This race is so fucking chaotic

1.0k

u/-Akos- BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

Yeah, good. Would have been a snoozefest otherwise. Maybe a tip for next year here: throw something breakable on the track to give it some oomph. Yesterday’s sprint was boooooooring.

428

u/CHobbes_ BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

Even with this chaos, this race basically sucks

326

u/GigaCringeMods BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

The track is simply bad for F1. Who would've guessed that a track that was not made for F1 would end up being underwhelming for the purpose it was not build for?

You can tell the track is shit even by just playing the F1 games. It's just same corners, over and over again, which are either flat or nearly flat. You will literally forget what part of the track you're on because it all looks the same. Seriously, without racing line assist on you will straight up not remember if the next corner is a flat one or a slight lift one, they are so similar.

38

u/EmveePhotography Rawcheek 🤭🧴 24d ago

I actually have that with every track designed by TIlke, to be honest. They're all boring.

70

u/LovieBeard BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

They're hit and miss. Malaysia, Bahrain, Turkey, and COTA are all fun tracks

68

u/HandsumNap BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

Tilke has produced many bangers. I don't think he's a bad designer at all, and I think the problem is with F1, not him. Do you think it would be possible for anybody to design a good track at Sochi? or Yas Marina? The bad idea was putting tracks there to begin with, and I don't think any amount of great design could have made them much less shit than they are.

I've also met him a few times, and he's a really nice guy. Willing to talk to random fans for an unreasonably long time about F1.

13

u/EmveePhotography Rawcheek 🤭🧴 24d ago

No one said anything bad about the man himself. :) Good to see that he's shown to be a very amiable and engaged person to you! :)

8

u/LovieBeard BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

Yas Marina is actually pretty good nowadays after the 2021 changes

22

u/HandsumNap BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

It's an improvement, but I don't think Yas Marina produces especially exciting races for any reason other than being the last race of the year. My point is I think Tilke's track record is actually pretty good, and the stinkers he's put out weren't exactly locations that were begging for an exciting race track to be built on top of them.

u/sherlock2223 Left at the Petrol Pump 24d ago

Still mid af

1

u/Last-Performance-435 Question. 23d ago

Sochi is legitimately a fuckin banger to drive in the games though imo. Mostly because the simulation of it ignores all of the aspects that make it bad irl.

France was also a fun track in the games.

The worst tracks in the F1 games imo are all of the 'classic' tracks which all feel really strange and 'yumpy' in places.

It's a weird contrast that I like playing all the tracks I hate watching and vice versa.

14

u/EmveePhotography Rawcheek 🤭🧴 24d ago

The main problem I have with Tilke circuits, and the main reason why I think it's 'boring', is that all of his designs are intrinsically the same. They have the same kind of corners, follow the same patterns and offer the same (lack of) challenges. Tilke basically has one standard circuit which he ports to various locations.

Don't get me wrong. I'm convinced that the man is a very capable circuit builder, otherwise he wouldn't be involved in so many of them, and he's really good at building tracks which follow modern safety standards. It's just that I'd like to see a tiny little bit of variation and creativity every now and then. You know, something like a new Eau Rouge (at Spa), cambered corners (like Zandvoort), possibilities of alternative racelines (like Max at Sao Paulo), a new Suzuka. Heck, even something with a new high speed challenge (like Monza), or something with significant height differences like a few circuits have (including the aforementioned Spa and Sao Paulo, or Spielberg). Or just something completely crazy and new which we've never seen before, but is completely possible with 2024 insights and technology.

Even refurbished circuits like Hockenheim lost quite a bit of their spark after he was done, in my opinion. I'm pretty sure there were more and different possibilities there.

u/Spare_Duck3119 Nico Hüüüüüüüülkenberg 24d ago

Silverstone is another track that I never know which allegedly world famous corner we are approaching.

2

u/Right-Ladd I'm in a parasocial relationship with Hannah 🤤🤤 24d ago

Yea I never knew either until I went to the GP in 2022 and we got the map and basically went seat shopping for the next time we plan on going to Silverstone. Also got to walk around the track which is the most surreal shit ever. Standing on Copse corner and just imaging Hamilton and Verstappen coming down that straight at 200mph right alongside each other with 18 cars right behind them, you can’t explain that shit, seeing it in real life is so fkn weird!!

0

u/GigaCringeMods BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

I think that's just a big you-problem. Every corner in Silverstone is unique and visually distinct from others.

Sounds like a skill issue

2

u/GigaCringeMods BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

Maybe. But that only happens in Qatar. And no wonder, since other tracks don't have the same corners over and over.

2

u/simpinsanity BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

All street circuits, especially Monaco, are not built for the purpose of F1 racing. Nevertheless we admire drivers who win those races. As long as drivers all share the same track and challenges those track present, ot doesn’t matter whether the tracks are good or bad.

