Discussion Community Highlight: Custom Awards!
As you may already have noticed, over the past few days our subreddit has had some exciting new awards assigned to it, tailored especially to r/cats and based on a selection of the old custom awards you may remember!
These awards were designed especially for our community by a team of artists at reddit and are available solely in this subreddit.
We are helping to test out this new feature here and the idea is that in the future subreddit-specific awards may come with fun new features unlockable by subreddits and community participants. For now, there is a leaderboard we can unlock:
Awarding posts and comments with one of these custom designs will of course come with a nifty little animation on your screen, just like any of the other newest version of awards. Perhaps the best part of this new system is that these custom awards are all pretty affordable. Unlike the previous subreddit-specific awards which started at 500 coins you can now already choose to apply a custom award for 15 coins. I just think that's neat.
At r/Cats we are pretty excited to be a part of this trial program. Giving subreddits access to individual customisation shows that we are a unique community with its own space on reddit. You now have the choice to award a post or comment that you think is extra-special with a design especially created for us.
Thank you to reddit admin u/SmEllen_Fresh who was our contact during the development stage and all the other reddit admins part of the dev team for this new feature!
We hope you all will enjoy this new option as much as we do.
From all of us at r/Cats, thank you for making this subreddit the special place that it is!

Advice I feel so bad leaving him home alone for 12-14 hours a day / night.
Shift work and a cat. He is 1 1/2 and goes absolutely crazy when I get home. But after a night set I just go right to sleep and this little guy just wants to play. I feel guilty but I don’t want to give him away, then I’d have no one. But maybe he would be happier.

Cat Picture - OC "I is Christmas present"
I just wanted to share my Luna girl being comfortable under the tree. It's been up less than 24 hours, and she's gotten comfortable.
Mourning/Loss I lost my baby Zorro
My sweet baby Zorro, Who will drive us crazy with your zoomies? Who will climb the highest wardrobe in the house and then meow for help to get down?
My sweet baby Zorro, Who will look at with those grumpy eyes demanding cuddles and pets? Who will climb not jus in my lap, but literally on my chest taking pets for hours?
My sweetheart Zorro, What about the pigeons and sparrows who come without fail to our windows knowing that you'll swat at them through the window glass?
My sweet baby Zorro, Who will steal food from the table and leftover chicken bones from plates and run away?
My sweet baby Zorro, Who will fight ninja's cute aggression and put him in his place?
My sweet darling Zorro, Who will comfort mommy when she cries by sitting near her and grooming your long fur, coz who can be upset when this absolutely good looking boy is showing off in front of you?
My sweet Jaanu Zorro, Who will scratch the new dining table chairs we got? Who will climb the curtains? Who will force us to play and cuddle and pet you every moment we are at home?
My sweet baby Zorro, your daddy and I are devastated. We love you so much. Nothing will be the same without you. I'm sorry we couldn't save you. We love you so much Zorro.

Cat Picture - OC Just wanted to share my little Fig’s story because I’m proud of the lil guy
So I already had two kittens before I adopted Fig - my other two were brother and sister from the same litter and were around 3 months old when I took in Fig.
We got him because a friend of a friend had a cat that had fallen pregnant and Fig was the last kitten left, and they were being really weird about getting rid of him, saying that if no one took him (for free, they were not selling him) then they were just gonna dump him at a shelter and leave him on the doorstep. I wasn’t really in a position to take in another kitten but I’d rather have the added expense than think about what the alternative could be and where he could end up, so I said I’d take him. We were assured he was 8 weeks old and that he had had flea and worming treatment and he was super healthy.
When I went to collect him, I’d expected to be going into the house, but the people giving him away were stood outside their house in the cold and dark with this kitten and just handed him over and said bye. He was NOT 8 weeks old. I got him home and he still had that way of walking that very young kittens have when they have only just started to venture out of their birthing box, like super close to the ground, really wobbly they look like their legs aren’t fully extended yet. He also clearly had worms as his stomach was extremely distended, and he was crawling with fleas.
I took him to see a vet and they said he was probably only 5 weeks old, and my heart broke for him. They’d been feeding him adult cat food too.
I got kitten milk powder for him and gave him a mix of that and some kitten pouches too, and honestly he was such a good little guy. He was so brave and so curious and affectionate, but my other two kittens did not want to know him. He was so desperate to be close to them, especially my girl kitten who I think he kind of wanted to be his new mum. But they hissed at him and really excluded him. But he still just kept on going and tried his hardest to fit in with them (spoiler alert, they get on REALLY well now!)
Despite having a very difficult start in life, Fig is now just over three months old, his weight is perfect for his age, he no longer has worms or fleas and he is a very happy little guy who just live his life to the fullest. He does still suckle on things like my dressing gown, which is cute but also makes me sad that he missed out on so much time being able to suckle on his mother than he needs to do this to self soothe. I think about his mother a lot and what life looks like for her, and all his siblings too.
But here are some pictures of Fig - first pic is just after we brought him home, second one is from a month ago and the third was taken a few days ago. He’s a very handsome chap!

Cat Picture - OC I got my Herschel back after 7 years
Nine years ago, I found Herschel in the street as a tiny kitten. I took him in and we formed an amazing bond. Two years later, I had to escape an abusive relationship because I feared for my life. I was moving to a different continent, and my living situation was uncertain, so I left Herschel with a friend. Unfortunately, before I was able to get him back, my ex got him. Ever since then I've been wishing and hoping for an opportunity to get him. I have a nice house now and all the means to take care of him. I had almost accepted it wasn't going to happen, and then the opportunity presented itself when my ex went to jail. I immediately got on a plane to get my baby back. He was living in bad conditions in the disgustingly messy and dangerous apartment my ex left. He remembered me, and after the initial shock of seeing me again, our bond is strong as ever and he's happy and healthy.

Cat Picture - OC What is my cat?
Hello, so for ages I’ve been trying to figure out what breed my cat is. For a while I assumed Russian blue, but after watching more videos I can definitely tell now she is not a Russian blue. The next closest resemblance is that of a Korat, but I am told that there are very limited breeders & they tend to be vocal, which my cat can be sometimes, but I wouldn’t say she does it enough to describe her as vocal.
She was from a shelter of sorts & we got her when she was a kitten, I don’t think we ever asked what she was.
For context, I am from the UK, unsure if that helps with specific breeds.
