Success What I wanted vs. what I got
How’d my stylist do?

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.
If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.
It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.
Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY
Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.
Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

I want to get braids because I want to put my hair up in a protective style and not deal with my curls for a bit but I’m afraid of people accusing me of cultural appropriation if I do it. I’m b/w biracial but I feel like without the curls out I look full Caucasian. Would it be a problem if I did it?

hi everyone, i desperately need my hair cut but can’t afford to pay what’s being charged for the shape i want. i went to a natural salon for the first time and had an amazing experience and finally got the shape i wanted but it was $350 before tip & i’d go back in a heart beat if i could afford that but not in this economy lol. this was about 7 months ago and my hair grows very fast so ive been trimming to try and keep up with the shape but it just looks uneven especially in the back. does anyone have advice on maintaining your shape/giving yourself a cut? any videos i could follow? i always get nervous cutting my own hair and this time i definitely made it uneven. the back is also super flat 🙃 1st couple pics r right after my normal wash n go routine & like 90% dry. last pic is day 3 or 4. i definitely want more volume

I've been debating for the longest whether or not I should lock up my hair. I personally think I would look good with them, and I'm not concerned about committing to them, I'm just worried about the maintenance and if I'll be any good at retwisting it when it's time (I want to eventually be able to retwist my own locs properly). I usually keep my natural hair in twists, and then I'll wear it as a twist-out or do other styles. Then I'll wear box braids or faux locs. I rarely press/flat iron my hair (I think the last time was 2 years ago). Idk I just better about myself when I put my hair in a style like braids or faux locs.
My cousin (who's had dreadlocks for years) told me that based off of my hair texture, she thinks sister locs or micro locs would be better for me, but I'm not sure if I want them that small. I'd prefer them to be the size like the last two pics in my post (shoutout to the ladies in those pictures).
Idk what do you all think? Stick with my current routine with my twists, braids, curls, or lock it up???

For context, I grew up in Nigeria and had relaxed hair for most of my life. Decided to go natural sometime in 2021 but had to cut all of my hair off when I moved to the UK in 2022, as I couldn’t manage my natural hair and struggled to find afro hair salons and appointments (stark contrast to Nigeria). Anyway, I started growing my hair again last year and through trials and (innumerable) errors, I not only have learnt to care for my hair in its natural state, but I’ve also somehow been able to make twists with extensions this month. It just seems like a perfect way to end the year! Although it is quite rough and it practically took me an entire day to make it, I am still so proud of how far I have come with my hair journey. And to be honest, this group has been instrumental in my growth. Thank you for all your posts and wishing you all a happy new year in advance.
Pic 3 was first time I attempted to twist my hair this January and 1&2 are from yesterday.

I have 4C hair, and I decided to switch things up! After blow-drying, I styled it into a side twist—and I’m absolutely loving the look.
How do you style your 4C hair after blow-drying? I’m open to trying more ideas!

Does anyone else with a darker skin complexion that has looser curls like mine ever experience interesting comments? Ie: constantly being asked where you're really from even after you say you're black or continuously being asked what you're mixed with evenafter you say you're black, or people asking you for advice and you say leave in conditioner and people swear you're lying or settings them up or something, or people think it's a wig and give you awkward stares pr go out of their way to try to make you feel awkward about it. Sometimes it's hard to wear it out/ love and embrace it when thats what I'm constantly hearing. How do yall deal with it?

