This Machine Still Kills Facists

Upvotes

Aka a mostly acoustic album by the Dropkick Murphys, hailing from PodMom Loftus' hometown, Boston.

They cover and sample some Guthrie songs, which is nothing new as one of their most famous songs, Shipping Up to Boston, used his lyrics. But that wasn't even the first time they did that (There's Gon a Be A Blackout Tonight).

Tldr - Dropkick Murphys love Woody too and are keeping his spirit alive.

General discussion What Groups/Orgs Attract the Most Leftists?

Apologies in advance for copy/pasting this on a few subs.

I’m from a large but isolated town in the midwest. There are a couple of college towns 30+ minutes in away as well as a small city that’s a bit further, but there are almost no leftist groups outside of these locations. The city really only has Food Not Bombs and the DSA, and the colleges have some abandoned book clubs on FaceBook and probably some student orgs but I’m not a student.

I want to start something in my area because there’s no way I’m the only leftist in a 50 mile radius, but what will grab the most eyes and retain the most members? A reading club? Mutual aid group? I’m signed up to help out at my local food pantry so there’d be no use setting up something similar to that. I really don’t know what other options there are, let alone what I can do to find people who would join.

Does anyone have ideas or experience with something like this?

Listening to the episodes about Scott Adams before work and I hear a song from The Boondocks suddenly play and I feel like I'm having an out of body experience.

Just chilling with the pod on and they're talking about the downfall of the Dilbert TV show and how Adams blames the network shifting towards a black audience and music sting from The Boondocks just starts playing very loudly out of nowhere and I'm questioning if it's a very strangely chosen sound drop in the pod or I'm hallucinating before I realize someone's ringtone is going off. It was the strangest timed thing but it amused me because here they are talking about Adams blaming black people on his failing while a very successful and fantastic adult cartoon based on a comic strip made about black people by black people starts playing disembodied out of fucking nowhere.

Politics If Woody Guthrie was a Liberal

Was listening to the Woody Guthrie episode and I thought I'd do this mock-up of what he'd look like as a liberal.

Woody Guthrie's also had a song about Donald Trump's slumlord father

I can't believe Robert Evans didn't mention this song by Woody Guthrie about Donald Trump's slumlord father. For all of his faults, Guthrie was something of a prophet of our modern era:

Merchant Marines in WWII

Pretty sad and interesting backstory to this role in WWII - while the men are now considered combat veterans and certainly were in just as much danger as combat veterans, they weren't considered as such after the war. Several of my great-uncles were merchant marines, and I learned they weren't eligible for any veteran benefits until 1988 (the same year my merchant marine gay great-uncle died, so he never got any recognization or benefit).

So for all of them, no medical care, education benefits, home loans, burial in military cemeteries, etc, until 1988. That's 43 years after the end of WWII, and well after Guthrie died.

I wanted to get the dates right so I looked it up just now, and there's a sick (in a bad way) quote from Charles Dana Gibson, apparently a former merchant marine himself, in a 2010 article from a Jacksonville, FL newspaper (the article itself is good), saying how merchant marines, in 2010, who want a pension are just greedy and how they weren't in that much danger. The men were late 80s and older at time of that article. Journalist provides facts after the quote proving him wrong.

Anyway, to say, Woody Guthrie would've never been considered a veteran under the benefits of the law or have any formal recognition. It wasn't worth touching in the episode itself I'm sure, as it's not relevant, but I think it's another interesting piece if you're curious.

More Woody Stories

If this week left you with a hankering for Woody tales, check out Arlo’s song and storytelling concert Here Come the Kids. The Guthrie kids put together a centennial celebration for their father’s 100th birthday and I guess Arlo just never stopped because he was still touring 2 years later. The songs are interspersed with stories about folk music, Woody, and Arlo’s life.

