Admin Post Unresponsive navigation on iOS app

Hey folks,

We're aware of an issue on iOS where navigation buttons on the home feed become unresponsive after some scrolling. We're sorry this is happening, and the team is actively working on a fix.

In the meantime, restarting the app may temporarily restore functionality but not in all cases. We'll update here as soon as we roll out a fix.

Thanks!

Admin Post Weekly Recap | December 27, 2024

Upvotes

Hello! Welcome to the last Weekly Recap of 2024! I hope you all had a lovely holiday if you celebrated Christmas, and if you didn't, I hope you had a great Wednesday or are currently enjoying a wonderful Hanukkah. I ended up with many Reese's trees and several bottles of wine. I am happy to report that they pair nicely with each other! X) And while I am definitely still in holiday mode, let's see what we have for this week in regard to last week!

NEWS AND ISSUES

  • There is an experiment that is currently running some tests on in-app swiping gestures for iOS, including the comment collapse swipe. I responded to this post with this information.

  • Some users are experiencing an issue with iOS where the buttons become unresponsive. Our friend u/Goldennuggets-3000 made a post here in r/help and I crossposted over in r/bugs. A fix is in the works!

  • There was an issue on the new UI where if you edited a comment to include an image that it would show a link to the image instead of the image itself. Many thanks to u/Rostingu2 for bringing this up! I got it in front of the correct team and they got right to work. It should be working better now, but at this time, images that were already posted and were made into a link will still be a link.

  • Some users are unable to load chat. The chat team reached out to me about this and let me know the situation and I made posts here and here to let you know the situation! They are working on it (and it might be fixed by the time you read this)! The workaround is to use mobile data instead of wifi. This, apparently, does not work for everyone, so unfortunately, it's not a guaranteed fix. I'm sorry about that!

  • No update to the apps this week. It looks like the next updates will be January 13 (if I'm reading the schedule correctly).

  • If you're seeing a pixelated banana on your app, that's your Reddit Recap and you can tap it to view your stats for the year! This will not be around forever and when it's gone, it's gone! And we're getting closer to the end! Tap now! Don't delay!

ONGOING ISSUES

  • If your account gets the "server error" banner or you can't update your profile, I can fix that sometimes! Just let me know and I'll take a look and get you all taken care of! Please note that I cannot give any information or assist with any account unless contacted directly from that account.

  • If no one else can see your posts or comments across Reddit (not just in one sub) and you are unable to post here in r/help, you can file an appeal here.

  • Please check the Help Center to see if you can find the answer to your question there. Also, check this sub for stickied posts regarding outages and downtime.

  • If your account is marked as NSFW and it is not NSFW, you can check out this Help Center article for information on how to change it back. If you're unable to change it back, feel free to make a post and we'll help you out. (Team effort, this one is! Thanks to all of the helpers who flag me for this.)

IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT 2FA 🚨

2FA adds an extra layer of security to your Reddit account. You can learn more about 2fa in this Help Center article.

Once 2FA is enabled, Reddit can’t help you regain access if you lose your authenticator app or backup codes. Keep them safe!

So if you're switching phones, plan ahead!

Getting a new phone for the holidays? Don’t forget to disable 2FA on your old device first and re-enable it on your new one. Skipping this step could lock you out of your account.

Best Practices for Keeping Your Account Safe

1. Save Your Backup Codes Securely

When setting up 2FA, you’ll receive backup codes. Store them in a secure location (not on your phone). You can access codes anytime in your account settings as long as you're in your account.

2. Use a Cloud Backup App

If you’re not sure which authenticator app to use, we’d suggest 2FAS or Google Authenticator for standalone apps. Or you can use password managers with built-in 2fa management likeBitwarden or 1Password.

3. Use Single Sign-On (SSO)

Connecting your Reddit account to Google or Apple SSO provides additional login options which can help you regain access if your 2FA fails.

Pro Tip: Take 5 minutes now to review your 2FA setup. A little preparation today can save you from a lot of frustration and heartbreak tomorrow.

