Gotta love how they let Doffy keep his sunglasses even on the bottom floor of the sea lol

Didnt they break in Dressrosa, so they went and ordered him new ones lol

Like every classy villain with a strict clothing code, he probably has 50 spares hidden somewhere and at least one on him at all times. Can't commit crimes without style.

Jokes aside, Doffy was the only one that actually believed Vegapunk off the rip while other Celestial Dragons didn't. I hope we find out what and how he knows whatever he knows

261

u/Kirosh2 Lookout May 09 '24

First he knows about the Treasure of Marigeoise.

Then, he also has experience outside of Marygeoise, while also being smart, so he has no reason to ever doubt Vegapunk.

Other Celestial Dragons don't even seen aware of the Void Century.

Yeah, it was funny, but I guess he's trying to disconect it ala world goverment while trying to not damaging the main machine.
Now I'm wondering if the "science" that Saturn makes is like "man sees stick, man sees stone. Now man have hammer".

The initials "A&Mu" on the mother flame tank are a pun on the word "Atom"; in Japanese, you may read "&" as と ('to,' the word for and), making it "Atomu" (meaning "Atom").

I don't see any markings on his skin, he seems all healed up from Aokiji's Ice time capsule. Good for him but I was hoping for him to have suffered burns from frostbite and later be revealed as "the man marked by flames". Thus once Robin and Saul reunite on Elbaf we would have learned the location of the last Road Poneglyph. Oh well.

There was a comment I read that Vegapunk's den den mushi is hidden away in the giant robot. Which could make sense since Vegapunk was introduced with the giant robot, and he could've been hiding the den den mushi at that moment? There was also a panel in this chapter emphasizing its indestructability.

318

u/TheBiolizard May 09 '24

He was phased half into it, almost as if he was in the process of putting something inside it.

so are we finally going to learn about the void century?

933

u/Kirosh2 Lookout May 09 '24

Just a small part.

The full details, and everything erased will be for when the strawhat arrive to Laugh Tale.

783

u/PenisIsAVirtue May 09 '24

Roger laughed because the one piece is literally 1 piece of treasure, the only knicknack Joy Boy managed to scrounged up in his pirating because he is like Luffy.

Seems like this chapter also revealed that JoyBoy as we know him wasn't the same person as the Sun God Nika from Giant folklore? I don't think we knew that for certain until now since the giants have such long lifespans.

280

u/KNZFive May 09 '24

So now the lineage goes Sun God Nika -> Joy Boy -> Luffy as beings/people who had the Gum Gum Fruit power.

Maybe Nika is just folklore but Joy Boy somehow inherited his powers from a “fictional” being, which connects to Vegapunk saying that Devil Fruit powers come from things that people dream up.

159

u/mehmeh5 May 09 '24

I mean in general mythical zoans are from mythical creatures who may or may not exist. As far as we know there are no actual phoenixes or makamis in the OP world. Nika is no different

104

u/Wachitanga May 09 '24

Confirmed more than revealed.

It was a common headcanon that Joyboy had been the last user to awaken the Gomu Gomu before Luffy, which the Gorosei confirmed that happened during the void century.

The Sun God Nika itself was just the myth that gave birth to said fruit, as Vegapunk explained.

So with this chapter we finally have clarification on the whole "drowning world" thing and funnily enough it's Doffy that makes it clearer for us, not Vegapunk.

Doffy basically gave us a countdown for the destruction of most of the world: It's 5 meters or in other words, 5 uses of the weapon. We can expect to see it used 4 more times then, at least.

So that's a panel of a world noble who is asking about what the void century is?

So even the celestial dragons are possibly in the dark about the history? Is it literally JUST the Elder Planets and Imu to really know?

458

u/smcadam May 09 '24

Yeah that's a weird disconnect. The other World Nobles were mainly demanding that he be shut up, either because they know something, know it's bad for them, or are just being their usual asshole selves.

But again, like with Mjosgard, we see that the Nobles aren't a single monolithic group, there's enough brain cells for a shard of curiosity and humanity in some of them.