Hi my lovely naturals, I have been natural/in and out of protective styles (braids which I do myself, and mini twists with extensions) for a few years now and I clip my own ends. I am not scissor happy but def clip when I feel resistance/for the most part “know when to let go”. My hair has had some growth ever since I started doing this but now my back is evidently longer and the front is short. I believe this is from clipping away damage from sewins/heat damage located more on the top of my head from my past.
But I am now desperate for ways to grow my hair with the hopes of the front catching up so I can wear my hair out more comfortably. Am I clipping my ends too soon? I do it 6-8 weeks so mostly when I take out my protective styles and see tons of ends falling off in the shower. I am chronically iron deficient and need to be better about taking it.
What advice do you have in regards to good practices/additional vitamins to do so?
I wash every week when my hair is out since it is low porosity and gets dry during week. Then I wash every two weeks/month with protective styles.
I have finer hair and it is between 4b/4c, and the pictures go from most recent to oldest. The first two are braids/twist outs after trimming. The very last pic is the same but a year ago. Those in between are puffs from failed twist outs done after wash day. Most pics have product except those in the pink shirt.
Thank you advice is welcome! Pls be nice this is my first time posting here.

I’ve had the revair for about a year and I would often use it to blow out my hair prior to getting braids or cornrows. Today I used it to stretch my twist out and I am amazed by how great it looks! It did a great job of stretching my hair while still being able to keep it defined and I don’t know why I didn’t try this out sooner! Best part is it only took 10 minutes (probably could have been less)! I’d post a picture but I feel like it’s one of those situations where the camera doesn’t do it justice LOL

They are saying the box is the same size as the reference picture I showed. I know it’s hard to clearly see the boxes in the reference but I think it’s pretty clear they are medium.

I'm gonna start washing my hair every week now but do I clarify once a month and shampoo every other week? Or do people just clarify every week? And what if I'm wearing protective styles? Do I have to wash my hair even when twisted or plated?

I just did my big chop about 8 hours ago and my hair already feels very dry, I’m guessing that is an indication of porosity, but I don’t know if it’s high or low. I’m new to the natural hair thing after having my hair relaxed for about 30 years.

Hey!
So I went to a new hairdresser yesterday for a hydration treatment and blow dry (not a flat iron). I wanted to see how straight she could get my hair with blowdry so that I could then flexirod the ends for a blowout natural with loose curls on end.
The ends of my hair (last 1.5 inches) were coiled after the blowdry still. Which, she said was due to me having open cuticles on the ends of my hair that needed to be cut. I explained to her I just got a haircut 3 weeks before (with a different salon that blowdry’d and flat ironed my hair for the cut). She implied they didn’t cut enough (it was about 2 inches they cut).
I want my hair to be healthy, but I have a hard time believing the logic. Can anyone with more hair science knowledge confirm)?
And 2 important things to mention: I can get my hair ends straighter than what she did when I use my revair blow dryer at home on a LOW HEAT setting. And when I got the silk press 3 weeks before my ends were much straighter after only the blowdry portion (not the flat iron) AND this was before she cut 2 inches of my hair. It was high heat.
Hair description: My hair is fully natural, about 3 inches past my shoulders, my strands are fine, but my density is thick. There are no thin areas. And when I twist my hair it looks the same density throughout except the ends taper (an average amount).

I have 4C type hair and my curls are becoming more defined. Ironically, the ends of my hair will cluster together in a clump of a curl that turns into a knot and eventually breaks off. Is there anything I can do to stop this? Should there be products outside of leaving conditioner that I’m using? Really need help on this one.

I tried a wash and go today, which isn’t something I normally do. My usual styles are a ponytail/puff, half up/half down, blown out, or twists. I’ve only done a wash and go maybe 2–3 times before. While it usually looks fine to me right after styling, it just doesn’t look right the next day. I’m trying to feel more comfortable wearing my hair out, especially since I often get headaches. Even though my usual styles are low-maintenance (no extensions or super sleek looks), I think limiting scrunchies and ponytail holders might help.
I love the look of natural hair, but since I’m not used to wearing my hair fully out in a wash and go, it’s hard to embrace how it looks. For reference, my hair is 4B-ish and just past my shoulders, so it doesn’t really fall the way I’d like. What can I do to make my wash and go last for the week, look more ‘presentable’ after sleeping on it, and help me feel more confident wearing my hair out?
