Finally bought Elden Ring...and I'm not sure it's for me.

4.2k Upvotes

I'm at 118 minutes, so deciding if I want to refund.

I enjoy RPGs and open worlds, especially ones that have lots of things to find and explore, and where you become more powerful as you do so.

Maybe I'm just not good at souls-like games, but the timing of everything seems to be arbitrary. Sometimes I feel like I see an enemy make a move and it's slow, and other times they triple hit me with no warning.

I am at what is essentially the start of the game by this big gate. There is a big monster guy through the gate I was able to get to about 1/2 health before I died. The other direction is a little encampment of soldiers where I snuck around and backstabbed a number of them, but then the captain guy kicked my ass. I have tried about 10 times to kill the captain and no matter how I try to roll, I end up flat footed and he comes in with a triple strike.

I've increased Vigor 2 times so far, and I figure I can kind of "farm" this little area and increase a bit more, but I doubt it'll be enough to really help much, and it'll just make my future upgrades for damage that much more expensive.

There are a zillion guides online, but most of them are about where to go and what to do and they assume you're not getting killed by the first enemies you meet.

I played some Dark Souls and got to 4 kings before the edition I had basically shut down, and I've played a lot of Monster Hunter which has "slow weapons" but I am wondering if maybe this just isn't going to click. I kept hearing that "even if you don't like soulslike games this is still accessible" and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Edit; thanks for the massive amount of feedback and tips :) I'm going to keep it and explore in the other direction and stop using "RPG logic" where I feel like I have to fight every enemy I see cause they might have something good or whatever. It was $35 which isn't nothing, but that's the same as a bottle of whiskey which is no good for my health anyway so I'll skip drinking for a while and make myself lightheaded with the game instead :)

Winning hyper-difficult minesweeper is a whole journey

These are what is considered 100,000+ difficulty. Difficulty is linear and measures the expected amount of time, including all losses, to win a board. Expert is considered 50 difficulty, so the time to beat 100k should be around the time to win 2k expert games. These were my three most soul-crushing losses along the way and the eventual win. Board dimensions are 100×100/2184 and 74×54/1971, played on minesweeper.online

As a fan of Sucker Punch games… figured it was time to give their very first game a shot.

I’ve heard lots of good about this game before I even knew it was developed by Sucker Punch, mostly about how it was one of the earliest games to implement physics into its gameplay in such a crucial way.

Finally found a copy of it after searching for months (yeah they’re on eBay, but they’re pricey), and I’m excited to give it a go.

NLR Boeing flight sim helicopter setup

Post image
Upvotes

So I bought myself a next level racing Boeing flight sim, it’s great, what’s not great is it’s not very helicopter friendly. So I changed some bits and pieces here and there and now it’s fully helicopter/plane setup, pretty happy with the result.

Now I can finally sim flight in peace, just waiting for the pimax crystal light now, and I will have everything.

Cheers! 🤙🏻

Looking for games with lots of progression systems

I just finished playing ASTLIBRA and it has a ton of different progression systems.

  1. You're character can level up
  2. Gear can get mastered
  3. Gems can be used to unlock skills
  4. Extra trinket slots can be unlocked to wield more gear
  5. Different orb types based on enemies killed can be used to upgrade stats
  6. A balancing scale can be used on items to gain passive stats
  7. An RNG drop system similar to looters with different tiers of loot (like common, uncommon, rare, and legendary chests).

Other games I can think of with lots of progression systems.

  1. Borderlands series
  2. Fromsoftware games

Looking for other games with a lot of different ways to progress your character and become powerful. The more ways to get strong the better. Single player games where you can grind a ton of different things to get better. Not looking for the MMOs.

Best Steam games for a "LAN" party?

Can anyone recommend me games which are good/perfect for the context of a LAN party (doesn't has to be "LAN" - if it's online only it's absolutely fine).

It doesn't matter if it's a game with a competitve nature or just for fun.

2 important things: - it should be kinda cheap - the more players the better

Thanks in advance!

Ive been playing a lot of Darktide lately and..

TL:DR, the Tide trilogy is a better successor to L4D than Back 4 Blood is.

It kinda makes me think of how Turtle Rock really doesnt know what theyre doing

L4D was carried by Valve, and thats especially obvious when you see how B4B was intended to be a spiritual successor to L4D but fell flat in almost every department.

Then you have the Tide trilogy by Fatshark,

They nailed the gameplay that L4D's genre of horde shooter provides.

In b4b, special enemies can have several different variants with their own little quirks.

I think Tall Boys have 4 variants?

Meanwhile Darktide has at most, 2 variants of a special enemy, but even then theyre very distinct from each other. Both visually and mechanically.

Scab Gunners are wearing armor and use laser weaponry, whereas Dreg Gunners do not wear armor and use ballistic weaponry.

Scab Flamers are distinct from Pox Flamers

The 4 Boss types, Plague Ogryn, Beast of Nurgle, Chaos Spawn, and the Daemonhost, feel unique from each other. The DH being most akin to the L4D witch but much tankier and can (and if unprepared or dont have a certain build WILL) kill a party member. (Recently nerfed, used to kill party members scaling with difficulty, now caps at 1 party member even if on Difficulty 5)

You know when an elite enemy spawns in, due to the simple fact of..

They never shut the fuck up.

They CONSTANTLY talk.

Snipers dont talk, but they have a big obvious laser sight and when they're about to shoot, make a big obvious audio cue.

Part of what makes a Horde Shooter is the sound design, and if youre in the middle of a horde, shooting or cleaving you way through. It would feel bullshit if suddenly you were pinned by a disabler enemy that you didnt know was there. But even then, theres only 2, 3 at most, enemies that actually pin you. Those being Trappers and Pox Hounds (and the weaker pox hound variant when part of a mission modifier)

Every other special just keeps you pinned in other ways, for example:

Area denial via flame and pox bombers

Area denial via Scab and Pox Flamers

Pinning your movement down by filling the air with an unholy, heretical amount of bullets and lasfire.

Snipers.

All in all, the enemy and sound design alone elevate Darktide above B4B.

Then theres the actual mechanics of gameplay

Darktide and B4B both have wound systems

But Darktide handles it MUCH better, allowing multiple opportunities to heal, and, if you have certain build, you will regenerate wounds. You dont have to worry about weapon rarity mid-match, instead picking your loadout before the game starts and loading in with a Gun and Melee of your choice.

And with the recent Unlocked and Loaded update, its even easier to get the perfect weapons.

Ammo is usually plentiful, and if you are playing a Psyker (the magic class) more often than not youre not using ammo at all, instead using a staff which uses your Peril, a currency that, if overloaded, causes you to down. Its a form of overheating.

Ive rambled on enough, but thank you for taking time to read my rambling about a game i enjoy
