This race is so fucking chaotic

Yeah, good. Would have been a snoozefest otherwise. Maybe a tip for next year here: throw something breakable on the track to give it some oomph. Yesterday’s sprint was boooooooring.

Even with this chaos, this race basically sucks

The track is simply bad for F1. Who would've guessed that a track that was not made for F1 would end up being underwhelming for the purpose it was not build for?

You can tell the track is shit even by just playing the F1 games. It's just same corners, over and over again, which are either flat or nearly flat. You will literally forget what part of the track you're on because it all looks the same. Seriously, without racing line assist on you will straight up not remember if the next corner is a flat one or a slight lift one, they are so similar.

I actually have that with every track designed by TIlke, to be honest. They're all boring.

u/LovieBeard BWOAHHHHHHH 25d ago

They're hit and miss. Malaysia, Bahrain, Turkey, and COTA are all fun tracks

Tilke has produced many bangers. I don't think he's a bad designer at all, and I think the problem is with F1, not him. Do you think it would be possible for anybody to design a good track at Sochi? or Yas Marina? The bad idea was putting tracks there to begin with, and I don't think any amount of great design could have made them much less shit than they are.

I've also met him a few times, and he's a really nice guy. Willing to talk to random fans for an unreasonably long time about F1.

No one said anything bad about the man himself. :) Good to see that he's shown to be a very amiable and engaged person to you! :)

Yas Marina is actually pretty good nowadays after the 2021 changes

u/HandsumNap BWOAHHHHHHH 25d ago

It's an improvement, but I don't think Yas Marina produces especially exciting races for any reason other than being the last race of the year. My point is I think Tilke's track record is actually pretty good, and the stinkers he's put out weren't exactly locations that were begging for an exciting race track to be built on top of them.

Sochi is legitimately a fuckin banger to drive in the games though imo. Mostly because the simulation of it ignores all of the aspects that make it bad irl.

France was also a fun track in the games.

The worst tracks in the F1 games imo are all of the 'classic' tracks which all feel really strange and 'yumpy' in places.

It's a weird contrast that I like playing all the tracks I hate watching and vice versa.

The main problem I have with Tilke circuits, and the main reason why I think it's 'boring', is that all of his designs are intrinsically the same. They have the same kind of corners, follow the same patterns and offer the same (lack of) challenges. Tilke basically has one standard circuit which he ports to various locations.

Don't get me wrong. I'm convinced that the man is a very capable circuit builder, otherwise he wouldn't be involved in so many of them, and he's really good at building tracks which follow modern safety standards. It's just that I'd like to see a tiny little bit of variation and creativity every now and then. You know, something like a new Eau Rouge (at Spa), cambered corners (like Zandvoort), possibilities of alternative racelines (like Max at Sao Paulo), a new Suzuka. Heck, even something with a new high speed challenge (like Monza), or something with significant height differences like a few circuits have (including the aforementioned Spa and Sao Paulo, or Spielberg). Or just something completely crazy and new which we've never seen before, but is completely possible with 2024 insights and technology.

Even refurbished circuits like Hockenheim lost quite a bit of their spark after he was done, in my opinion. I'm pretty sure there were more and different possibilities there.

It's harder when you're forces to do street circuits

Hockenheim was absolutely destroyed.

Silverstone is another track that I never know which allegedly world famous corner we are approaching.

2

u/Right-Ladd I'm in a parasocial relationship with Hannah 🤤🤤 25d ago

Yea I never knew either until I went to the GP in 2022 and we got the map and basically went seat shopping for the next time we plan on going to Silverstone. Also got to walk around the track which is the most surreal shit ever. Standing on Copse corner and just imaging Hamilton and Verstappen coming down that straight at 200mph right alongside each other with 18 cars right behind them, you can’t explain that shit, seeing it in real life is so fkn weird!!

u/GigaCringeMods BWOAHHHHHHH 25d ago

I think that's just a big you-problem. Every corner in Silverstone is unique and visually distinct from others.

u/Armando22nl BWOAHHHHHHH 23d ago

To me the one before old start and new are quite alike

COTA is not boring.

u/AgnesBand Question. 25d ago

Sounds like a skill issue

2

u/GigaCringeMods BWOAHHHHHHH 25d ago

Maybe. But that only happens in Qatar. And no wonder, since other tracks don't have the same corners over and over.

2

u/simpinsanity BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

All street circuits, especially Monaco, are not built for the purpose of F1 racing. Nevertheless we admire drivers who win those races. As long as drivers all share the same track and challenges those track present, ot doesn’t matter whether the tracks are good or bad.

u/diqster BWOAHHHHHHH 24d ago

I love that everyone wails about Las Vegas before the race each year, then post race concludes that it's actually a pretty decent track.

Each year Qatar is a horrible race and everyone forgets the following year.

Turn 1 and the 12-13-14 sequence is fun. The rest simply isn't. But they're just not going to make a new track somewhere else in that desert, are they?

48

u/HeatproofArmin BWOAHHHHHHH 25d ago

Yeah this chaos wasn’t the good chaos we wanted to see

34

u/improbablydrunknlw BWOAHHHHHHH 25d ago

At least with all the restarts we got to see one to two minutes of racing.

u/Alarming_Dingo_139 WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER🇺🇲🇺🇲🦅🦅RAHH 25d ago

And we got 8 different teams scoring points today, including a Sauber

u/notoriousdevil10 “It’s called a motor race. We went car racing” 25d ago

The FIA ruined a lot of races this year by shortening the drs straight. Basically reduced overtaking in almost all tracks that depend on one spot for overtaking. Bahrain, Qatar, Spa are some that immediately pop up. Hope they put the drs ranges back to normal next year.

16

u/Qyx7 I love alonslow and I have untreatable levels of stupid 25d ago edited 25d ago

No.

Spa has had no good races since 2011 with that long DRS; no battles into the corner just go past in the straight and everyone gets ordered up based on race pace

Last year Lusail was too easy to overtake but this year they've clearly overdone it

5

u/notoriousdevil10 “It’s called a motor race. We went car racing” 25d ago

They don't take into account the fact that teams have found ways to mount downforce on the bodywork of the cars increasing the dirty air generated, had they done these changes for the 2022 cars, it would've been okay but with current cars based on 2023 outcomes, it's fucking stupid, but then again it's the FIA, if they didn't do stupid shit, that would be the headline.

Yeah. We need more street circuits instead.
