I'm an old school gamer nowadays. 34 years old and I probably gamed 31 of them. The only generation i missed out on was like DOS text games. I have dozens of games with 500+ hours in. Yet, the last 5+ years, only very few games have been able to keep my attention. Estimated like 1 out of 30ish I try will get more than an hour. I put tons of time into finding a game that seems like it'll interest me, and 10 minutes in I turn it off for good. I even couldn't get myself into Red Dead Redemption 2. Couple hours into it, it felt too slow and not fulfilling enough to continue. (this is a reflection towards myself, considering how universally beloved it is in the gaming community)
However, since I got a quest 3, I've been loving just about every game I try. I've only had it about 2 weeks, but every chance I get, I strap in.
My biggest surprise so far was humble ol' Skyrim VR. I had previously played through it and loved it when it came out, but in VR it feels like a whole different game. Now I have no problem moseying across the continent with a bow and arrow to my next quest, stopping at every cave or monument I see, just to check it out. (bows are super op in VR, like shooting a machine gun if you try hard enough) I find myself taking pride in my work after I make a sick potion, or adopt a kid. Or my stomach dropping when I fall off a ledge. Getting jump scared by a skeever in a dark hallway. It feels more engaging and meaningful.
When before I was like "why doesn't my horse go faster", or searching "is there any way to fast travel to places I haven't been yet." It was like I was fighting against the game to get it done as quick as possible.
I had never dropped the $500+- to hop into VR for various reasons. Whether it was that the previous 10 headsets that came out had lots of problems plus needed a bunch of trackers, and a whole room, or I didn't know if I was going to get burned out/motion sick wearing a headset for an hour+. It just never happened. In total, before this month, I spent like 10 minutes in a dave and buster VR. Which was cool, but was grainy and low resolution.
I've been trying to convince my friends to get one, because it seriously feels like I just started gaming again. Idk. I'm at work right now, and I felt compelled to go on about the Quest 3. It's my favorite piece of gaming hardware in a long time, and I wish it, and VR in general, much success.
I guess this is how people that had one for the past year have felt. It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't have one just how awesome it is. Like now I want every game to be VR. Gimme a mass effect reboot, all 3 in VR. I'll pay whatever you want Bioware.
