Guide [Guide] What used car should I get for what budget?

[04/07/2024 UPDATE]

The prices on the 2022 dashboard are still fairly accurate. You may squeeze a couple model years newer but for most models, it's not gonna make much difference. Let me know if you think the prices are off. They are based on the U.S. market (specifically So-cal area).

The only key difference I want to make on the upcoming change is removing all Kia/Hyundai models due to a theft epidemic on these cars. Please do not consider them (look up Kia boyz on Google).

I've finally made the dashboard that will show the most optimal used cars for budgets under $5k, $10k, and $15k.

The dashboard is hosted in Tableau Public so everybody can freely look at it without creating an account. Just use the slide down menu on the right to select a body style and the radio buttons at the bottom to adjust the budget. To see which brands you want to pay closer attention to, hover your mouse over the logos. The numbers on the right side column represent Priority where 1 represent the more optimal choice than 2 and so forth.

Link to the dashboard (Last updated 04/07/2024):

https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/han.solo8717/viz/UsedCardashboard/Main

Since I have been seeing many of these questions pop up here (and other Subreddits), I'm willing to sacrifice some time I have left before I need to sleep to hopefully give you answers and make your search a little bit easier.

These prices are based on the following condition: You're buying from an individual OR a licensed (not franchised) dealer, the car has a clean title, mileage per year varies from 12.5-15k (Unless it's an older car), is in GOOD condition (by KBB standards), no modifications, base model or similar, and is able to run and drive with LITTLE* to no problems (Windows may not work, seats may be ripped, glovebox is loose, etc.)

These cars & prices reflect the U.S. Market.

Second and beyond choices are honorable mentions in case if you are opting for another car.

Choice is based on: Reliability, value, safety, ride-quality and cost of ownership.

ADVICE Question about branded title and if its worth buying FORD

Upvotes

Ok, so I have been hunting for a used car or suv for the past month. I ran across recently a Ford Explorer Police interceptor. It had lowerish miles which raised my eyebrows and the cost was significantly under others in the area with comparable milage. When I was looking over the carfax on it I noticed that the engine that was in it had multiple problems. However at the milage point the Ford Dealership where it was at was repurchased from the police, and a new engine was installed as well as the drive shaft which only has 1000 miles. The vehicle is about 7 years old but effectively was only on the road 4 years before they pulled it off due to the engine issues and the rebuild sat there for 2 years until ford finally kicked it lose to an auction. Would a car like this worth pursuing. My credit union won't give me a loan on a lemon rebuild car even from the manufacturer so the loan rate would be higher. Does anything think this would be worth pursuing. It is a 2017 model Ford Explorer Police Inteceptor. And I only found out about the engine swap when talking to the dealer about my concerns about the water pump on it and the idle hours. But since it sa new engine Idle hours are not entering into the equation here. Anyone think this is worth pursuing? I got a full offer from the dealer out the door for 13.1k if I decide to get a loan which would be an a higher interest rate. My credit score however is like 805 so I would ge the best rate at the worst type of car to buy.

ADVICE Should I buy used 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer?

The car is being sold for $2,500 and here is the description provided by the seller:

2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer · Suv · Driven 200,000 miles

Brand new tires New battery New alternator Recent spark plug swap Interior is in good condition for its age Custom radio with Bluetooth No leaks, oil or otherwise Heat and AC working

Front end suspension will need some love. Strut and/or shock replacement is my guess. And the idle control valve needs to be cleaned or replaced. Other than that this vehicle is running like a champ! Does great in the snow with variable four wheel drive.

This is on Facebook marketplace. The seller seems nice and willing to let me test drive and take to an autoshop before buying. What do you guys think? This will possibly be my first ever car purchase. A beater to get to and from work?

ADVICE First time buying a car in 10 yrs. Advice?

Looking at a used car that is just under $22k. It has dropped in price by about $1,300 within the past week or two, presumably because the dealership wants to move it before the year is out. The car looks solid, but I am trying to get the best bang for my buck, just like anyone these days, and if they're looking to move inventory, I'm trying to see how far I can stretch it. I am planning on going the last day of the year (just how my schedule works out), and I am willing to put down around 10% as a down payment, and I know that I want the GAP insurance and not anything else. I am also planning to have my mechanic do a multi-point inspection to make sure that it is solid and to possibly find points to haggle on, for example, maintenence that might need to be done in the near future. This is the best car and deal that I have seen in my area (pending the result of the inspection), and despite the fact that I am breaking rule #1 and have my heart set on this car, I will 100% walk away if I'm not feeling it. That said, I haven't bought a car in over a decade. What are some ways to ensure that I get the best bang for my buck? Thanks!

Buying Buying a used car - how much is mileage worth?

I’m looking at a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. I can get one with 30k miles for $32,000. I can get the same car with 110k miles for $19,000. I just wanted some other’s opinions - to me it’s worth buying the 110k miles car to save $13,000. Would like any counterpoints or thoughts. I’ll put maybe 5,000 miles a year on it. Also - I believe going with one under $25k will also make me eligible for the used clean vehicle tax credit- any one have info on that?

