It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.1k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

I have 4C hair, and I decided to switch things up! After blow-drying, I styled it into a side twist—and I’m absolutely loving the look.

How do you style your 4C hair after blow-drying? I’m open to trying more ideas!

Need Advice I’m scared about how my hair is going to turn out. It looks like they are trying to get away with large boxes and small braids. Am I tripping?

They are saying the box is the same size as the reference picture I showed. I know it’s hard to clearly see the boxes in the reference but I think it’s pretty clear they are medium.

Hi my lovely naturals, I have been natural/in and out of protective styles (braids which I do myself, and mini twists with extensions) for a few years now and I clip my own ends. I am not scissor happy but def clip when I feel resistance/for the most part “know when to let go”. My hair has had some growth ever since I started doing this but now my back is evidently longer and the front is short. I believe this is from clipping away damage from sewins/heat damage located more on the top of my head from my past.

But I am now desperate for ways to grow my hair with the hopes of the front catching up so I can wear my hair out more comfortably. Am I clipping my ends too soon? I do it 6-8 weeks so mostly when I take out my protective styles and see tons of ends falling off in the shower. I am chronically iron deficient and need to be better about taking it.

What advice do you have in regards to good practices/additional vitamins to do so?

I wash every week when my hair is out since it is low porosity and gets dry during week. Then I wash every two weeks/month with protective styles.

I have finer hair and it is between 4b/4c, and the pictures go from most recent to oldest. The first two are braids/twist outs after trimming. The very last pic is the same but a year ago. Those in between are puffs from failed twist outs done after wash day. Most pics have product except those in the pink shirt.

Thank you advice is welcome! Pls be nice this is my first time posting here.

Anyone growing their hair. Ive been at the same length for years. Im more focused on length retention and moisture. Anyone else wanna be apart of this journey. I was thinking we can share hair update pics if you want.
Sorry for the bad pics. I hate taking pics of myself haha.

My routine is simple if you’re curious. I wash my hair once a week and deep condition. Then do a braidout. I dont wear box braids anymore im trying to learn to love my hair and wear it out. And i realized it thins my hair out significantly.

The top of my hair just doesn’t stay curly like the bottom. It seems impossible to keep the consistency. Does anyone else have this issue? I’d love to hear some tips. (Showing it after taking off my hair scarf, so please have mercy on the messiness)

Before receiving these gifts I’ve only used the amla oil, almond jai twist butter! So a lot of it was products I’ve never used prior. So far after receiving these I’ve used the repair and protect leave in, mane choice bond leave in, curl power cream, black seed oil, detangler brush and the rosemary mist. I really like everything so far. The curl power cream smells so freaking good. The rosemary mist hasn’t irritated my sebb derm within the couple days ive been using it which is amazing. The leave ins are so moisturizing. If you guys want a more in depth review lmk !!

I went to get my hair done today and had high hopes, but things didn’t turn out as expected. I had booked small knotless braids, the same style I had done by this braider back in October, and I was excited to get the same look—just with a different color. Initially, everything seemed fine, but as she started working on the front of my hair, I began to notice a few issues:

  1. She was braiding very close to my edges, which made me concerned.

  2. These weren’t knotless braids—at least not in the way I expected.

My mom, who generously gifted me this $300 hairstyle for Christmas, paid for the appointment. The braider works from her home, and there was no mirror in front of me, so I couldn’t really see how things were turning out. I texted my mom, who told me to wait and see how it looked once it was done.

I didn’t want to jump to conclusions as I couldn’t see what she was doing. Also we were not talking during this appointment, she was mainly on her phone calling others which does not bother me at all. I’m not much of a talker.

As the stylist finished up, I paid her and ordered an Uber without fully inspecting the braids. When I finally got a chance to look in the bathroom mirror, I noticed that the parts were much smaller than I had anticipated. When I mentioned it to the stylist, she reassured me, saying, 'They're not smaller than last time. They aren't that small. Next time, I'll make them bigger' (paraphrasing).

But when I got home and had a better look, I couldn’t hold back my tears. The braids don’t look anything like what I wanted. On top of that, the middle part isn’t even centered. Now I’m stuck not knowing what to do next.

The last photo is more of what I was expecting my braids to look like at the end.

