ADVICE Used SUV to get to 200,000k

Currently driving a 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid with 200,000+ miles on it and am preparing for the worst. I absolutely love this car but understand it won’t last forever.

Can anyone please recommend another SUV that gets semi good mileage for long distance commutes? I’m hoping for another bout of luck when it comes to a car lasting a while. Hoping to stay closer to $20k. Thank you in advance.

Buying Buying a used car - how much is mileage worth?

I’m looking at a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. I can get one with 30k miles for $32,000. I can get the same car with 110k miles for $19,000. I just wanted some other’s opinions - to me it’s worth buying the 110k miles car to save $13,000. Would like any counterpoints or thoughts. I’ll put maybe 5,000 miles a year on it. Also - I believe going with one under $25k will also make me eligible for the used clean vehicle tax credit- any one have info on that?

Thanks!

NJ vs NY buying

Is it better to buy a used car from NY or NJ dealership? Specifically, where are the added costs (documentation, prep fees, etc. Everything beyond taxes & registration) less?

Buying Help choosing a car.

Looking at a couple of used cars under 8000USD.

My information is all from carfax.

Car 1: 2019 VW Passat Wolfsburg Edition. 180k miles. oil+filter change every 5k-10k miles. Single owner, no accidents. 7000USD

Car 2: 2013 VW Passat Wolfsburg Edition. 125k miles. oil+filter change every 10k miles. Single owner, no accidents. Open Recall. 8000USD

Car 3: 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan 4.6 Base. 110k miles. Irregular reporting on oil+filter changes. Single Owner, no accidents, paint chipping on rear bumper and driver side fender. 7000USD

Car 4: 2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan 3.8. 105k miles. Irregular reporting on oil+filter changes. Single Owner, no accidents. 6000USD

Right now I am currently leaning towards either car 1 or 3.

My reasons for car 1 is that it has the best maintenance record, is the newest of the bunch with many features, and I have experience with VW. Also with the amount of miles in such a short time frame, I assume it is mostly highway miles.

My reasons for car 3 is that I have read that the 4.6 engine is very solid/reliable, as well as the transmission being strong.

Thoughts on newer cars with high miles vs the other way around? Are there factors I'm not considering? Which do you think is the best to go for? I have access to VW diagnostic tools.

Buying Hertz Rent2Buy question

Hi, I had a question for those that have used the Hertz Rent2Buy program for buying a used car. I'm currently trying to buy a used car from them at a Hertz location in the Northeast. I got the car inspected by a mechanic and told the sales guy I wanted to buy. He said he would order the title, but that it might take a few weeks w/ the holidays, etc. It doesn't seem like it should take that long to get and it puts the buyer in a bad position with holding a rental for that amount of time (rental charges get waived if you buy the car but I'm worried I'll be on the hook if there's some unforeseen issue and I end up not buying).

Wanted to see if anyone else ran into this issue w/ the Hertz buying process and any other general information would be helpful. Trying to not get screwed over / scammed by holding the car too long, the sale not going through, and being on the hook for like a month's worth of rental charges. The car seems to be listed for a good price so that's the draw, but this particular Hertz location has gotten bad reviews for customer service issues, etc.

Thanks in advance for any helpful info and Happy Holidays.

Buying Buying in Dec or wait until 2025?

There are only a few days left until 2025. Will a car on a lot drop in value if I just wait until the next calendar year?

For example, if I see a 2021 car, if I just wait until January 1st will the car cost less because it's now 4 years old based on the year?

ADVICE Need Help Buying a Used Car (Budget: $10K) + Pre-Purchase Inspection Recommendations in Philly

I’m looking to buy a reliable used car with a budget of $10,000. My preference is for a Honda or Toyota due to their reliability and resale value, but I’m open to other suggestions if they’re known for being dependable.

I’m also searching for recommendations for a trustworthy pre-purchase inspection (PPI) mechanic or location in Philadelphia. If you know of a shop or mechanic who’s great at checking out used cars before purchase, please let me know!

