Nah, he wasn't going too fast as he made the corner. It's just, like /u/mikez2605 said, a bit naive to make this move into this specific corner. Not necessarily wrong but it's a big risk to take.
1st of all, kerbs are less grippy than the tarmac, thus his turning performance is compromised by being there. 2ndly, he has a very shallow line, his turn radius is reduced meaning he needs to be slower to achieve the same rate of turn as someone with a higher turn radius. the fact that he was approximately the same speed as raikonen, who had a bigger turn radius to work with, means that collision was inevitable.
out of curiosity, how much racing experience have you got and how long have you followed f1?
the contact between kimi and max came as a result of max and kimi's respective track position, and their speeds. assuming they are more or less max performing the turning performance of their cars, max cannot take a tighter line, and turn at the same rate as kimi if they are travelling at the same speed. its just simple physics. by not braking sufficiently, max made it that contact was inevitable. had he braked sufficiently, he wouldnt have made it alongside kimi, and the whole incident wouldnt have happened as kimi would then have been able to put his inside wheels on the kerb, and vettel wouldnt have hit him.
sitting in the stands at t1, as soon as i saw max's shitty start, and his move to the inside, i knew contact was coming. it was painfully predictable...
seeing as it was at the start, and it involved a bunch of variables however, it may well be just a racing incident, but max then went on to give numerous other examples of poor judgement/driving throughout the race - punting several drivers off the track, and doing his 3rd sudden blocking move in 3 races. do we agree on this atleast?
I winced as well as it was a dangerous move, but saying contact is inevitable is just wrong. Max wasn´t going too fast, he was making the corner. Kimi probably would´ve still came out ahead.
Obviously it was a very poor race by Max, I don´t think anyone will deny this.
i went ahead and checked out your post history - no surprise to see you are dutch. also, no surprise to see that you only very recently started to post in /r/formula1.
what was the content of your f1 related posts? defending max in the rosberg incident in germany by claiming that he was simply turning into the corner and not blocking. and you claim to have karted and followed f1 for a long time? im going to assume that was bullshit as noone with any racing experience could have that interpretation.
notice how kimis car is significantly more angled into the corner? notice how max is in full lock? max is behind in angles, has less grip from being on the kerb, yet is travelling at the same speed. his turn radius is too small, and his speed is too high to turn at the required rate given the amount of space he has. collision was inevitable and it was purely max's fault.

Shut the fuck up you creepy crawler. I have posted in /r/formula1 for many years. I really, really can't express as to how much of a jackass you come off. Yes, I'm Dutch. I've never hidden this fact. No, I wasn't lying. I'm not even a fan of Max fucking Verstappen you dense idiot. You are a stupid fucking idiot who's a waste of oxygen and assumes way too many fucking things.
Stop typing long fucking messages and putting yourself on a gigantic fucking high horse. You don't know jack shit about racing a formula 1 car through la source. People that DO know their shit agree with my opinion.
Repeat the last two sentences after me until they get through your thick skull.
Also good fucking job explaining racing by using an image.

Max had a shit start and was trying to make up for it and carried too much speed for him to brake.