I’ve been battling this troubling scalp issue for the last few years. I’ve met with my primary doctor and 3 different dermatologists that have told me that I have either Psoriasis or Seb Derm without giving me an exact diagnosis. I’ve been prescribed different products such as Clobetasol, Fluocinolone scalp oil, and even pills to reduce yeast. I’ve tried various shampoos and conditioners that have zinc pryithione (KeraCare Dry and Itchy Scalp), salicylic acid (T/Sal), and coal tar (MG217).

I’ve exhausted pretty much every avenue to find a good routine for my hair that will reduce these symptoms My current routine is washing and conditioning my hair with the KeraCare Dry and Itchy Scalp line on the days that I workout (3-4 times a week) - which sounds like a lot, but my scalp starts drying up and pimples start forming if I don’t wash regularly.

I’ve been having to wash my hair every other day, otherwise my scales and dryness develops like it does with the photos attached. There are times when I wake up and there’s blood all over my pillowcase due to the dryness and pimples throughout my scalp. What products have helped with reducing these flare ups? What about dietary/lifestyle changes?

Need Advice How Are Y’all Managing to Wash Your Natural Hair Every Day?

Hey everyone, I’ve been watching Kinky hair chemistry, and the results are super convincing—it’s all backed by science too! But I’m sitting here wondering… how on earth are people managing to wash their natural hair daily?!

Do y’all wash it in twists to save time and minimize tangles? Are there any shortcuts, like maybe washing every 3 days but still getting similar results? I’d love to know what’s working for others.

Also, where do you find the time for this? Between the washing, detangling, and drying, it feels like a full-time job. Speaking of drying, how do you handle that part? Is your hair air-drying fast enough, or are you blow-drying every time?

I’m really curious and hoping for some tips because this method sounds great, but I need a routine that’s actually doable. Please share your insights and hacks!

Need Advice why did my silk press come out frizzy

i’m still a tad bit upset lmao.

anyways i “silk pressed” (more like a frizz press) my hair for the holidays (i only straighten my hair once a year), and my hair was frizzy immediately after i straightened my hair ): here is what i did and all the products i used! please let me know so that I can improve for next year lol

for some context, i have low porosity, thick, and very dense 4a hair.

  • ACV rinse to get rid of product buildup
  • KENRA clarifying shampoo use a shampoo brush to make sure all the product buildup was out of my hair
  • EDEN body works jojoba monoi moisturizing shampoo
  • TIA 4U lightweight conditioner

deep conditioner : CAmille rose algae renew deep conditioner. sat under a heating cap

let air dry for 30 minutes

  • apply redkin one united leave in condiotioner spray (25)
  • applied fantasia IC Heat protection serum
  • blow dried hair on high heat with revlon paddle brush blow dryer paddle brush blow dried with cool air afterwards

wrapped hair up for the night. started straightening the next morning.

  • slightly blow dried my hair to ensure hair was fully dry
  • Applied fantasia IC heat protectant serum to each section
  • straightened my hair 425 degrees F
  • did the Chase method with a rat tail comb
  • applied argon oil to my hair

  • Hair came out decent, but it was frizz galore.

needless to say i cried cause i was pissed 😭😭 (yes i cry if i don’t like my hair).

can someone please tell me what i did wrong?

Success A tribute to type four hair

All my life I thought I’d never have hair that grows downwards. I used to grow my hair in an Afro and wear it in a high puff. I used to think that my hair would never reach my shoulders until finally it did, and it’s like 4b/c.

There are many people who love to shit talk type four hair and say things that are very negative about that kind of texture hair, but actually it is as diverse as other hair textures and can be worn many different ways.

The people that talk badly about type four hair are the people who usually wouldn’t know what to do if they had someone with 4c hair sitting in a chair in front of them.

Need Advice Switching hair care brands!

I’m contemplating heavily on switching from Mielle to Pattern. For those who use the latter brand, how has it worked for you? My main goal is growth and hydration. Especially now because Florida weather is unpredictable. I’m currently using Mielle’s Rosemary & Mint line, but after seeing all those videos of people having problems with their hair from this specific line, I’m successfully spooked.

Need Advice tender scalp help

are there any at home remedies to scalp soreness? i have always had long hair, and for the last 2.5-3 years i had medium sized locs. this summer, i cut my locs and cut my hair short, getting regular taper fades. i’ve noticed that my scalp (mostly the crown area) is extremely tender and i would like to try some simple fixes. i haven’t been using the best shampoo recently so any recommendations are welcome.