Thanks!

ADVICE 2024 used BMW - importance of CPO?

I am looking at buying a 2024 BMW 530i and found one with <5k miles, good carfax, and the options that I want at a local dealership. I have two questions as I consider closing the deal:

  1. The dealership is saying their first out the door price is the best they can do, no negotiating. Is that generally true? I am saving roughly $5k OTD vs a similar spec negotiated down OTD 2025 new vehicle.

  2. This car is not Certified Pre-Owned, but it’s one owner, no accidents, <5k miles. The dealership completed a 125 point inspection and sent it to me, and it all looks good. My question is, should I hire an independent 3rd party to do an inspection before purchasing? They are giving me the original factory warranty

Thank you!

ADVICE Need some advice on buying 2nd hand cars

Hello, I am looking to buy 2nd hand car, don’t really have any preference for make or model. I will just be using for office and running errands, likely 30 miles per day. My budget is around 18k and I need atleast below specifications 1) Car play 2) 5 seater 3) Heated car seats/steering wheel

I don’t have much guidance from anyone hence asking my question here. What all things are to be considered absolute red flags not limited to accident history? Any good suggestions? Does this below car look good?

Also which insurance will you suggest for anyone getting car for first time in Washington state?

Sports Cars Under $8000.

Are there any good sports cars you can buy for under $8000. I want a manual transmission. Either a coupe or convertible. Something not too pricy to maintain. It would be a second car for me. I need to store outside during New England winters since I don’t have a garage. Will be a second car for me. I have a reliable daily driver SUV. I’ll drive on my days off and like twisty roads. I hope this is enough info for you to help me out. Thank you.

Buying 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan V8. 60601

Thinking about getting the 2012 genesis. No accidents, maintenance every 10k miles, 1 owner, 115k miles on odometer. It's under 8000 dollars from a used car dealer.

Is this a good deal? What should I expect maintenances wise? Is this an easy car for a amateur like me to work on? Anything I should look for specifically when I check out the car? If this is a bad choice any alternative suggestions?

What would you buy for 20k?

I’m planning to purchase my next car in the coming months or within the next year, and I’m trying to decide which one would be the best fit. I’m particularly fond of models like the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Kia Optima, BMW 325i, BMW 528i, and Hyundai Sonata. My budget is around $20,000-$25,000, so I’m likely looking at cars from the 2015–2020 range.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these options, especially in terms of costs, maintenance, reliability, and overall value for money.

Selling Selling Used 2015 Q50 3.7 RWD

This is my first time selling a car and wanted some feedback. I’ve had my Q50 for about 3 years now. It has 110k miles , is in good condition - minor paint scratches/dents , front window isn’t seated properly but works fine, and leather is a little scratched up (no tears). Besides those minor issues I’ve never modified anything besides cosmetic items such as Aodhan DS08 rims, custom chrome deleted headlights , black grille and front emblem, Infiniti flood lights and Infiniti floor covers. I also have the original rims it came with , tires included. Car has never been tuned and has no mechanical issues. I know young kids like this car and it’s hard to find a good condition 3.7 Q. I was thinking of listing for around 12-13k privately. Best offer from Carmax/Dealership I’ve received is 8.5k. Am I asking for too much? Is the extra 3-4k worth the hassle of selling privately ?

ADVICE 2000 Toyota Tundra vs. 2011 Subaru Forester

Both cars cost about the same.

The Tundra has 215k miles on it. Extended cab. Has a shell. Appears to be in good condition.

The Forester has 115k miles on it. Appears to be in good condition.

Can anyone please help provide some insights on how to think about this? I have zero mechanical skills. The truck is probably my preference, but I am a little worried that it may require a lot more repair work because of its age and mileage?

Thank you!

Buying First time getting a car - advice on a 2019 Nissan Rouge?

Hi there! I'm looking to get a used car and I'm wholly unfamiliar with the process, a little worried about getting scammed.

Right now I'm looking at a 2019 Nissan Rouge with 96k miles and going for $12k. It's had 3 owners and the car fax shows regular inspections and services. I'm test driving it next week so I'm going to do a thorough inspection (to the best of my ability that is). If I want to get it I'm thinking of offering $10k.

What are your thoughts based on the numbers? What are some things to look out for in the test drive that hasn't been mentioned in the community highlights?

Is $10k a reasonable offer and what type of fees can I expect in NJ? If I'm paying up front in cash, is there a way I should go about negotiating?

Thank you!

Buying Auction house or private sale for <$3000 budget?

Hey all,

Looking for a reliable, simple car for under $3000 (yes, very cheap, I know). I’ve found a 2004 Honda Cr-V from an auction house with 174k miles in good condition for around $2700 that I was looking at. However, I found this before digging deep into private sales on FB Marketplace and Craigslist. My question is, do I take the slightly riskier route and do a private sale, or do I just settle for the $2700 CR-V from a more reputable company?

Side note: if anyone has advice for picking a car this cheap, I’d love to hear it. Thanks!