Lastly, if anyone has tips on what to look for when buying a used car or common issues with models from Honda or Toyota, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

ADVICE Advice to buy used car

I need advice for buying a used car. Buying my first car in Plano, Tx. I do not have any experience with car ownership, not personal or even a family car. So have not really driven before. My goal is to get to know car owning experience, what all comes with car, maintaining it and driving around. I am not confident enough to put in money for a new car yet. I am looking for a sedan or smaller hatchbacks, to do daily commute and running errands. I was checking out some toyota/nissan/honda models.

I will probably buy from a reputable car dealership. So looking for advice on what to look for? How much importance to put on miles on the car etc. My budget is around $12k. Also, please advise on insurance options too. I will probably buy within coming months

ADVICE Question about branded title and if its worth buying FORD

Ok, so I have been hunting for a used car or suv for the past month. I ran across recently a Ford Explorer Police interceptor. It had lowerish miles which raised my eyebrows and the cost was significantly under others in the area with comparable milage. When I was looking over the carfax on it I noticed that the engine that was in it had multiple problems. However at the milage point the Ford Dealership where it was at was repurchased from the police, and a new engine was installed as well as the drive shaft which only has 1000 miles. The vehicle is about 7 years old but effectively was only on the road 4 years before they pulled it off due to the engine issues and the rebuild sat there for 2 years until ford finally kicked it lose to an auction. Would a car like this worth pursuing. My credit union won't give me a loan on a lemon rebuild car even from the manufacturer so the loan rate would be higher. Does anything think this would be worth pursuing. It is a 2017 model Ford Explorer Police Inteceptor. And I only found out about the engine swap when talking to the dealer about my concerns about the water pump on it and the idle hours. But since it sa new engine Idle hours are not entering into the equation here. Anyone think this is worth pursuing? I got a full offer from the dealer out the door for 13.1k if I decide to get a loan which would be an a higher interest rate. My credit score however is like 805 so I would ge the best rate at the worst type of car to buy.

ADVICE Should I buy used 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer?

The car is being sold for $2,500 and here is the description provided by the seller:

2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer · Suv · Driven 200,000 miles

Brand new tires New battery New alternator Recent spark plug swap Interior is in good condition for its age Custom radio with Bluetooth No leaks, oil or otherwise Heat and AC working

Front end suspension will need some love. Strut and/or shock replacement is my guess. And the idle control valve needs to be cleaned or replaced. Other than that this vehicle is running like a champ! Does great in the snow with variable four wheel drive.

This is on Facebook marketplace. The seller seems nice and willing to let me test drive and take to an autoshop before buying. What do you guys think? This will possibly be my first ever car purchase. A beater to get to and from work?

ADVICE 2024 used BMW - importance of CPO?

I am looking at buying a 2024 BMW 530i and found one with <5k miles, good carfax, and the options that I want at a local dealership. I have two questions as I consider closing the deal:

  1. The dealership is saying their first out the door price is the best they can do, no negotiating. Is that generally true? I am saving roughly $5k OTD vs a similar spec negotiated down OTD 2025 new vehicle.

  2. This car is not Certified Pre-Owned, but it’s one owner, no accidents, <5k miles. The dealership completed a 125 point inspection and sent it to me, and it all looks good. My question is, should I hire an independent 3rd party to do an inspection before purchasing? They are giving me the original factory warranty

Thank you!

ADVICE Need some advice on buying 2nd hand cars

Hello, I am looking to buy 2nd hand car, don’t really have any preference for make or model. I will just be using for office and running errands, likely 30 miles per day. My budget is around 18k and I need atleast below specifications 1) Car play 2) 5 seater 3) Heated car seats/steering wheel

I don’t have much guidance from anyone hence asking my question here. What all things are to be considered absolute red flags not limited to accident history? Any good suggestions? Does this below car look good?

https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/3389650

Also which insurance will you suggest for anyone getting car for first time in Washington state?