General discussion Trying to understand and be empathetic towards an issue, would appreciate opinions/advice

Hi all! I grew up being taught that all panhandlers are to be scorned and have generally expunged that belief from myself. Yeah there's scammers out there, but I'm being scammed out of a pension by corporate greed so who cares if I give someone a few bucks right. But the one thing that just continues to make my hackles go up is when I see people making there kids sit out there and panhandle with them. I try to take a step back and remind myself that when people are homeless with kids paying for childcare is obviously out of the question, but also, these kids should be in school. Why are they not in school? For public schools it's not like they're checking if parents are giving them the address of a shelter, right? There's also the possibility that I think of that kids could be being used to guilt trip people into giving more money when they have a place to go that's not the corner of an intersection. I know there's a lot of misinformation that goes around about child exploitation, but there's times where I really wonder that if the adult stepped away and the kid was allowed to speak freely, what would they say? I've been grappling with this for a while and would appreciate people's thoughts on the issue. I know logically there's perfectly normal reasons why kids would be taken panhandling with their parents, but sometimes there's a voice in the back of my head saying "what if?"

Everything sucks

I don’t even want to be alive anymore.

Is anything ever going to get better

The internet fucking sucks, especially social media. It's all just racism and spam ads now. Al is going to grow until it becomes indistinguishable from reality.

Trumps going to crash the economy with tariffs

The government programs that I rely on are going to be cut because of DOGE

Im a 20-something year old living with my parents.

I cannot endure another 4 years of budget cuts. I rely on these government programs and musk is going to cut all of them.

I will literally die if I don't have Obama care, and that looks to be on the chopping block

I fucking hate Elon musk, Donald Trump, all of them. I hate the people that voted for him and I hope to god that if trump succeeds in his budget cuts, that it hits his voters the hardest.

I hope every last one of his voters get 100% fucked over. Homelessness. Medical bankruptcy. Starvation.

Because im fucked if these programs get cut. 77 million people looked me right in the face and told me to go fuck myself.

There's no hope for a nation that voted for this.

I would like to think that it would have been easier if I lived in XYZ country, but the cost of living crisis has hit every corner of the earth. Everywhere is fucked.

Everything is about politics these days. My ResistLib mom always wants the news on and I can’t stand it. She’s constantly yelling at the tv or in an argument with my dad about whatever trump did.

And I have to do another four years of this shit. It’s been 9.5 years already since he came down the escalator and I can’t do this anymore.

The fascists won. I’m never coming out of the closet.

I go back and forth of whether this godforsaken nation is really just fucking stupid for sincerely believing trump would lower prices, or if this is like the 1980 election in which it was a backlash against civil rights of the 1960’s and 1970’s (this time being trans rights)

I really don’t feel like living at this point.

Anyone else ever been told by a mental health professional that they should stop consuming news and history? I’ve had a Psychiatrist and a therapist both tell me to log off. Not just for a break but for good. I listen to Democracy Now and the Majority Report every day and various other podcasts when I have time (on the media, BTB, Some more news, stuff like that). I’m sure it gives me anxiety and some degree of hopelessness but when I don’t I feel alone and disconnected. Not to mention guilty. I realize that I’m lucky to have mental health care at all (no it’s not covered and no I can’t afford it but I could afford it before I had insurance). I also realize I’m in a place of great privilege in that I can (at least for now) stick my head in the sand. I know that my brain is physically defective. I take at least 7 pills a day to try to maintain a somewhat normal life. I think I’ve started rambling here. I was just kind of wondering if anyone else feels like anxiety and depression are the rational response to reality.

Edit to say I’m actually supposed to be working right now but I wanted to say what a great community this is and that I’m going to come back and read and contemplate all of these comments.

Edited again to say. Wow what a community. I want everyone to know I’m ok. I’ve had some very dark periods in my life and this honestly is not that bad in comparison to some of the others. I was out of therapy for a long time because I was doing really well but a few years ago I went through some hard times and went back. I’m really very lucky that I do have so much support. I’ve got a very good and accommodating work situation. My family is pretty supportive and my immediate family at least are not fascist. I’ve actually got a wife and our relationship is healthy. The one thing that has come up over and over again in the comments is getting more involved in my local community. I think that’s a very good idea. I don’t know exactly what yet. I’m in a pretty small very conservative town in South Carolina so I might have to get creative with it. I’ll figure something out though. Helping people has always been good for me. Thank you all. Even the cynical bastards who see the world for the dumpster fire it really is. Game recognize game.