277

u/TheNorseCrow May 09 '24

Imagine you lived on an isolated island that teaches it's own, twisted, version of history but leaves out anything that doesn't interest them.

You'd step out into the world and be incredibly confused hearing about World War 2 and that was 78 years ago, not 800.

So it really isn't a stretch for the world nobles to not know that the void century even exists.

Either way, minds will be lost

The spoilers had me confused about Vegapunk’s first sin, but it makes more sense in context.

By trying to create an unlimited power source with the Mother Flame, his Mother Flame was then converted by the World Government into a weapon of mass destruction that could destroy the world and Vegapunk blames himself for everything it will destroy.

We've seen nearly every face around the world learning about this revolutionary message, except for one very important one: the Revolutionaries themselves. I believe they'll be the last faces we see at the end of the broadcast, as we learn they were the ones hosting the transponder snail this whole time, just as many have predicted. That phone call between Dragon and Shaka was about sending this transmission for them to host, and the Deadman's switch merely activated the transponder snail to start up the one the Revolutionary's have.

Headcanon: he was called joyboy but his name was Binks. Since he was the original pirate, he had an eyepatch

In Japanese, Vegapunk straight-up says "His name was Joyboy" (kare no na wa joiboi).

I partial towards another theory on Binks that I heard from Super Kamiki Kande (a Japanese YouTuber): What if "Binks" was not the name of a person but the name of the "Ancient Kingdom".

"Bink's Brew" refers to alchohol made in the their Kingdom. Pirates sing "Bink's brew" because the first pirate (Joyboy), who was from that kingdom, sand that song. And the reason why the Government doesn't want people to learn the name of the Kingdom is because it will give the pirates legitimacy.

Something that seems completely intentional is in Enel’s cover story when he’s looking at a mural, in the top left you can actually see the mother flame

That cover story is the absolute GOAT. So much can and will be conected to it as we learn new info. Oda has really dropped it all then but is slowly feeding us troughout the story so we can finally understand

I'd also like to reiterate something I saw once a while ago.

What else is on that mural?

A ship.

Sea creatures.

And the Mother Flame has 16 spots. And there were 16 lasers from the object that destroyed Lulusia.

That mural depicts Pluton, Poseidon, and possibly Uranus.

a ship to beat all ships a weapon to create more ocean a voice to control the monsters of the sea the ancient weapons are seriously authoritarian when combined together

This has already been said a million times already but man is Egghead shaping up to be one of the best arcs in One Piece.

And in regards to the lore and history of the world, this has become one of the most important arcs. It's still unreal to me that questions the community has had for so many years, that felt like the answers were so far away, are now finally being answered (to an extent) after so so many years.

u/FarInevitable4096 May 09 '24

We met vegapunk, we seen what happened to the books at ohara, kizura and the gorosie showed up, cp0 pulled up, the giants pulled up, huge lore dump, the overall cool technology of vegapunk, the robot, and hopefully atleast one of the vegapunks leave with the strawhats

Was the first pirate age erased from history?

That would make even more sense now as we know that Gol D. Roger restarted the great pirate age AFTER returning from laugh tale.

Joy Boy is a person and he was the 1st pirate. What made him set out to sea? I think this is telling us that Roger's and Luffy's dream is the same dream as Joy Boy.
Nika was a god and not a real person; DF are like dreams/wishes/desires; People dreamed of the power of Nika.
The Mother Flame was referenced as a "atom" and nuclear power
The Iron Giant would use the Mother Flame as a power source, but Vegapunk hasn't figured it out yet
The Iron Giant powers up when Luffy goes into G5; so I think this is linking together Nika and Mother Flame
The Mother Flame could have been the source of all Devil Fruits; DF 1st appeared in the OP world about 800ish years ago.
I think Nika and the Mother Flame are the same source.

We could always go somewhere high up

This line by Doffy sounds so ominous. He knows a lot due to him being a CD.

This has definitely happend before. Have the people of one piece world going higher and higher up due to floods throughout the history? Does that mean the islands in One piece world are actually the peaks of huge mountains? Kinda like in Wind waker.