2

u/diqster BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

I love that everyone wails about Las Vegas before the race each year, then post race concludes that it's actually a pretty decent track.

Each year Qatar is a horrible race and everyone forgets the following year.

1

u/Telsion Left at the Petrol Pump 24d ago

Turn 1 and the 12-13-14 sequence is fun. The rest simply isn't. But they're just not going to make a new track somewhere else in that desert, are they?

15

u/notoriousdevil10 “It’s called a motor race. We went car racing” 24d ago

The FIA ruined a lot of races this year by shortening the drs straight. Basically reduced overtaking in almost all tracks that depend on one spot for overtaking. Bahrain, Qatar, Spa are some that immediately pop up. Hope they put the drs ranges back to normal next year.

14

u/Qyx7 I love alonslow and I have untreatable levels of stupid 24d ago edited 24d ago

No.

Spa has had no good races since 2011 with that long DRS; no battles into the corner just go past in the straight and everyone gets ordered up based on race pace

Last year Lusail was too easy to overtake but this year they've clearly overdone it

4

u/notoriousdevil10 “It’s called a motor race. We went car racing” 24d ago

They don't take into account the fact that teams have found ways to mount downforce on the bodywork of the cars increasing the dirty air generated, had they done these changes for the 2022 cars, it would've been okay but with current cars based on 2023 outcomes, it's fucking stupid, but then again it's the FIA, if they didn't do stupid shit, that would be the headline.

In a rare moment where I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Croft (ugh), I do think the way the safety car was handled for the wing mirror debris was bullshit. Race Control should’ve thrown a VSC or safety car well before Bottas smashed the mirror, and several drivers got pointlessly screwed over because of it. Total clown show from the FIA today.

They are quite anti penalty anyway. Maybe you are like this when you used to be a driver. Giving a lot of people quite a lot of slack, when they really driving dangerous.

They also called the 10 seconds for overtaking off track harsh this season when FIA very clearly communicated that this will be the new norm.

At least they generally acknowledge that a penalty is valid but almost always argue it is too harsh this season. Today it sounded like they would have given a 5 second penalty to Lando for not slowing down under yellow.

Not to mention Hamilton got a puncture because of the mirror on the main straight. On top of his penalty

The Norris penalty was the correct one. That is the penalty for disregarding double yellow and has always been

Rui Marquez, MBS, and all the stewards today - please never go near an F1 race. Sincerely, follow the GPS like Michael Scott, except please do it into an ocean.

Debris on the fastest spot on the circuit

Doesn’t do anything about it for 4 laps

Finally have to do something when TWO cars get punctures

Lewis has just given up on life

Penalize the shit out of anyone that speaks English as a first language

What did i just watch

u/stahlgrauzhp CUMOA 24d ago

I liked the part where they watched the mirror jettison replay and still couldn’t figure out which car had lost a mirror.

The British bias was a new thing. The Ferrari bias is as old as F1.

You wait till next week. Zak will be donating his life to the FIA most likely for McLaren to win.

i swear formula 1 is the WWE of autosports, shits so uninteresting that you have to make up ways for it to be fun with driver drama and theatrics. It's not about the actual races anymore since it was sold.

3

u/Futuco BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

the entire weekend was like this, the f2, w series, even the Porsche race was kinda chaotic
2 hours to fix a single guard rail and barrier wtf
3 days of pure stupid decisions

2

u/Rastalars Guenther Gang 24d ago

I bet that all the penalties that was given during this race was Bensulayem's idea since he got complains about how he runs F1💀

2

u/Uuucha BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

You know... I accidentally spoiled myself with this post when I opened reddit on my phone by habit during my morning and quickly closed it since I prefer to not spoil myself until I see the race when I'm free.

So as a "what the fuck" race I didn't know what to expect when watching it later and boy... I did not expect any of that.

Now if they’d start penalizing drivers for not leaving a cars width at CORNER EXIT, we might actually get some good racing.

The double time yellow flag is weird and 4 laps too late, like make your fucking mind up please. It should've been a VSC with pit drive-through for everyone (I'm not sure if this is doable without a safety car).

I still can't believe they (rightfully) penalized Norris because what he did was unsafe, but the formationlap with marshals on track was a 5K fine...

... and also when the fucking FIA leaves a wing mirror on the track, I guess?

2

u/Academic_Article1875 BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

Yeah, that was unholy from them.  I'm so sorry for Sainz.

You cant Tell that there wasnt a 10 second time window to get the mirror. Maybe with a long thing to get it quicker. Or bring out the virtual saftey car for 30 seconds.

That was the biggest FIA-Bullshit Bingo race we had in a while...

If FIA is a person, and is right in front of me now, I'll punch his face till it deforms with teeth sticking in it's eyes and pooled up in blood.
