I start to realize the characters parallel to Joyboy's crew or allies are all not strawhats.

  • Lili/Vivi
  • Mermaid Princess/Shirahoshi
  • Kozuki family/Momo
  • Zou and Minks/Carrot
  • Shandian/Wiper
  • Robot/Kuma

The team-up of all these characters will symbolize the return of Joyboy. I think this explains why Oda avoided making some of them as official strawhats.

One of the undercurrents of all of One Piece but especially post-TS. Luffy has Hated Bad Guys™️ and Liked Good Guys™️ since day 1, but he wasn’t really pursuing any goal. Dude was on his adventure, throwing molotovs at asshole regimes, and making friends with the true citizens along the way.

Post-TS is noticeably more structured, partly thanks to Law and partly thanks to Luffy realizing that his own freedom is only worth as much as everyone else’s. For the former, Luffy strategically dismantled the worst crime syndicate in the New World and barely understood until he got to Dressrosa. From then onwards, he’s been actively (but still kinda stupidly) building his coalition.

This is a very generous interpretation because Luffy has monkey brains. However I think as readers we’re allowed to acknowledge the path Oda has drawn and its intentions even if Luffy doesn’t really have the brain cells necessary to be full-on pirate Ché
