kids DESERVE way more respect than whats being given to them.

I so sick of kids not being allowed to have any boundaries. I'm so sick of videos of kids being humiliated posted online.

I recently saw a video of a kid's ipad being taken away from them all over tiktok. I'm not arguing against the ipad being taken away from them. What i am questioning is why the this sort of an interaction was being recorded and then posted all over the internet for everyone to see. I'm also irritated with people shoving a camera into kids faces and then not respecting the fact they don't want to be bothered or recorded. so they get mad at the kid for the kid being mad at them. It's like they were looking to produce a negative reaction out of the child and have every intention of humiliating or punishing them for having an attitude when thats what they wanted in the first place. some of these negative interactions with kids would not have occurred if just would have minded your business and stayed in your lane. if an animal is allowed to have boundaries, so do kids. know when to leave somebody alone, especially a child, if your not their parent/guardian then stop acting like you have authority over them. if you have that much of a concern then bring it up to their parent/guardian.

Drivers should be retested after they’ve been driving for years

There are many people who just suck at driving and it boils down to not knowing or not respecting the rules of the road. You get your drivers license at 16 or 17 and then expect people to not develop bad habits once they’ve been driving for over a decade.

If there were a mandatory lottery for retesting drivers I think the quality would improve and we would weed out the neglectful drivers that cause the majority of accidents. As well it’s proven that retesting qualified professionals helps them keep their skills and knowledge up to date at their jobs. The only real downside I can think of is the extra cost the Department of Motor Vehicles would incur because it would require more staff.

You would have done absolutely nothing for the Woman On Fire.

People on social media keep saying they would have done something for the woman on fire in the NYC subway. What? You carry a fire extinguisher? You gonna throw your iced coffee at her? Ruin your coat to smother the flames on a person who isn’t screaming or moving?

Also the bystander cops could have stumbled upon the scene and the fire department was likely alerted. Again, should they have thrown their nylon jacket on her to have it melt all over her wounds?

And to anyone who has never stayed in NYC…you clearly have no idea how quickly one gains the ethic of “do not intervene” for personal safety. One gets desensitized and “it’s not my problem” pretty quick.

Edit: The idea that I wouldn’t want to ruin my coat is just me being sardonic. I think anybody who saw the videos can see a coat would have done nothing at that point.

Edit2: So some people keep saying they would have done something. What SPECIFICALLY? Shouting for help qualifies as doing nothing.

Edit3: People keep thinking I wouldn’t have wanted to do something. If I could have helped her I would — but from what I saw in the videos unless I had a fire extinguisher in my arms at the time there would be nothing I could have done.

Nobody is more deserving of a home or apartment because they are "local".

I live in Maine and this mentality drives me crazy and I know it's like this everywhere.

Somebody posts how nice it is to live somewhere and people always shout something like "Yeah and stop moving here it's making it harder for the locals!"

So what? This is the U.S. where we have a right to move anywhere we want across state lines. You're not any more deserving of a home in town than someone from New York or Texas or whatever.

People move across the globe to give their kids a better life and people in the U.S. get mad when they have to move 20 minutes.

Rats don’t deserve the hate they get, the little cuties

Sure, they resemble cockroaches, the way the nest and breed and scurry around. What’s wrong with scavengers, honestly. Are we not scavengers ourselves, the way we scramble and scrounge to make a living and stay alive. It’s called the rat race for a reason. Yeah they were the perpetrators of the plague, but were you even alive then? You ever heard a rat squeak? It’s cute as fuck. They have close cousins who are revered as adorable pets, and yet you despise them because you are taught to. You are told to hate them. Don’t be a bootlicker.

“I don’t want to go, I just want to be invited” is extremely selfish logic

You hear this frequently, or you have that one friend who is famous for this. They don’t want to actually go to the party or go to the movies with a group of friends, but they want to be invited every time.

It’s basically “I don’t want to actually make the effort to meet you halfway in maintaining this friendship, but I want you to continue to put in effort to include me. It feels these days like we’ve taken the “you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, nobody is entitled to your time” logic and forgot the part of how friendships take effort and energy to maintain, and sometimes that includes showing up for people even when the lure of your comfort zone is calling.