WEEKLY STATISTICS

Over the past 7 days, r/help had 1,491 posts, which is 409 fewer posts and a 21.6% decrease from the 1,900 posts in the previous 7 days. And there were 4,217 comments which is up 234 comments for a 24% decrease from the 5,516 comments the previous seven days. 3,800 new users subscribed to r/help last week (up 900 users from the previous week of 2,900) and there were over 1.2 million views, which is down by around 300k from the 1.5 million last week. These decreases are likely due to the holiday and I'm happy to see that people were somewhere other than r/help!

TOP POSTS

A user had discovered redditmedia.com and was wondering what was up. Super mod and helper u/ChimpyChompies put it quite well when they replied "I can't explain exactly what it is, but seems harmless enough. Logging in to redditmedia.com just redirects to reddit.com." They are correct! It is harmless and it does redirect to reddit.com.

redditmedia.com serves various reddit content and media, and that helps optimize Reddit. If you visit redditmedia.com directly, it redirects to reddit.com because it's not intended for direct user interaction. It's more of a content delivery domain.

A user was having difficulty opening their chats. This is the issue that I mentioned about and you can read about here. Always a good idea to search the sub or check the most recent Recap or two to see if there is an ongoing issue that you may be experiencing.

A user was having difficulty deleting their account. If you encounter this issue, you can click here to delete your account from old Reddit and that should work much better. We are unable to delete accounts on your behalf.

Please know that any content you may have posted to Reddit won’t be deleted when your account is deleted. You’ll need to remove any content you want deleted before deleting your account.

Also, once an account is deleted, it cannot be reactivated. Deleting an account does not recycle the username.

So embarrassing to see them. They're like a reminder "hey, look at how much time you wasted scrolling, be proud of yourself!" with every single Reddit major shareholder standing behind your back and patting your shoulder for being a good, good source of ad revenue you are!

Rule 8

Can someone from the admin team please explain what I actually did wrong?

First I get a message where it's saying I'm abusing the reporting tool. I've only ever used it to report posts that clearly don't follow the rules of the sub I've reported the posts on. That message was an automated message.

I then ask what types of reports, or where, I have been 'abusing'. I basically get a canned response saying I did something wrong, but no "what" at all.

I mean if you want users to stop using the report tool to report stuff like spam and rule violations, this is a great way! I'm trying to contribute to the subs I visit. Guess I'll completely stop doing that then.

Also your rule 8 doesn't even mention the report tool. For your information.

Sincerely; a pissed of Reddit user getting a slap on the wrist for trying to help.

Only this account restored after incorrect auto-closure of all Alts. Next steps?

Upvotes

[Posting here on the basis of the Reddit Help Center advising that if my question isn't answered there, I should post a request in u/help ]

This account was recently closed by the automatic moderation, for an alleged content violation. Then, all my Alts were also closed on the basis of the actions on this account.

After I challenged that decision, a human found that the automated closure was unjustified, and restored this account.

But still, all my other accounts remain closed. Any attempt to address this via the Help Centre gets nowhere.

It doesn't make sense that an incorrect automated action would apply to all accounts, but that when the decision was found to be incorrect, only this one would be restored.

Can anyone suggest some advice (or, if this is not the correct sub, a better place to inquire on)?

Many thanks.

Hello. Why is my account marked NSFW, thogh I dont post any mature content, and my settings protect me from this content. So when I try to turn off this setting, that marks my content as NSFW, still doesnt work. NSFW

Hide chats can't be reversed anymore

Previous behavior:

  • Hide chat
  • User sends another message
  • Chat reappears
  • You send a message and resume chat
  • Chat never goes away unless you re-hide it

Current behavior:

  • Hide chat
  • User sends another message
  • You send a message and resume chat
  • Chat disappears and does not reappear until user sends another message

This really sucks because if you want to resume the chat, you can't really continue because it auto-hides. If I never want to chat with them again, blocking is the way to do it. But if I just hide it, I want to be able to resume.

Not sure why there's a change in behavior.

Profile Android

Hi, around this time last year I made an account using my mobile number, I didn't at the time have any other social media like Facebook or anything and I thought I set a password but tbh I never had to log out or in so didn't think too much of it.

