PSA Understanding the Weather App’s horizontal bars

Post image
837 Upvotes

Heya, just switched back to iOS since the iPhone 10, and checking the weather, I was greeted by a confusing interface. I was having trouble understanding what the horizontal bars mean in the weather app and why anyone thought they were useful.

After lots of Googling and soul searching I’ve finally come to understand it, and just wanted to share the dumb little diagram I’ve made since it would have saved this visual learner a lot of time.

This is not an endorsement of Apple’s unintuitive design decisions*

PSA Warning to anyone using RCS:

You might have “send as text message turned off”, but this doesn’t apply to RCS. So let’s say you sent a video to someone but they weren’t in an area with coverage temporarily, unlike iMessage where it’ll wait for them to come online, RCS on iPhone just sends it as an expensive MMS instead. I can’t find a valid reason why they’ve done this, other than to kick people who use RCS in the teeth.

PSA ULTRA Secure iPhone tip (iOS 17.5)

In light of rising incidents in London and other cities where thieves on mopeds snatch unlocked iPhones directly from users’ hands, it’s crucial to set up your device to protect against unauthorised access and data loss. Here’s a practical guide to securing your iPhone if it falls into the wrong hands, particularly when it is still unlocked.

First, be aware that once thieves have your phone, they commonly activate Airplane mode to disconnect it from any network, preventing the phone from being tracked or remotely locked via Find My iPhone. To counteract this, you should use the Shortcuts app to create a specific automation:

  1. Open the Shortcuts app and go to the “Automation” tab.

  2. Create a new automation for when Airplane mode is turned off.

  3. Add an action to this automation to lock the screen immediately when Airplane mode is deactivated.

  4. Include another action in the same automation to disable Airplane mode.

This setup ensures that if a thief tries to turn on Airplane mode, your iPhone will automatically lock and immediately turn Airplane mode back off, keeping the device connected to the internet.

For additional security: - Go to your Screen Time settings and disable the ability to toggle mobile data on or off. This prevents quick disconnection attempts via the control center.

  • Adjust your Face ID settings to deny access to the control center when the screen is locked.

These settings effectively safeguard your device by locking out the thief from making significant changes to your device’s connectivity or accessing personal information. Remember to disable these automations temporarily when you genuinely need to use Airplane mode, like during flights.

I've also attached some screenshots (based on iOS 17.5) to guide you through the setup process. By implementing these settings, you can significantly reduce the risk of losing control over your personal data in case your phone is snatched while in use. Stay safe and secure!

PSA Be careful if Siri notifies you about a text message with AirPods on....

Problem fixed comments told me to go on settings > Siri > messaging with Siri > toggle off automatically send messages.

I had my AirPod pros 2 on and Siri let me know that I got a text from a weekly text that my jobs company sends. It's just a reminder so it's automated. I thought it was a personal text but then I kept listening and realized it was work related and in a joking way I said "ahh shut the f**** up". She didn't ask me if I wanted to respond, she didn't confirm anything, she just sent it. Luckily no messages go through but that would have been my ass if it was my manager. Lol. Apple has some insane bugs with this update that they are not bringing to light.

PSA UPDATE: In less than 24 hours, /r/iOS will be going private indefinitely.

1.2k Upvotes

Update to our post from a couple hours ago announcing our immediate shut down of posting.

Hi everyone,

We apologise for the back and forth messaging here, but we just wanted to update our community on our intentions to make /r/iOS private (from restricted) in the next 24 hours. This follows on from our most recent announcement made a couple hours ago where we took the subreddit restricted (meaning, the subreddit would still be visible but no new posts would come through). Please read that post too, for the full context on the situation.

This was not an easy decision to make, given a variety of factors, but it's one we feel comfortable making. Anything that was posted before the restricted mode came into effect earlier today will essentially be the final front page of our community before we privatise the subreddit entirely. In the (somewhat unlikely) scenario that Reddit's leadership has a change of direction that sees the reversal the recent API policy change, we will reopen the subreddit, but until this happens, /r/iOS will be unavailable for use in any capacity whatsoever. Many other subreddits are doing the same, and we support them for taking a stand.