Eventually, if you communicate with your actions that you don’t really want to do things with your social circle, they’ll just start to assume you don’t want to spend time with them and stop including you.

JK Rowling's naming isn't that bad

Padma Patel and Cho Chang are actual Indian and Chinese names, no problem there. Seamus blowing things up bc he's Irish is funny. The one I don't understand is the Kingsley Shacklebolt one(I don't get the connection maybe I'm just dumb)

Riddles are dumb because you can find a million answers that are technically right.

Every fucking riddle is built on the idea of “being clever” and “thinking outside the box,” but when you do actually answer the question with a legitimately correct answer, it pisses off the asker.

Riddles only work well in things like literature, where you can set up a premise that hints the guesser towards the right answer. You can come with anything in our vast world that fits the technical restrictions of the question, probably find a million different answers too. But your creativity in this regard does nothing but piss off the asker.

Chipotle is the worst fast food by a country mile.

It is honestly so bland and lacking completely in any flavor. I am not a huge fan of fast food in general but chipotle is honestly the most disappointing option and refuse to eat it even when its free. I legitimately don't understand who would ever bother eating here except for gym bros who can get their macros their.(which makes sense on the protein compared to other "fast" options). I feel like I am a crazy person thinking it is so bad, it seems everyone around me except my boyfriend all love it.

Leggings are not and never have been part of professional attire if worn without a skirt or dress over them

Upvotes

Especially in healthcare. People would wear leggings in place of pants all the time. It is not professional. Patients, other workers, family members, everyone gets to stare at you looking like you're basically naked. It's one thing if you are wearing them for warmth under a sweater, a dress, skirt, shorts, whatever, but on their own with the butt exposed? No.

Triple A Videogames should scale down

AAA games barely even release anymore. Each one takes 7 years to produce because it "has to be open world" with every buttcheek hair fully modelled.

I want to actually play new games on my ps5 before the whole console generation ends.

Make games linear again!

Stop with this open world bullshit.

I'll play God of War 3 before Assassin's Creed Valhalla any day because at least it's FOCUSED.

If you're a picky eater, you should re-try the food you don't like every couple years or less, especially if it's cooked into something.

When I was a kid, I hated most vegetables and a lot of other weird textures. I used to telly mom she liked stuff because she was old and her tastebuds were dead.

I didn't care for cheese until my late 20's.

I've always been willing to try things and as I've gotten older I guess my taste bud started dying because I like most everything now😜.

However, my wife on the other hand, won't try things because she had it when she was, like, nine and hasn't tried it since. She was the one who actually got me liking cheese.

Today I tried to get her to try some goat cheese in an egg burrito that I know she'd really like if she didn't know it was there.

People that hate small talk are just bad conversationalists

9.3k Upvotes

If you can't have an engaging conversation about things like the weather, how good the orange you just ate was or someone's new haircut, then 99% of the time a conversation about whether God is dead, the purpose of life or whatever you saw on your ayahuasca trip won't be that interesting either.

You should not speak to strangers (or really anyone) on airplanes

2.6k Upvotes

When you are boarding, it’s acceptable to let someone know you are sitting next to them, or perhaps say a simple hello. You should always treat others with courtesy, particularly the flight crew (eg, politely letting a seat mate know you need to use the restroom, placing a drink order). And it’s occasionally ok to strike up a conversation while deplaning as the other person is no longer trapped. Other than that, quietly keep to yourself.

The chances the person next to you just wants a moment to themselves is high. They had a long work trip. They are returning from a funeral. They are leaving school after finals. Even if they are relaxed, the chances they want to spend the flight speaking with a stranger who has a solid 50% chance of being insane is also low. No good can come of cornering someone in a tiny metal tube with no escape at 30,000 feet for multiple hours. It can only make someone feel trapped, desperate, and claustrophobic. And we’d all rather just listen to music, work, or watch a movie.

As a bonus, if you are flying with a friend or family member and yelling or speaking loudly you are also a monster. We are all trapped with you. Use your inside voice. No one wants you shouting about your life for three hours six inches from their head. Speak in hushed tones and politely.

