How do I know if a 6+ is a sidegrade or an upgrade?

If it changes some major fundamental aspect of the unit and how it would be used. Easiest example might be v2 law, 6* boost striker orbs while 6+ boosts cerebral orbs so you’d use them on totally different teams (other examples: v2g4/snakeman, v2 lucci, v2 boa). Some would argue that changing color and/or class qualifies them as a sidegrade because that makes them different but in my personal definition it wouldn’t qualify them because you wouldn’t change the teams they’re on completely (ex v1 croc, barto, robin, only exception I might agree with is Lucy because + is no longer be a good unit for carrot teams after super evolving).
