Mine is FBO, catless with a modified STI turbo. Been like that for a long time. She definitly piston slaps when she's cold but I always let her warm up for 15-20 mins before driving her anywhere. It's become a part of my life now haha

What do you do to maintain it?

Oil changes every 3k miles, always check oil every few hundred miles or after long trips. And doing services on time, nearly due for a timing belt, doing tranny fluid and rear diff fluid every 50k ish miles.

Oh yeah, well my Yota went fer 400k and all I ever did was an oil change every 10,000 miles and tires.
/s
Great job man! You don't get a car to 300k without doing something correct!

u/Derpin___Around LGT 1d ago
Classic Yota behavior haha.
These cars are reliable as long as they have oil in them, a lot of people really don't understand that. I know shit happens but for the most part, preventative maintience and learning your car will go a long way.

I just got in an argument with a customers who says they will do 10k oil changes because it's all "bolagna" as I had a deconstructed engine from sludge build up due to lengthy oil change intervals less than 10 feet away from them.....

I got into an argument with a friend years ago now who did 25k mile oil changes on his Ford focus ST because he switched to Amsoil and the filter says good for 25k on it. I'm like "bruh". It didn't last as long as he'd hoped haha

Have you always done oil changes every 3k miles since day one or when the car started to get old ?

u/Derpin___Around LGT 1d ago
I didn't own her since day one, I bought her with 170k on it but I've done them since I bought her

Original engine and transmission? Nice. Also that is a sharp dash, looks great!
2
u/Derpin___Around LGT 1d ago
Transmission is original, engine is not. Replaced with JDM used engine at 172k. Hole in turbo inlet (underneath) and sucked in debris and small rocks causing turbo blades to come apart and turbo blade chunks in the cylinder lead to problems.
Lowered suspension, replaced all axles at some point and replaced all wheel bearings with timkin bearings.
Legacy dash is just art in my opinion.

Wow!. I'm about to hit 256,000 miles!. I bought it from an older lady. She was the only owner with 218,328 miles on the clock with brand new tires and clutch!. Engine, 5 Speed Manual transmission, Turbo are original. Oil changes every 3,000 miles, Did a list of things over my 4 year ownership on it to keep it running (Timing belt, Spark Plugs, Radiator, Axles, ect.).

Don't forget tranny fluid and rear diff fluid changes. Your front diff and trans fluid are the same in the manual and both filled from the trans dipstick.

I just did the tranny fluid earlier today actually! Was going to do the rear diff also but ran out time so it should be done over the weekend!.

I owned one of these on finance it didn't drive right from the day I drove it off the lot, primary turbo blew up under warranty they said they put in a new one a year in lost compression in cylinder 1. Out of warranty, I bought a second hand long block and had it rebuilt, turbos never worked, in the 5 years I owned it I spent so much money fixing smaller issues, long story short it died and lost compression in 3 cylinders and blew up, from the day I drove it off the lot it was a 2002 to the time it blew up it cost me around $19k after paying off finance and interest, I swore I'd never buy one again, I now own a 2009 STI and a 2009 370z, I've never had an issue with these or any other car I've owned after the legacy GT, looks like I got a bad egg.

Primary turbo? Was there a twin turbo version of this car?
1
u/AdSad1403 1d ago
Yes the legacy GT, TT I'm in new Zealand but you can google legacy GT TT, you can have a read up.
1
u/Derpin___Around LGT 1d ago
I'll have to check it out. The states didn't get any TT EJs as far as I know. Being a small displacement engine, I never really understood the reason for a TT set up, from an engineering perspective.

u/AdSad1403 1d ago
I've just sent you a screenshot with the information you need.

u/Derpin___Around LGT 1d ago
Ah, I see. They got rid of TT when the fourth gen Leggy came out. That's interesting, I kind if wanted the diesel version of the outback when I found out that was a thing that happened.

U bought a POS big time
2
u/Derpin___Around LGT 1d ago
What makes you say that?

u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS 1d ago
He didn’t check or change his oil and ragged on the go pedal hard. Now he thinks turbo Subarus are not dependable POS.
Basically he is stupid and shouldn’t own a car.
