Hello! Welcome to the last Weekly Recap of 2024! I hope you all had a lovely holiday if you celebrated Christmas, and if you didn't, I hope you had a great Wednesday or are currently enjoying a wonderful Hanukkah. I ended up with many Reese's trees and several bottles of wine. I am happy to report that they pair nicely with each other! X) And while I am definitely still in holiday mode, let's see what we have for this week in regard to last week!
NEWS AND ISSUES
There is an experiment that is currently running some tests on in-app swiping gestures for iOS, including the comment collapse swipe. I responded to this post with this information.
Some users are experiencing an issue with iOS where the buttons become unresponsive. Our friend u/Goldennuggets-3000 made a post here in r/help and I crossposted over in r/bugs. A fix is in the works!
There was an issue on the new UI where if you edited a comment to include an image that it would show a link to the image instead of the image itself. Many thanks to u/Rostingu2 for bringing this up! I got it in front of the correct team and they got right to work. It should be working better now, but at this time, images that were already posted and were made into a link will still be a link.
Some users are unable to load chat. The chat team reached out to me about this and let me know the situation and I made posts here and here to let you know the situation! They are working on it (and it might be fixed by the time you read this)! The workaround is to use mobile data instead of wifi. This, apparently, does not work for everyone, so unfortunately, it's not a guaranteed fix. I'm sorry about that!
No update to the apps this week. It looks like the next updates will be January 13 (if I'm reading the schedule correctly).
If you're seeing a pixelated banana on your app, that's your Reddit Recap and you can tap it to view your stats for the year! This will not be around forever and when it's gone, it's gone! And we're getting closer to the end! Tap now! Don't delay!
ONGOING ISSUES
If your account gets the "server error" banner or you can't update your profile, I can fix that sometimes! Just let me know and I'll take a look and get you all taken care of! Please note that I cannot give any information or assist with any account unless contacted directly from that account.
If no one else can see your posts or comments across Reddit (not just in one sub) and you are unable to post here in r/help, you can file an appeal here.
Please check the Help Center to see if you can find the answer to your question there. Also, check this sub for stickied posts regarding outages and downtime.
If your account is marked as NSFW and it is not NSFW, you can check out this Help Center article for information on how to change it back. If you're unable to change it back, feel free to make a post and we'll help you out. (Team effort, this one is! Thanks to all of the helpers who flag me for this.)
IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT 2FA 🚨
2FA adds an extra layer of security to your Reddit account. You can learn more about 2fa in this Help Center article.
Once 2FA is enabled, Reddit can’t help you regain access if you lose your authenticator app or backup codes. Keep them safe!
So if you're switching phones, plan ahead!
Getting a new phone for the holidays? Don’t forget to disable 2FA on your old device first and re-enable it on your new one. Skipping this step could lock you out of your account.
Best Practices for Keeping Your Account Safe
1. Save Your Backup Codes Securely
When setting up 2FA, you’ll receive backup codes. Store them in a secure location (not on your phone). You can access codes anytime in your account settings as long as you're in your account.
2. Use a Cloud Backup App
If you’re not sure which authenticator app to use, we’d suggest 2FAS or Google Authenticator for standalone apps. Or you can use password managers with built-in 2fa management likeBitwarden or 1Password.
3. Use Single Sign-On (SSO)
Connecting your Reddit account to Google or Apple SSO provides additional login options which can help you regain access if your 2FA fails.
Pro Tip: Take 5 minutes now to review your 2FA setup. A little preparation today can save you from a lot of frustration and heartbreak tomorrow.
WEEKLY STATISTICS
Over the past 7 days, r/help had 1,491 posts, which is 409 fewer posts and a 21.6% decrease from the 1,900 posts in the previous 7 days. And there were 4,217 comments which is up 234 comments for a 24% decrease from the 5,516 comments the previous seven days. 3,800 new users subscribed to r/help last week (up 900 users from the previous week of 2,900) and there were over 1.2 million views, which is down by around 300k from the 1.5 million last week. These decreases are likely due to the holiday and I'm happy to see that people were somewhere other than r/help!
TOP POSTS
A user had discovered redditmedia.com and was wondering what was up. Super mod and helper u/ChimpyChompies put it quite well when they replied "I can't explain exactly what it is, but seems harmless enough. Logging in to redditmedia.com just redirects to reddit.com." They are correct! It is harmless and it does redirect to reddit.com.
redditmedia.com serves various reddit content and media, and that helps optimize Reddit. If you visit redditmedia.com directly, it redirects to reddit.com because it's not intended for direct user interaction. It's more of a content delivery domain.
A user was having difficulty opening their chats. This is the issue that I mentioned about and you can read about here. Always a good idea to search the sub or check the most recent Recap or two to see if there is an ongoing issue that you may be experiencing.
A user was having difficulty deleting their account. If you encounter this issue, you can click here to delete your account from old Reddit and that should work much better. We are unable to delete accounts on your behalf.
Please know that any content you may have posted to Reddit won’t be deleted when your account is deleted. You’ll need to remove any content you want deleted before deleting your account.
Also, once an account is deleted, it cannot be reactivated. Deleting an account does not recycle the username.