There is no legitimate objection to r34 of cartoon characters NSFW

Upvotes

People always say “what if kids find it”? Well, what if kids find ISIS propaganda? What if kids find neo-Nazi hate speech? The Internet has billions of people on it and they won’t all agree on what is appropriate for a child, let alone what to do about that which they believe isn’t. The only solution is to keep kids away from the Internet altogether.

There’s a reason webforums say you have to be 13 or older to join. The Internet was never going to be kids’ stuff in the first place and any belief that it was is delusional.

Other objections I hear less often include:

A. “You’ll never look at these characters the same way again”! Is that a bad thing? What if someone with a Sonic avatar talks about the Iraq War? You’ll never look at Sonic the same way again. Should people with Sonic avatars be forbidden from discussing the Iraq War? What if it’s a web forum that retroactively appends their newest avatar to their old posts? Should they never be allowed to have a Sonic avatar until or unless those old posts are deleted?

B. “These characters were supposed to be innocent”! But that doesn’t mean they were supposed to be abstinent. In fact, the average person uses a real life college male’s avoidance of dating for fear of having to drop out to pay child support against them. Meanwhile r34 of fictitious couples who could afford a kid is still taboo. Isn’t that getting it backwards?

Better Call Saul is an infinitely better show than Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad is not a BAD show but it is a highly overrated show. (IMO)

The show follows a series of themes on repeat and each season simply feels like we're doing the previous season at a slightly bigger scale. It doesn't really evolve into anything beyond "teacher becomes drug lord and we better keep that a secret."

  • "Will they find out?"
  • "I'm not this kind of person. I just care about my family." (We know it's a lie)
  • "How badly can I compromise my morals this season?"
  • "Yeah, I did a horrible thing but I'm a really good person."
  • New season, new drug lord.

The problem with the character arcs is they aren't a surprise at the end of things. We always knew Walter White was a POS and we always knew Jesse was a regretful street rat who just wanted to find happiness.

Better Call Saul is a different beast entirely.

The show follows Saul who may be a POS but he's not evil incarnate. He actually cares about people and he doesn't want to see people get hurt. Part of the reason his life turns to shit is he keeps trying to make up for the things he did wrong. He's flawed but he's not an evil person.

He talks himself up. He lies. He cheats. He exaggerates...but he's just a lawyer. That's in his wheelhouse.

  • The show has unique and funny characters who build out the world in a more fulfilling way.
  • The character dynamics are WAYYY better and more fleshed out. His relationship to his brother and the evolution of that is done to perfection.\
  • We get to learn more about the backgrounds of characters from the original series (which in turn makes Breaking Bad a better show)

I feel like Breaking Bad's biggest flaw is you eventually stop rooting for Walter White.

When he's just a teacher with cancer, he's sympathetic and you want him to make his money and own his manhood because he has been walked all over and has something to prove to himself.

As the story goes on though, he's just...not worth rooting for. He keeps doing worse and worse things and it eventually results in him becoming an absolute dogshit human being. The show loses the "fun" that it was founded on and that's partly why it sucks by comparison.

Better Call Saul is the opposite.

We always end up rooting for Jimmy because even though he's a flawed person who makes mistakes, he has a heart of gold and he actually tries to do the right thing. He simply seeks to break as many rules as possible in order to do that right thing, hence his flaws.

alot of people are not opened minded as they claim

Upvotes

i have noticed this for a long time. They tend to be more opened minded until the idea does not benefit them or challenge their beliefs. I think alot of people only claim to be open minded to fit it. open minded dont mean you have to accept everything or agree but it does mean you are opened to seeing a different perspective. For example, if a person claimed to be opened minded to religion, but soon as a person says they dont believe in anything, their respond is, everyone believes in something. its just that alot of people preach acceptance but cant even accept anything outside of their circumference

Unlimited vacations (responsible vacations) is a terrible work benefit for many

My wife and son both have unlimited vacations for their work (not same company). They both brag about it as if it's a great benefit. My wife hasn't taken more than 10 days off in recent years because she thinks it will look bad (she previously got 4 weeks before the switch to unlimited). And when she does, she's still checking emails and attending meetings. My son, who's only been with the company for about 8 months, asked for 1 friday off recently and was grilled by his manager.... he was asked if he was on track to meet all deadlines and his manager reviewed the statuses of all his tasks before approving the day off. They both still like the idea of being able to take more if they need to. lol

I'd much rather know specifically how many paid days I get per year, and just use them up without having to worry about who's analyzing it. Incidentally, I'm self-employed so paid vacations is foreign to me altogether

Life in prison is a worse punishment than the death penalty

Most people see the death penalty as the worst possible punishment but I actually think life in prison is worse.

