Question Chicken's feet look red / irritated

Help! Chickaletta's feet are looking red and irritated. She is walking a little slower than the other birds. No other birds have redness on their feet. I just did a full clean up of the coop. There are only 4 of them, and they have a lot of space. Should I soak her feet in Epsom salt or get some type of antibacterial spray? What do you think it is? I don't see any mites or anything anywhere. I looked up bumble foot but she doesn't have any swollen bump like that.

Discussion Hawk just attacked my chicken and crows came and saved her!!

I didn't even know we had crows in texas but a hawk just swooped down and got my girl Tabitha and 3 crows came to the rescue and he let her go. She does have a cut on her back where he grabbed her but other than that she's alive and safe!

I was curious if anyone else has experience with crows and if it's worth attracting them to protect our hens. We have a rooster but Tabitha seperated from the flock for a moment so he wasn't there to help her. It would be awsome to have another little friend watching out for them when our roo and dogs arent around a distracted hen.

I heard crows could get chicks or eggs but will they ignore them if you provide them with regular snacks?

Question Nasty, wet chicken run

We have 12 ladies, and their chicken run can get awfully muddy and nasty. We are costal, so our typical “soil” is about 2-4 inches of actual soil, then sand. I figured that their run would drain nicely because of the sand and the surrounding trees sucking up the water, but it doesn’t. Add to that the amount chicken crap that a dozen birds put out, and, well, see the heading.

Anyone have similar issues that they were able to address?

I’ve thought about putting a French-drain around the run, but I have those roots I’d have to contend with.

Thanks for any insight

Question Help! Weird concerning chicken poop!!

I have 9 healthy looking, active chickens in a 4x8 coop. There is snow on the ground so they haven’t been able to free range lately so they’ve been in their kinda small run (not super small, but not huge) anyways, I’ve noticed the past week they have been having weird poops. Some of them have been having watery poop, some have been having an almost chunky bloody poop (pictures of what I mean below) and I’m really worried. One of my chickens got attacked about a week ago but survived (she has this giant bald spot under her wing) and I’ve noticed since I’ve been keeping a close eye on her she’s had watery poop (not sure if she had them before then or what) she is also a little less active since,I’m pretty sure it’s not just her having those weird poops. I ran out of their pellet food so for the past 2 days they’ve been having mostly corn but I’m going to get some more today, besides that I’ve been giving them blueberries, spinach, I have gave them some egg, banana earlier on in the week. I don’t know what’s happening, it almost looks like intestinal shedding, but is happening often.

Thanks! (Also if you need more info I will tell you in the comments!)

Tell me your funniest chicken story

Here’s mine: a few years back hawk swooped down and stole one of my chickens. I guess she was too chunky and moved a lot because she fell two yards over and still lives to this day

Question Really long nails

I noticed one of my chickens has really long nails. I never noticed anything like this with any of the other chickens but she usually stays far away from people, so I don't know how long she's been like this.

This doesn't seem normal so I wanted to ask, do I attempt to catch her and clip them? Should I go little by little? Any info would be appreciated.

In case it's important she's really small, fully grown adult but about the size of your average mango. I don't know much about this but if my chicken is in any pain I'd like to know how to fix it.

This pic is more or less what I saw when I got the closest possible, but she ran away soon after. https://i.imgur.com/7dtqHVF.jpeg

Discussion Just a thought…

Probably not in majority but I don’t charge for my eggs….I originally did plan on selling them but I found out it brings me a lot of happiness just giving them to people who I know will really love and appreciate not only the eggs but the chickens too (I talk about the chicken drama a lot and we’re all way to invested at this point 😂). That’s all. Thanks for coming to my ted talk ☺️

Question What do you look for in a heated chicken waterer?

Pretty self explanatory, I'm trying to get a heated watering system because it freezes way too quickly. I'd really like to know what systems proved useful and durable for y'all. Much appreciated. ❤️ Stay warm. Drink water. ❤️

Question Advice on Starting a Mixed Flock

I started my first flock last summer with 3 Rhode Island Red hens that were all raised together from day-old chicks. I would like to expand my flock this spring with some new hens and have been exploring different breeds but online sources have conflicting information, so I am seeking some real-world advice from experienced chicken keepers. I'd love to know what breeds you would recommend.

My priorities for expanding my flock are:
- good egg producers (dual purpose breeds are fine, but not seeking meat birds)
- not broody
- hardy in all climates (heat hardiness is more important than cold hardiness)
- friendly personality (calm is preferred, but active would be ok too)
- ability to get along well with my existing Rhode Island Red hens

Question what can I put on the floor of a chicken run (my chickens do not free range)

I can't free range my chickens (too many hawks, foxes, roads right next to us, etc.), so they spend most of their time in a run, besides when I sit out of it with them for 30-60 minutes a day. before, or had a bunch of chipped up trees i put on the floor of their run. but I've run out of the mulch they created - what can I use for the floor of a run that they spend most of their time in?

I'm not asking about the coop. I use pine shavings in the coop, cleaned out regularly.
