Joyoby was from a sci fi country and the first pirate... theres multiple directions oda could take him from here, some of them being

  1. Joyboy was both a king and a pirate

  2. joyboy was closer to a revolutionary then a current op times pirate, and then his homeland got nuked via association

  3. joyboy was a former privileged noble of that kingdom who became a savior of the oppresed

and those are just some of the angles oda could tackle him from... god i love this story

Also, Oda has mentioned before that he's waiting to give a special pirate an eyepatch. This could be Joyboy, the first pirate.

Oh shit, that really sounds like he's waiting to give Luffy the eyepatch, meaning Luffy will lose an eye at some point.

That old scene of Luffy willing to put out his eye to become a pirate is Oda's longest ever act of foreskinning.

I didn't even THINK that it could be Luffy all along. Him saying "I'm itching to draw this character" could refer to him having a finalized design for Luffy with an eyepatch that he's had since the beginning, and he's been wanting to get to it so he can finally reveal this ultimate Luffy design that's been in his head forever