Prison isn't a place anyone wants to be so by giving someone a life sentence you're basically giving them the most amount of suffering you could legally give to someone. To be stuck knowing you'd never get out, never be free, that this is the all you'll experience until you die seems worse than just being killed. It seems like the death penalty with extra suffering.

Online multiplayer has ruined gaming and gamers

1.0k Upvotes

As a kid in the 80s and 90s, we’d play games after school and sometimes even a few times a week. Most of our time was spent outdoors with friends or during those rare gaming sessions with four people playing Goldeneye. Everyone understood that gaming was meant to be fun and a bit of a distraction. When parents called us for dinner, we’d jump out of the game without a fuss.

Nowadays, everyone believes they’re the next Twitch “star” or influencer who’s made gaming an integral part of their personality. They think everything they do is super competitive and can’t leave a game to eat or talk to someone. (Oh my gosh, they knew I joined a game! I can’t abandon my team because I won’t be able to upgrade my fake online experience, which has no real meaning in life!)

Gaming is supposed to be fun and a way to take a break. But the amount of meltdowns I see and hear about these days is concerning. It’s as if everyone thinks everything is competitive, even when it’s all just digital nonsense. Relax, folks! It’s just a game. It doesn’t matter at all. Take a break and speak to your family, friends, or partner for real.

I still enjoy gaming, but when it’s time to be with my kids or my wife, I log off because it doesn’t matter at all. Real connections do.

That’s why I miss local multiplayer gaming. It was the last real way to game together before social media took over and caused these drastic behavioral changes in gamers.

Expecting to be taken care of, by your children in old age, is selfish.

I come from a big family where it’s normal to expect your children to take care of you in old age. I am in my 30’s and I’m already thinking of how I will prepare myself for old age. I don’t want to burden my child with any issues when I’m old and can’t take care of myself. If they want to help out that would be a choice, NOT a requirement.

I’ve seen a lot of people my age who don’t save for retirement, are not focused on their kids and on top of that keep getting into debt. They “joke” that they’re not worried because their kids will be rich and take care of them.

NIL is ruining college sports and college athletes should not be paid

The fact that so many players are transferring to other schools just to get more money is ridiculous. There were 8 Miami Hurricane mens basketball players who transferred when the team was in the final four in 2023. That’s ridiculous and goes to show that a lot of the college athletes don’t care about loyalty or even if they’re playing for a good team, just that they can get a big payday. College athletes should not be making millions of dollars. Just today I saw that a college football player is being paid $8,000,000 and it’s ridiculous. That kind of money should be left for the pros.

We should bring back online spaces for tweens/younger teenagers

the "online kid mmo" games need to be back for tweens. That's the safest place for them. Its a shame that younger children/teens need to be on such mature websites/apps because there's literally no where for them to go.

Space movies without aliens are stupid

Space movies without aliens are like making a movie about running errands and having car trouble and then fixing the car and coming home, but in space. Or it's like making a movie about explorers who never meet anyone or even find any ruins. They just go into the woods and come back.

They're not worth watching. There's barely a story. Going somewhere and coming back is not a story.

The gambling industry should have legal protects for customers to protect them from spending too much money.

Before you comment, if you've never been to a casino before, please understand that the majority of customers are elderly, mentally unwell, low iq, and people vulnerable to addiction. The casinos exploit these people specifically.

If you've ever been in a casino, you'll notice tons of older people staring at the slot machines not moving, just spinning and spinning. These people are so addicted that casinos have to replace the seats regularly because people will deficate themselves but won't stop spinning the machines.

There should be consumer protections from luck based gambling like slot machines. Protections such as spending limits on the machines, where the machines get locked out if more then $50 is put in them per hour for example.

Just like how it's illegal to serve drunk people at bars, it should be illegal for a casino to let vulnerable people spend their life savings on slot machines.