So many questions and a lot of possible answers. Oda really Cooked this chapter.

Joyoby was from a sci fi country and the first pirate... theres multiple directions oda could take him from here, some of them being

  1. Joyboy was both a king and a pirate

  2. joyboy was closer to a revolutionary then a current op times pirate, and then his homeland got nuked via association

  3. joyboy was a former privileged noble of that kingdom who became a savior of the oppresed

and those are just some of the angles oda could tackle him from... god i love this story

u/Echleon May 09 '24

I’m almost certain Joyboy won’t be any kind of monarch. I expect him and Luffy to be pretty similar and it’s not something Luffy would do.

Shalria's line is extremely interesting because the immediate vibe I got from it was that CDs don't know about the "void century" because that's the name commoners have given to a period of history that is forbidden to THEM specifically.

Listen to Doflamingo right before this. He knows exactly how much flooding will be enough to spell the end of the world AND what the solution is (the high place is obviously the red line). He is a former dragon himself as we know.

These two panels together suggest that the CDs actually all just know what happened 800 years ago. That's why they're all mad that Vegapunk is spilling the beans

It feels like its been a long time since the last chapter...and Oda has not disappointed.

  • Akainu's face always reminds me of a young parent who's pissed they have to stay home while all their friends are out having fun because they had the kid too early.
  • Damn Oda is showing us EVERYBODY, hell yea.
  • Ma boi Doffy, always a pleasure to see him and love him seemingly ALWAYS knowing more than he's letting on.
  • Smoothie and Mont-D'or? Where the hell have they been?
  • Chopper/Brook/Usopp/Nami defending Robin against a freaking Gorosei is so......amazing.
  • So many questions about the Mother Flame. Fire in water?
  • Here me out here: Zunisha, Iron Giant, maybe they were part of Joy Boy's crew?
  • Seems pretty clear most Celestials dont even know about the Void Century, which makes sense.
  • So Joy Boy and Nika were not the same person but had similar powers...?

I dont even konw what to say, Oda cooked so hard in this chapter. Even Chouchou made an appearance turning this into a 50 out of 10 chapter. Oda break next week though.

So what are the odds that Luffy will be too busy trying in vain to hurt the Gorosei and won't pay attention to a word of the broadcast? I kind of love the idea that he will somehow manage to remain completely oblivious to the concept of both Joyboy and Nika for the entire series.

Also does anyone else get a bad feeling that with the Gorosei going into "KILL EVERYTHING' mode right now that we might get an unexpected major death before the end of this arc? The giants are carrying massive death flags rn.

We should all be very careful of TCB's phrasing in Vegapunk's latest sentence.

The original sentence この海で初めて海賊と呼ばれた男 just means "The first man to be called a pirate on these seas". There's nothing about being the first to go to the sea. Once again, everyone should wait for the official translation before going wild with theories.

They gave Chouchou a statute and a straw hat! It's such a tiny microcosm of this entire story. We're at chapter 1114 but here's a reference to chapter 12 when Luffy liberated a dog's treasure and saved a town from a tyrannical overlord. And then left the symbolism of the straw hat behind him!

It's such a tiny but beautiful reference to everything this story has been. As a lover of fantasy I don't know of another epic-length series where the main character and main theme has been so ridiculously consistent.

With how Oda is setting up the endgame and teasing more bits of the void century lore it’s becoming more evident to me that the story of Joyboy and his crew will be, more or less, the same story and experiences the Strawhats are going through, or at least very similar. With the star of each story being a goofy, fun, elastic stretchy guy!

That being said, I believe Joyboy is 100% the person with the eyepatch. Remember in Chapter 1, nearly page 1, we first meet Luffy with him proclaiming he’s tough enough to be a pirate and take to the seas with Shanks crew. To prove so, he attempts to stab his eye! This gives me no doubt, with the numerous amount of parallels in this series, that the introduction of Joyboy during the void century flashback will be him proclaiming he tough enough to take to the seas by stabbing his eye, successfully ;)
