff you have to do to safely start a plane. Not so vehicles are as simple as we've made cars.

Sorta…
These boats have gasoline engines, gas fumes and a spark is a problem… you should have engine room blowers the vent it out

u/Raise-Emotional 3d ago
This was driven into me to hard as a kid. Never ever ever turn the key without the blower clearing the gas fumes first.
This point was further driven home when we launched onto the Missouri River. There was a line at the boat ramp to launch. We launched and headed down river maybe 100 yards. The guys who put in just behind us clearly didn't use the blower. We heard the boom and I saw a Shockwave come by the boat. We turned to look back in time to see a man absolutely FLYING through the air like a Russian tank turret! He hit the water and it turned into a body recovery.

Blower is used on vessels with inboard engines to evacuate the explosive fumes. This may be one of those times someone attempted to start vessel without using the blower. Happens more than you think.

Explosive fumes? So gasoline engine?
4
u/SilentxxSpecter 4d ago
Yeah, if fumes build up with the right amount of oxygen it becomes explosive when ignited.
3
u/elcaudillo86 4d ago
Hmm. Interesting. Never used an inboard gasoline engine in a boat. Seems dangerous.

u/SilentxxSpecter 4d ago
I could be wrong, it might be diesel. I've just seen enough gasoline bombs in my life and the explosion looked very similar. Source( rednecks in rural areas are simple beings who love to blow shit up)

Id like to think the person who went missing sneaked away to start a new life as a drapes salesman.

"Mr White, we don't have to cook in the RV anymore. I got us a fuckin' boat, Yo!"
"God Dammit, Jesse! We don't know a damned thing about boats. Do you expect us to cook while trying to learn to drive this thing? Do you EVER think, Jesse?"

I imagine the missing person is the one that got thrown off the back. Looks like they hit the dock on the way down too.

“One person is missing”
So it’s still called “missing” even when a head injury off the dock on the way into the water is on camera?

Gas boat at the fuel dock. Needed just a tad more blower time before hitting the ole starter.
Hope they all are OK.

No. Don't be stupid. Neither cocaine or underage kids are flammable or explosive.

That must be the biggest fart I’ve seen this year. Smoking while farting is strongly discouraged.

I need to know the details. Like, was it a horrible accident, or as someone else said did someone piss off the wrong person??
