I got my son a few part upgrades for his PC as a Christmas gift, and Best Buy was installing them for free with warranty so they had his PC for the past week. What I expected to only take them a few hours or a day or so at the most, actually took them over a week to install. Wasn’t a big deal, I understood it was a busy time cause of Christmas, and I worked 5 of those 7 days, so I just let him use my PC. He is 12, and I told him he could put his games on mine and play cause it was the beginning of his break from school, and I took his machine away.
This morning while he was playing on it, the circuit breaker tripped for the outlet that my setup is plugged into. I have a surge protector power strip, and we lose power all the time because the township has been really messing up with the grid lately. So I don’t think anything happened when the breaker tripped, but I just wanted to put the info out there just in case.
Anyway, onto my PC that is having issues now. The problem is that now anytime we launch any game, it crashes. Right now I have been playing Marvel Rivals, and I play other games like WoW, Ark, and a bunch of RTS games. Now I never had any issues until I downloaded Rivals 2 weeks ago. It would run fine for a few matches, and then in the middle of playing, crash to the desktop. I tried updating my drivers and windows updates, and then it seemed to go away. Didn’t really run into any crashing issues again. My son had it this past week and installed god knows how many games, but didn’t tell me he had any issues. Then today after the power issue, he said his games kept crashing whenever he tried to play. I got on and my crashing issue was back with Rivals.
Let me preface this by saying I have a VERY BASIC knowledge of what I’m doing. If someone walks me through steps, I can do something, but I have no clue where to look to begin to solve issues. But here is what I have done so far.
I have updated all the drivers from AMD and NVIDIA, did all my Windows updates, reset the PC countless times during the process of installing drivers, and even tried lowering my resolution settings. Nothing changed. Usually when it crashes it doesn’t tell me why it crashed. No error box or anything. But 1 time I did get “Out of video memory” error box that flashed and then closed on its own. And once my son did get “GPU device was lost. Game cannot continue.” Google is telling me that I need to upgrade my GPU, but I don’t think that’s the actual problem.
I’m running Windows 11 on a RTX 3070ti and a Ryzen 9 7900X processor. Mobo is a Rog Strix B650E-E Gaming WiFi. Running 32GB ram.
I don’t know what else to do to try to fix the crashing issue. Everything else seems to work just fine, but the second a game starts to demand some performance, it just crashes right back to the desktop. Please help.
