Are you telling me that when starting a boat there's a step you must follow or else everything just explodes?

Well not really, it all depends on the set up of the boat as to the level of risk you face. It is not normal for it to explode and there has been a catastrophic error somewhere to make this possible. Like the other commenter said it could be a build up of gases due to this being a small enclosed boat. This could of came from many different sources. They could be filling the boat with fuel, there could be a spillage somewhere. The batteries might gas out and explode next to the plastic fuel tank. The engines fuel pipes might leak which atomises the fuel as it leaves which will guarantee an explosion if left untreated. On a ship you need to be aware of everything because it is a very fucking dangerous place.