A week ago I sent my phone off to be repaired as the screen needed to be replaced and before I sent it off, the shop asked me to reset my phone and delete everything (for obvious reasons) I have another phone and so I tried to log in again, using the same number I had set my account up with before.. And it created me a new account, which is this account.

I've already lost my 250 day streak and I'm really annoyed I can't post in most subs and can't be arsed to build karma again on this acc, when I already have one with 10k (not that I'm overly bothered about the amount itself but still a waste of time and I have already established myself in certain subs, I can't remember all of them and I also had chats which I now can't access.

Can someone help me please?

Videos won't stop playing unless I quit the app

Upvotes

When I click to play a video on a post, the video plays. I can pause it. But when I go back to the feed, the video keeps playing again forever unless I quit the app. It will even continue playing if I open another video so that the audio from both videos plays at the same time. It's been happening for years. I have deleted the app and reinstalled but it doesn't help. I am using the app on ios.

Posting Picture disappearing while trying to comment right before upload on app on Android. How do I stop this?

Upvotes

The app knows my picture is still in the post because I do not see the add photo icon appearing again after picture disappears. The picture will not upload and has a star next to the end of the sentence once posted. This only happens after a certain amount of words on the post. I asked in another sub for help, but I can't respond to comments. Someone said this is happening to them in another sub I asked this in. Is this a common problem? Is this happening to anyone else?

The picture I'm trying to upload is a screenshot of Pokemon Go trying to upload picture to ask for help in the game. Here's what I'm trying to add on post with picture when the picture disappears Pokemon Go froze right at this moment just as I was trying to catch a Soble. What could I have done without closing it. I closed the app and lost every reward and Pokemon. Is there anyway to get my rewards back?*

Profile What does it mean if you can’t search for an account but Reddit data doesn’t show it as [deleted account]?

Upvotes

Title. Basically im looking for an account i’ve chatted with and i managed to find it through reddit data. However, upon searching for it using my profile, another profile, and anonymous browsing, I can’t find it. Does it mean the person deleted the account or did they block me or what?

Reddit Premium How do I thank someone for giving rewards?

I remember you used to be able to message people who awarded your posts/comments, but I can't find any option to do that anymore. I don't have premium, and I have tried to respond on both mobile and desktop. Help appreciated, thanks.

Edit: I just clicked on the award and clicked "most rewarded" and no users show up. Does that mean they all did it anonymously?

AutoMod answered 2 accounts with one email. Is that possible?

Recently I changed my reddit password and in the process Reddit asked me to select one account from 2 accounts. I wonder what is that second account and I note its username and after I open another browser and tries to forget password of the that username and when i checked my inbox I got the reset password email of the second account.

So now I have two account liked to same email. I tries to forget password using email ID then I get email for my main account.

So reddit can you tell me what is going with my account

I think it might have caused because I used reddit after a long time and forget that I have a reddit account with that email and I use continue with google button to register a new account with that email

Can reddit tell me how can i switch between those account easily cause I cannot find a way to do that

Mobile/App Reddit Community Links fail on Android

Search a community, copy the link, post it into a message, fails with "Community Not Found"

E.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/t5_2vifh/s/MZ9oiRSxF3

That's supposed to lead to OverEaters Anonymous

Fails with multiple community Links.

Not sure the platform is relevant. Did not test elsewhere.

The above link comes when we go to the community page, hit the overflow menu (three dots to right), take the overflow menu on that page then select Copy Link.

I'm not asking about platforms.

I'm not asking how to find a community.

I'm asking why a link provided by Reddit doesn't work on Reddit.

The goal is to provide a link to another Redditor either in a post or a PM.

I'm not asking about an alternative/'better' way of doing that.

I'm asking why this particular method doesn't work.

chat won't load at all (desktop website)

it won't let me put a pic on this post but basically when I click chat button, the chat box shows up except the entire thing is gray as if it is loading but never does. I can see the message box but not click on it or type in it and I can't see any of my past chats either. I've logged off and back on and checked my wifi but it still doesn't work. if I open the chat to a full new tab it says 'login failed. please try again'. does anyone know what this means?
