I’m worried this debate is a prelude to republicans moving on from Trump to act like they were always normal. And democrats are going to come off as obsessed for reminding Americans just how damaging they were and are

Worked with Bush, it'll work again

Truman won his election solely because his whole campaign was, "remember Hoover?"

For 30 years, Republicans used Carter as their boogeyman to attack Democrats.

I'm sure Trump's shadow will outlive him and make it difficult for Republicans in the future. Not forever but at least the next few election cycles ... especially since we've seen non-Trump Republicans struggle in elections.

By this logic though bush, who ended with the biggest recession since hoover, and honestly the worst possible foreign policy should still be hanging over things still. He's been memory hole'd and a new leader just stepped in like nothing happened. Why can't it happen again?

Not really. Bush hung over the 2012 campaign as well as the 2008 campaign. The only reason he's been memory-holed is because a worse Republican came along.

But it's not infinite and maybe that's where you're confused. Clinton won in 1992, despite Republicans constantly using Carter comparisons (southern governor and all). But using Trump as the boogeyman has been very effective for Democrats. I see no reason for that to change. In fact, I'd say it's been more effective than Bush-mongering ever was.

Democrats killed Republicans in the House in 2018 despite the US being at a pretty healthy state economically and globally (far better than in 1994 and 2009), won in 2020 solely on Trump hate and likely did way better in the midterms in 2022 because of Trump.

Making Vance the heir apparent would be our dream. The dude does not have any charisma and being a Princeton grad debater will not change that.

I sure hope that happens

Republicans dropped Bush/Cheney real fast so they’re able to do it
