you should abhor Israel aswell

I think that is going a bit far.

You can support Israel's right to exist but abhor the illegal settlements in the West Bank, the apartheid system, and what is going on in Gaza.

Israel as it functions now then if you need clarification

u/The100thIdiot Apr 27 '24

What does that even mean?

u/MumenRiderZak Apr 27 '24

What is confusing to you?

The usage of the verb "functions" for an entire country.

Without specifying anything more, it could refer to anything and everything including the political system, the economy, the utilities...

If you want to be pedantic and ignore context and what I'm replying to sure

-2

u/The100thIdiot Apr 27 '24

I don't believe it is being pedantic.

We are talking about a complex situation and words have meanings. Using the wrong ones is not helpful.

And you assuming my words to mean things I didn't write isn't really bringing anything helpful at all to anything. It's just arguing with no purpose.

Israel is abhorrent. If they decide to stop acting like they are they will seize to be abhorrent.

I never assumed your words to mean anything. I specifically asked what you intended to mean because they were unclear.

Israel is abhorrent.

Again, I disagree with your choice of words.

I believe that the current policies and actions of Netanyahu, the Likud party and their allies are abhorrent.

But that doesn't make the country itself abhorrent.

Did I specify in its current state?

-1

u/The100thIdiot Apr 27 '24

No. You didn't specify anything. And that is the problem I am trying to highlight.

Generalised statements are not helpful.

Otherwise you could equally state that "Palestinians are abhorrent' because of the actions of Hamas.

1

u/MumenRiderZak Apr 27 '24

I did in my first response.

And you could easily say Hamas is abhorrent which they are. But you decided to use Palestinians as your argument instead even trough you know I specifically didn't talk about Israelis or Jews. You argue in bad faith

1

u/The100thIdiot Apr 27 '24

I decided to use "Palestinians" precisely to highlight how problematic it is to use "Israel".

I argue in good faith.

u/MumenRiderZak Apr 27 '24

How so?

0

u/The100thIdiot Apr 27 '24

How so, what?

1

u/MumenRiderZak Apr 27 '24

How does it highlight that?

u/The100thIdiot Apr 27 '24

Are you serious?

You are quite happy to defend a group of people because they aren't responsible for the actions of a subset of that group, but at the exact same time, malign another group of people because of the actions of a subset of that group.

Do you not see how that is intellectually dishonest?

Wtf are you talking about I'm against the actions of the state of Israel. I have nothing against any Israeli that doesn't support the actions of their government.

You clearly are not reading anything I write.

Waste of time
