This was driven into me to hard as a kid. Never ever ever turn the key without the blower clearing the gas fumes first.
This point was further driven home when we launched onto the Missouri River. There was a line at the boat ramp to launch. We launched and headed down river maybe 100 yards. The guys who put in just behind us clearly didn't use the blower. We heard the boom and I saw a Shockwave come by the boat. We turned to look back in time to see a man absolutely FLYING through the air like a Russian tank turret! He hit the water and it turned into a body recovery.

Gotta turn on the blower for at least five minutes before firing up that engine.
