The Chesapeake Bay is the Real Bay Area

Okay, I need to get this off my chest: why does everyone just automatically call San Francisco the Bay Area? Like, when did we all agree on this? Because I definitely don’t remember signing that petition. And every time someone says it, I can’t help but think, “Wait, are we just ignoring the Chesapeake Bay?”

Let’s put this in perspective: the Chesapeake Bay is 4,480 square miles. That’s huge. San Francisco Bay? 1,600 square miles, tops. It’s like comparing a watermelon to a cantaloupe. Sure, both are cool, but one is clearly bigger and more deserving of attention. And yet, when you say “the Bay Area,” everyone immediately thinks tech bros and overpriced avocado toast, not a massive ecosystem that spans six states.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The San Francisco Bay has great PR. It’s like the popular kid in school who everyone knows and talks about, even though they’re not actually that interesting. Meanwhile, the Chesapeake Bay is like the quiet overachiever who does all the work but never gets invited to the party.

And don’t get me started on the history. The Chesapeake Bay has been around forever! Well, not literally forever, but long enough to be part of, ya know, America’s founding story. Colonial trade, seafood that fed entire economies, battles fought on its waters... it’s like the Swiss Army knife of bays. What’s San Francisco Bay’s historical claim to fame? Gold rushes and... tech companies?

I don’t know... maybe it’s just me, but it feels like a branding issue. The Chesapeake Bay doesn’t have a slick nickname or a billion-dollar tech sector boosting its visibility. It’s just quietly being the largest bay in the country, doing its thing. And honestly, it deserves more credit.

So, next time someone says “the Bay Area,” maybe stop and think for a second. Are we really talking about the most deserving bay, or are we just going along with what’s trendy? Because, let’s be real, the Chesapeake Bay could eat San Francisco Bay for breakfast and still have room for dessert.

Employers should face repercussions for high turn over rates

Upvotes

Primarily in entry level positions. If a company is constantly over hiring because they know no one will want to stay long term, they should have to figure out why no one wants to stay. Turn over makes more sense in competitive or specialized jobs, but in places like Walmart and dollar general it's usually just because of the working conditions. Am I wrong here, is it impossible to avoid crazy high turnover?

I hate gaming laptops with 16 inch screen

Upvotes

Now 16 inch screen is new trend, but aspect ratio 16:10 is bad for gaming because:

1) if you zoom in, you lose the sideview and it's bad for competitive gaming. Basically you trade sides to more up and down spaze which is not necessary.

2) if you stretch, proportions looks not natural.

3) if you keep 16:9 you get black borders and it kills immersion.

4) for many games you have to search for workarounds, even new games like Wukong does not go well with 16:10.

5) 16:9 will be standard for games and movies for a long time, it's not going to change, so 15'6 and 17'3 laptops are way better than 16. It's really strange that manufacturers are pushing 16 inch so hard.

I don’t get the idea of surprise proposals

We’ve all heard horror stories about public proposals where one of them said no and humiliated everyone around them. I just don’t get the idea of surprise proposals? „I think he might propose“ Have you never discussed marriage before? It is insanely stupid to expect a surprise proposals where without having told them beforehand that you are ready for marriage, for both sides.

Of course, the proposal itself (the date, ring, etc.) could be a surprise if you prefer it that way, but people propose to each other without discussing if they are ready for marriage before?

I wish I would get more zits

Upvotes

I love popping zits and seeing puss come out. I don’t get them nearly as much as I did in the past and I was just fantasizing about popping them. I love the sharp pain with the final release of puss from the pressurized area. Is this crazy, or more universal than I realize?

The Bridgerton TV show is better than the book.

I read the first two, and wasted hours of my life. The books are mostly conversation between the two main characters, like 90-95%. Not much in the way of setting, nothing in the way of character development outside of the 2 main character couples. Shoot, the first book was all Daphne and Hastings for 98% of it minus the couple lines her mom and the brother had.
The show is so much better, the writers definitely took the time to read the series before starting the show since they plug in things from the other books into the first season. the other characters were developed that don’t even make an appearance in the first books get such a deep story that’s it’s admirable and much more interesting; Lady Danbury, Edwina, lady Featherington just to name a few. My favoritism might come down to love for history and historical fiction, which do a great job reliving the era, the books do none of that. The books are mostly a dialogue between the 2 main protagonist and are boring.

