Are you telling me that when starting a boat there's a step you must follow or else everything just explodes?

Not a guarantee, but definitely a possibility. Gas fumes can collect in the hull around the engine and ignite when the engine starts. All boats like this have a blower fan to run before you start the engine to mitigate that risk.
