Discussion Hawk just attacked my chicken and crows came and saved her!!

I didn't even know we had crows in texas but a hawk just swooped down and got my girl Tabitha and 3 crows came to the rescue and he let her go. She does have a cut on her back where he grabbed her but other than that she's alive and safe!

I was curious if anyone else has experience with crows and if it's worth attracting them to protect our hens. We have a rooster but Tabitha seperated from the flock for a moment so he wasn't there to help her. It would be awsome to have another little friend watching out for them when our roo and dogs arent around a distracted hen.

I heard crows could get chicks or eggs but will they ignore them if you provide them with regular snacks?

Tell me your funniest chicken story

Here’s mine: a few years back hawk swooped down and stole one of my chickens. I guess she was too chunky and moved a lot because she fell two yards over and still lives to this day

Probably not in majority but I don’t charge for my eggs….I originally did plan on selling them but I found out it brings me a lot of happiness just giving them to people who I know will really love and appreciate not only the eggs but the chickens too (I talk about the chicken drama a lot and we’re all way to invested at this point 😂). That’s all. Thanks for coming to my ted talk ☺️

She’s been losing tons of feathers lately and now this. I just finished a long haul treating her sisters vent prolapse and reintroduced them over the last few days. General feather loss started a week ago though while her sister was in quarantine. Bugs?

Question First eggs for Christmas! How do I know who’s laying?

Post image

I got my chicks in the beginning and end of July and just got my first eggs on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! How do I figure out who’s laying?

I think my darker egg is from my Mystic Maran but I have a variety of other breeds- One Olive Egger Two Golden Laced Wyandottes One Black Sex Link Three Buff Orphingtons One Sapphire Gem One Mystic Maran

My Olive Egger and Mystic Maran have been squatting in a mating like position for me lately- does that mean it’s likely them?

Question Easter Egger or cream legbar?

I’m looking for a small to medium lg fowl chicken that is friendly to people and other chickens, have friendly roosters, likes to be held or petted, are somewhat predator aware and predator resilient, and overall easy to care for. After researching I came to a conclusion that legbars, and Easter eggers are the closest that meet what I’m looking for. Any recommendations, or suggestions of what kind I should get, or what seem to be a better breed?

Thanks!

(Bonus if the roosters are good at alerting or protecting! And if the moms are good moms!.)

Question To cut or not to cut?

Looks like one of our hens (bb) got got by either another hen or the frisky rooster? We really don't know what happened. We have her separated from the flock. Got it cleaned up, the bleeding stopped and some tripple antibiotic on it. Now here is the question.... Did some research and have seen where some folks in a similar situation were recommended to cut off the flap hanging down. Figured I'd ask some folks with more experience than I what their take is. A vet is not an option.

I thought I had posted a pic, check comments.