Life in prison is a worse punishment than the death penalty

1.0k Upvotes

Most people see the death penalty as the worst possible punishment but I actually think life in prison is worse.

Prison isn't a place anyone wants to be so by giving someone a life sentence you're basically giving them the most amount of suffering you could legally give to someone. To be stuck knowing you'd never get out, never be free, that this is the all you'll experience until you die seems worse than just being killed. It seems like the death penalty with extra suffering.

Super Mario Odyssey is the worst Mario platformer

I find the hat mechanics tedious, the level design is all style no substance, and it's almost as obscene of a collectathon than dk64. Every hat form has one move and is extremely temporary and typically only works for one task in one spot. Boring. I hate having to throw the hat for the best jumps, just unnecessarily complicating traversal. I've seen the creators say things about sunshine like "we regret not making this more accessible to people who don't play videogames" and I get why you want pop appeal with your games, I really do.. but Odyssey is what you get with that philosophy, there's no challenge at all. Walk to next moon in silly area, rinse, repeat. the moons are so absurdly plentiful that it isn't fun to collect them and makes even people into that sort of thing not want to bother, what's the point? It had a few cute moments, I didn't hate the boss in the soup bowl and running up the vomit. Didn't hate the T-Rex reveal at the beginning, that was cool. but theming an entire game around hats was a swing and a big fat miss for me. World is the best 2d platformer in the series, sunshine is the best 3d platformer in the series, and thousand year door is the best game Mario has been in, and it's by a country mile.

Individuality is superior to conforming to society/family.

If you focus to your own individuality, then you don't have to force yourself to be someone you are truly not deep down in your soul or heart or whatever other metaphor to express that idea. Why have kids, why question if every tiny action is a sin, why go to college, if you strive to be like others.. why? Why be scared that people won't accept you, why change your life regularly instead of being content. You can just be honest with yourself on what makes you comfortable. You can be honest with yourself on what you truly believe behind the mask. What makes you, YOU?

Online multiplayer has ruined gaming and gamers

1.1k Upvotes

As a kid in the 80s and 90s, we’d play games after school and sometimes even a few times a week. Most of our time was spent outdoors with friends or during those rare gaming sessions with four people playing Goldeneye. Everyone understood that gaming was meant to be fun and a bit of a distraction. When parents called us for dinner, we’d jump out of the game without a fuss.

Nowadays, everyone believes they’re the next Twitch “star” or influencer who’s made gaming an integral part of their personality. They think everything they do is super competitive and can’t leave a game to eat or talk to someone. (Oh my gosh, they knew I joined a game! I can’t abandon my team because I won’t be able to upgrade my fake online experience, which has no real meaning in life!)

Gaming is supposed to be fun and a way to take a break. But the amount of meltdowns I see and hear about these days is concerning. It’s as if everyone thinks everything is competitive, even when it’s all just digital nonsense. Relax, folks! It’s just a game. It doesn’t matter at all. Take a break and speak to your family, friends, or partner for real.

I still enjoy gaming, but when it’s time to be with my kids or my wife, I log off because it doesn’t matter at all. Real connections do.

That’s why I miss local multiplayer gaming. It was the last real way to game together before social media took over and caused these drastic behavioral changes in gamers.

Expecting to be taken care of, by your children in old age, is selfish.

1.1k Upvotes

I come from a big family where it’s normal to expect your children to take care of you in old age. I am in my 30’s and I’m already thinking of how I will prepare myself for old age. I don’t want to burden my child with any issues when I’m old and can’t take care of myself. If they want to help out that would be a choice, NOT a requirement.

I’ve seen a lot of people my age who don’t save for retirement, are not focused on their kids and on top of that keep getting into debt. They “joke” that they’re not worried because their kids will be rich and take care of them.

NIL is ruining college sports and college athletes should not be paid

The fact that so many players are transferring to other schools just to get more money is ridiculous. There were 8 Miami Hurricane mens basketball players who transferred when the team was in the final four in 2023. That’s ridiculous and goes to show that a lot of the college athletes don’t care about loyalty or even if they’re playing for a good team, just that they can get a big payday. College athletes should not be making millions of dollars. Just today I saw that a college football player is being paid $8,000,000 and it’s ridiculous. That kind of money should be left for the pros.

