Other my first sim racing injury
turn one at VIR, two wide, i stomp my race spec birks into my loadcell utilizing all 200kg its rated for (im a beast). my race spec birk clad foot blasts my poor brake pedal out of my wood rig proving how powerful i am. i hear the all too familiar sound of a hole being punched into drywall, my race spec clad birk foot collapses under the pressure and folds into my clutch pedal. boys i am limping right now what the hell i was just playing a game
obligatory rig set up in last pic. happy holidays! ill be back iracing, i will be back.

Bro you used wood screws to secure a 200kg load cell? Drill some holes and use some bolts, washers, and nuts.

u/SWEATSHORTMIZZY 1d ago
yea thats on me, big time dumbass move

u/Top_Breadfruit_5150 20h ago
On one hand, good job on being accepting of your mistake, and on the other, dumbass. /s

u/IsbellDL 22h ago
It's not that wood screws are bad. They just need to be long enough, large enough diameter, & in a strong enough wood. Also, always use flat washers with slotted holes.
3
u/Saneless 19h ago
Oh wow, I wouldn't trust these little ones for an empty shelf made out of hollow wood let alone an LC brake
0
u/LetsGoWithMike 18h ago
Why? Through bolt it
2
u/IsbellDL 16h ago
Not always an option. I agree when it is though.
3
u/LetsGoWithMike 15h ago
I just visualized some dude screwing his new load cells to the hard wood floor lol

u/Swizzel-Stixx Assetto Corsa 14h ago
By the same token, through bolting a hardwood floor, or anything to a hardwood floor really π

u/nkings10 1d ago
I was looking at the screws as well, they look like hardware store sheet metal screws.
Order 12.9 grade zinc plated bolts.

u/OddBranch132 18h ago
Agree with this after seeing the rust comment below. Or at least get some oil to coat some SAE 5 bolts.
OP: Screws are such a bad choice for this regardless. Sheet rock screws will shear under load and wood screws are purposely designed to flex under load.Β
1
u/VicMan73 16h ago
Washers, bolts, and nuts should have prevented this from happening. Some people love to live dangerously.

u/LatterCar6168 15h ago
The problem is not using wooden screws, the problem is using the wrong size ones and shit wood for the plate

thank you, i needed that. My ego has suffered the most damage this evening
10
u/ussaro 1d ago
If youβre using M6 bolts, theyβre supposed to withstand 4kN shear force each. You, my friend, didnβt skip leg day in 2024. Bravo.

u/Racer013 Starving Driver, Will Race for Food | TX 458, T3PA 1d ago
Description says that it's a wood rig, and judging by the damage to the floor tray it looks like the bolts/screws were ripped out the wood. It's not nearly as impressive as shearing an M6 bolt clean off, but it's still quite a feat. It's probably time for OP to upgrade to an aluminum rig.
18
u/Manu_RvP 23h ago
He used very tiny wooden screws. So that makes it quite less impressive and more redneck engineering.
5
u/ussaro 23h ago
Youβre correct, didnβt noticed it. In this case the only way would be using pass through bolts with nuts and washers on the other side, never self tapping screws.
Still, certified ogre.

German? Also, it's definitely time to upgrade to a proper metal rig if you're trying to use 200kg loadcells.

u/adrosse 1d ago
Germans have no dry wall, pure brick! π§±

u/SWEATSHORTMIZZY 1d ago

u/GCU_Problem_Child 1d ago
Didn't know you guys also did the Birks. Should be noted we do, in fact, do drywall here in Germany. Not everywhere to be sure, but we definitely do have it.
7
u/SWEATSHORTMIZZY 1d ago
Birks aren't too common here but I absolutely swear by them, your country does great work. In regards to the drywall, thanks for the fun fact, i also assumed it was all brick.
I will be searching for an aluminum rig and hopefully have it built soon. It would be a shame for my brake to fall out again mid race. Thanks for the advice!

Wood isnβt the issue, how you mounted your pedals to it is. Iβd try to get the hole all the way through the wood and secure the pedals with some threaded rods that are screwed down from the bottom. These puny little wood screws youβve got on there right now sure arenβt enough to withstand your insane amounts of raw force!

u/amx40pleb 1d ago
last time i got downvoted when i suggested for someone to look for aluminum rig instead of wooden one for safety reasons :)

Woodworker here
Swap those screws out for bolts. I only use that size screw when nothing else will work cos theyβre a pain in the ass to get them to grip anything

I feel you. I broke a NLR WS 2.0 with my left foot when i tried to use my VRS pedals on it (even with blue spring). Some metal literally snapped and they've replaced it under warranty.

Take it easy hulk. Next time use 5% of your mighty force. Wouldnβt want to shred the race spec birks next.
2
u/Need_For_Speed73 23h ago
Is that a wood plate and those wood screws? In this case that was just an accident waiting to happen. :O
Hope you will recover soon and your pedals haven't been damaged. Now go get some aluminium profiles and build yourself a proper rig.
2
u/JigPuppyRush 23h ago
This is all self inflicted imho, you shouldβve attached the pedal better and worn better shoes.

u/pro_n00b 22h ago
Bro was so excited to play he just grabbed the shortest screw he can find (should really be a bolt and nut here)
1
u/SWEATSHORTMIZZY 17h ago
exactly what happened lmao. i set it up last year with the screws as a temporary measure but they held so i thought i was in the clear. bigtime moron move
2
u/pro_n00b 16h ago
It happens. That was me with the g27 pedals back in the day with velcro. Only took few times rallying in GT5 for the accident to happen

Hey if you're Canadian, I just came across this the other day and plan on ordering it for my own rig too!

ill look into that! ive gotten quite a few comments about using bolts instead of tiny screws so I'll repair my rig like that first and then aluminum rig further down the line. Thanks for the share!

Bolts, washers, and nuts are your friends in this situation. Using wood screws on something that is impacted repeatedly will typically lead to failure. If you want to keep it so that you can adjust it from the top (no need for a wrench on the bottom), use T-nuts. Also, please use washers under the screw heads. Lock washers, too, if you're feeling fancy.

A wood rig. It's not a bad idea. You just need to reinforce the pedal plate, thicker block, maybe butcher block, use bolts, nuts, and washers. Don't quit, shake it off, and rebuild it.
2
u/jag0009 18h ago
So your pedals are mounted on a wooden platform? Do you run the screw thru the wood and secure it with a nut (or lock nut) on the other side of the wood?
2
u/SWEATSHORTMIZZY 13h ago
just a screw in the wood, dumb i knowπ. i bought some bolts today on the advice from other commentors and bolted the loadcell down properly

Idk what you are using as rig but stop using ph screws on sim racing stuff that's not gonna be good for you. Never go cheap on bolts in this hobby, I ruined a few good stuff by that.

Hahaha hope youβre better soon, if you sprained your ankle like it looks from your swelling comment you should let it improve for a week and then wear a lace up ankle brace for another 2 weeks beyond that. 3 weeks you should be good to stomp on that brake again!

Please and I am going to say again for anyone with a wood rig DO NOT screw directly into plywood or MDF it will fail. An easy trick to prevent this is run another solid piece of wood on the underside where the pedals are going to mount, something like a 2X4 or even better a 2*6 or 2*8. This will allow for the load to be spread out and the screws to actually grip into something. I would also have ran a lot more then the 4 screws on the pedals.
The rig looks sweet btw!

Or maybe you can tell me about all the racers you know driving in sandals?

β¦ seriously! Im surprised they didnβt fail sooner. You had like a whole 3/8β in the wood.
