I teach college and every semester this comes up and there is always that one student who says “the Civil War was not about slavery, it was economics.” To which I always reply, “You’re right, it would have been economically terrible for those states to have to start paying their workers”

They generally don’t like that response.

I took a 300 Econ course about the civil war in college on the first day the professor said

“So the Civil War was about slavery. If you want to be able to explain why in excruciating detail stick around if not there is still time to drop”

One of my favorite classes in college. There is actually a surprising amount of interesting data about this era available from primary sources that explains what was happening.

Tell them that every test and quiz will contain this question. If they answer incorrectly, they fail the class automatically.