Reading a book is different than listening to an audiobook.

They literally use different parts of the brain for understanding. Reading comprehension comes from *reading*, not from *listening*. I'm so tired of people saying they've "read" books when they just listened to an audiobook. When you ask them about any kind of details, they've got nothing - because it isn't the same.

We should bring back online spaces for tweens/younger teenagers

the "online kid mmo" games need to be back for tweens. That's the safest place for them. Its a shame that younger children/teens need to be on such mature websites/apps because there's literally no where for them to go.

Calling someone's hypocrisy out does not disprove their argument

It is by definition an Ad Hominem fallacy argument

You try to form a counterargument to their point, by citing a personal trait of the argumenter, that has nothing to do with the argument or discussion at hand.

Proving that someone is a hypocrite and therefore not doing as they preach, does not mean what they preach is wrong.

Eminem’s music is just absolutely awful

I really just don’t understand the hype.

His voice is really irritating, the beat and music to his music is not great either— and he gets way to much fame and recognition, idk just not even mid.

The movie Elemental (2023) is not just “Zootopia but with elements instead of animals”.

I think the marketing and trailers for this movie did a lot of damage by making it look like a shallow Zootopia clone. When really it’s a movie about immigration, which is what separates it from Zootopia (2016).

Sure the bunny in Zootopia is immigrating to a new city, but the city is 90% prey, so it is very much normal and welcoming for her kind to be living there, as she is the majority. But the city in Elemental was not made for fire people, and they faced a lot of discrimination and challenges. That is what makes the movie’s plot very very different from Zootopia. The plots of both movies play out differently in lots of other ways too. Unfortunately, most people just watch the trailers and think it’s Zootopia but with elements.

Blue Ivy does not have strong dance skills

Watching her perform on stage, she is so stiff and awkward, she really doesn’t bring a huge stage presence or positive energy. I get that she’s just a young girl, but why put her in this public situation if she’s really not got the skills, it’s nepotism at its absolute worst, because the bottom line is Bey is putting her out there to get slammed. Also, If it’s not nepotism, she’d be at the back, just a regular dancer in with the other line up.

She’s in no way ready to be front and central. Shows you the downside of having too many Industry ‘yes’ people around you.

The hate for musicals is overblown

There's a lot of people that just hate musicals on principle and that would be okay except they actually DON'T. I have friends that will preach at me how terrible musicals are (apparently it's a crime to use music to convey emotion and move the story along), but conveniently will watch almost anything Disney puts out.

Like the bulk of Disney movies (some 80 to 90%) are musicals. Every Disney princess movie save Brave and Raya and The Last Dragon are musicals. Even their most recent "live action" Lion King movie is a musical.

It also doesn't help that sometimes I will show them a musical (Nonsense) movie that they enjoy, but then they still go on to profess that they hate musicals. It's like saying that you hate anchovies but you love cesar salad.

I think what the general public actually hates being lied to about musicals and really bad adaptations. When the Joker 2 was announced people weren't expecting what had been a gritty drama in the first one to turn into a gritty drama musical with Lady Gaga in the second. As for shitty adaptations: Mean Girls the Musical would have probably had a better reception if the lead didn't have such a weak voice therefore forcing everyone else to dim their own vocal abilities.

Space movies without aliens are stupid

Space movies without aliens are like making a movie about running errands and having car trouble and then fixing the car and coming home, but in space. Or it's like making a movie about explorers who never meet anyone or even find any ruins. They just go into the woods and come back.

They're not worth watching. There's barely a story. Going somewhere and coming back is not a story.

The mypillows are terrible pillows

Back when I had these it was almost impossible to get comfortable. They’re way too bulky and big. I got a regular pillow and it made me realize how much better just a standard pillow is. They don’t fold at all so you pretty much can only sleep on your back. Don’t know why these things are popular

Zitz is a sequel to Calvin and Hobbes and I'm shocked that people haven't caught on to it

it all lines up almost perfectly

Jeremy is Calvin but more mature and less philosophical inclined but there are moments he gets really introspective when he wants to, before people say his name changed. I would answer back by saying that we don't know any of the characters last names in Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin name could just been changed over time. Calvin was just getting into rock music during the duration of the comic while Jeremy now embraces it which is a reasonable conclusion on this. he is also blonde and gets jokes from his freinds that he dress like it's the 80's.