FAQ:

Q: What does making /r/iOS private mean, in this case?

A: Taking /r/iOS private means that no-one, except moderators and approved submitters, can see the subreddit's front page. When attempting to access the subreddit, you will be met with a blank screen stating "r/iOS has been set to private by its subreddit moderators."

Q: What does indefinite mean in this case?

A: Originally, the protest was planned to be 48 hours. However, after a shambolic AMA held by Reddit's CEO, it has become clear to us that Reddit doesn't intend to act in good faith. When the CEO is willing to lie and spread libellous claims about another third-party developer, and then try double down by vilifying them, again, in an AMA, despite being proven as a liar by the developer through audio recordings, that's when we knew what we were up against. Therefore, the subreddit will be privatised until such time as a reasonable resolution is proposed.

Q: Won't Reddit just remove you as moderators and force open the subreddit?

A: This is very possible. Reddit has made it clear on various occasions that they will do what they need to do in order to keep the site running. We, as mods, are prepared for this outcome. None of us want to moderate for a site that continues to gaslight its user-base, disrespect third-party developers and moderators, or do volunteer work for a site run by a CEO who spreads outright lies and libellous claims against those who helped build it into the front page of the internet.

Q: Where else can I go to discuss iPhone's and/or iOS?

Feel free to join our affiliated Discord server. This server is supported by, and run by, members of the subreddit mod team.

Lastly, thank you. Whatever happens to us moderators, we want to thank you for helping make /r/iOS the place it is today. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching this community grow, and we understand it wouldn't be anywhere near where it is today without you, the users. We haven't always got stuff right, but we hope you understand we've always wanted what's best for the community. Hopefully we'll be back together soon, but the ball is in Reddit's court. What happens next is down to them and them alone. Let's just hope they do the right thing, and come to us with a proper resolution.

See you soon, hopefully.

/r/iOS Mod Team.

PSA Apple confirms notifications to some users about spyware infection

Apple has confirmed that it has notified an undisclosed number of iOS users in 92 countries that their phone was infected with spyware.

The specific spyware detected is known as Pegasus, created and sold by Israeli based NSO Group. Pegasus utilizes an incredibly complex attack chain that allows threat actors to subvert security measures on iOS and Android devices and obtain persistent kernel access to view all content and data within the device. NSO Group sells Pegasus for millions of dollars (US) to nation states such as Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, with several dozen other countries suspected of deploying it. While NSO Group continues to claim they only sell their products to nation state governments for the purpose of investigating threats of terrorism, security researchers have concluded this is categorically false, with investigations revealing its use to surveil journalists, attorneys, political opponents, and human rights activists, including their associates and family members.

Apple has provided the following guidance for better protecting against such attacks:

1) Enable Lockdown Mode on the device to reduce the attack surface. 2) Update all Apple products, including iPhone, Mac, and iPad, to the latest software version. 3) Seek expert assistance from organizations like the Digital Security Helpline for additional support.

Additionally, here are some other best practices:

1) Install Emergency Security Updates as soon as they become available. These OS updates are released off-cycle to patch recently discovered vulnerabilities. 2) Never click on a link you are not 100% confident in. Often, these malware and spyware packages are delivered through convincing links. Threat actors can spoof a number to make it look like the link is coming from a known contact. 3) Use a reliable VPN whenever possible.

While it’s unlikely the average iOS user will ever encounter spyware like Pegasus, maintaining technological security is imperative for all.

PSA PSA: don’t enable Offload Unused Apps, you can lose apps you’ve previously bought if they’re removed from the App Store

I just went through my phone trying to redownload a bunch of older games and apps back onto my phone, and I’ve lost access to about 15 different apps and games I’d still happily use if they were downloaded.

You’re better off manually managing your storage rather than letting the OS make arbitrary decisions about which apps to remove from your phone.