Connie is not Calvin biological mother by any means but She is a child psychologist which would play into her being able to deal with calvin a lot better then mom from calvin and hobbes. Which would that a divorce happened during the time when the original calvin and hobbes comic strip run ended in 1995 and Zits starting in 1997 and also Jeremy originally was 15 and then was aged up to 17 in the later editions of the comic, so there is a 8-10 year gap between calvin age and jeremy age so a lot of things could of happen during that time. Connie is also very over-controlling. She consistently reads personal items in Jeremy's room, gets upset when Jeremy makes any hint of wanting more privacy, and wants to do everything for him. even though they can't like calvin parents

Walter is Calvin dad with his actual name like thier personality and tendencies are nearly identical except Walter Duncan doesn't use building character to bash jeremry over the head with like dad does with calvin. I know some folks are going to say well he is a orthodontist but I would the say the potiental divorice proberly effcted him a lot to the point he want to change career paths so he went back to school to become a dentist which was more natural to him then just sitting in the office 9-5 every weekday.

Hector is Moe, the bully who made calvin recess time a living hell or tried to atleast and relish beating him up. Then he mellowed out completely and made a apology about his past beahviour which lends to me thinking that moe was just a nickname that people gave him at the time and Jeremry forgive him and they become the best of friends while keeping a same type of look he had while he was younger with just shorter hair and glasses.

Sara is Susie Derkins but older. Sara Toomey is Jeremy's on-again/off-again girlfriend. Although Jeremy thinks the world of her, she apparently likes Jeremy a lot, but has thought of him as a "salvageable male". Her parents are divorced and her behavior wavers between kindness and aggravation. She and Jeremy have broken up many times, but they always seem to make up sooner or later. Which all of that lines up exactly how calvin and suzie frenemies type relationship was in Calvin and Hobbes and they also liked each other as evident in one of the valentine comic stripes but didn't admit to each other or anyone elses but now they are more conformable being a couple while older but still have the same type of up and down like they were younger.

So where is Hobbes in all of this and to that I would say that he is properly in the attic of Jeremy house as a reminder of how far he come but he has moved on and it's been a while which doesn't mean he doesn't daydream about hobbes but he isn't the sole focus or sole friend of his.

I know this theory is crazy and there is quite a few holes to explain but it's kinda crazy how most of it actually make linear sense as a story and narrative.

Juror #2 Sucks Spoiler

The movie Jorur #2 is terrible. The characters are two-dimensional and have simplistic motivations. The legal aspects of it are not probable in the least, but most importantly, the most important part of the plot is ridiculous.

J2 is an alcoholic who orders a drink at the bar, does not drink it, and then hits a girl walking drunkenly down the road in dark clothes at night and in a rainstorm. Due to his history of alcoholism and DUIs, the premise hinges on the idea that no one will believe he did not drink the beer and was sober when he hit the girl.

It does not matter if he drank the beer. When they trace him back to the bar and look up his bill, they cannot prove he had more than a single beer. I could chug a beer and still not blow above a .08. You expect us to believe that a single beer would impair an alcoholic. He also had no signs of falling off the wagon like erratic behavior or large outflows of money that would signify he drank the beer.

The guy could easily have turned himself in and said that the idiotic victim put herself in harm's way by her decisions. J2 probably could have sued her estate for emotional damage and repairs for his vehicle.

Oatmeal raisin cookies are better than chocolate chip

They just taste better. It’s respectable to prefer chocolate chip but people are treating oatmeal raisin cookies like they’re straight from a dumpster and idk why. Bonus: I think the raisins are the best part of the cookie

Edit: I should probably clarify that I also like chocolate chip cookies

Batman (2022) is a boring movie.

When this movie first came out both critics and audience were acting like this is groundbreaking batman film so I decide to give a shot but managed to find boring and to long. The batman detective thing is full of cliches. I genuinely think this is most overrated film of recent time.
