Vegapunk is for sure dead and the message triggers on his death. The spread of Luffy becoming giant on command again is cool. The giant strawhat Imu has is most definitely Joy-Boy's.

u/Behanort Feb 22 '24

the final page just screams "if youre reading this, it means im already dead" to me

but, if hes not dead already, i expect an iconic character death next chapter

211

u/modimusmaximus The Revolutionary Army Feb 22 '24

I am sure Vegapunk made the message being sent when his heart stopped. I fear that's it for him.

17

u/kuisbright Feb 22 '24

But it can also play another way. His brain isn't in his body? Maybe he can still be revived, but the message was just a big middle finger to the government for trying to kill him.

12

u/Unabashable Feb 22 '24

That would be very Rick Sanchez of him.

6

u/willpower3309 Feb 23 '24

You can actually see a heart monitor in the room flatlining in that panel, so I think you're spot on

2

u/Unabashable Feb 22 '24

Well if so, it's a life well died, and hey some of the things he did while living weren't half bad neither.

688

u/ScoobySharky Feb 22 '24

There's a good chance he's already downloaded his conciousness onto the cloud, and while his body is dead, his conciousness isn't.

191

u/Anouchavan Church of Buggy Feb 22 '24

Yeah, I think you're right l!!

23

u/sack_of_potahtoes The Revolutionary Army Feb 22 '24

for all we know he might ended up becoming merged with that ancient robot

4

u/Anouchavan Church of Buggy Feb 22 '24

Although that'd be dope, I don't think it fits the character. Unless the robot is purely non-combatant I guess?

7

u/Unabashable Feb 22 '24

Well he does have a wrathful side to him too.

18

u/baroqueworks Feb 22 '24

That's a big theme of the arc, body death vs. conscienceness, and Vegapunk made the tech and already cloned himself multiple times. Deffo think that's on the table.

11

u/sinbe Feb 22 '24

If Apple Gramps main body dies, what happens to his satellites? They are part of the same person right. Can his satellites carry on his will and survive? Or will he just become a head on the sky?

4

u/tzomby1 Feb 23 '24

Well they work with the brain in punk records, and Hancock said that even if she died her power wouldn't disappear, so maybe the brain would still work and they would live.

8

u/echolog Feb 22 '24

Keep in mind we still haven't seen Vegapunk's brain. The 'Stella' body is probably meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Vegapunk is still very much 'conscious' within Punk Records.

4

u/Emptypiro Feb 22 '24

so instead of a recording he's saying this from inside punk records?

2

u/uraltugo9395 Feb 22 '24

That would be the Vegapunkest move Vegapunk could do !

2

u/Worthyness Feb 22 '24

Also the satellites are technically portions of him, so the primary body is dead, but his intelligence and information exist in them still. Whether or not that means they can "download" original vegapunk into a new robo body is a whole other thing. Like does his devil fruit now just get reborn? Or if Franky + Chopper + Satellites manage to keep his body warm and cyborg it up does he keep his fruit?

2

u/Saysnicethingz Feb 23 '24

Well I mean he still has all the other Stellas

1

u/StNowhere Feb 22 '24

I’m curious as to what they’re going to do with that. His body is dead but his brain is still alive and well in Punk Records.

1

u/Peddrawm Feb 22 '24

That’s actually a pretty cool theory ngl

1

u/Substantial_Lemon211 Feb 22 '24

another seraphim or pacifista might appear, that will now get Vega Punks conciousness as a back up plan. Maybe a robot of some sort ....

1

u/wololofololo Feb 23 '24

This was my theory after reading the spoilers but after reading the chapter it seems like the message is the sort that triggers upon his death.

1

u/tokyogodfather2 Feb 27 '24

Bro already split his consciousness into 6 other beings! What more does he need??

15

u/ch3333r Feb 22 '24

not only the message, Sanji said Vegapunk is smiling - it's all over for him

14

u/nomatt18 Feb 22 '24

Vega D Punk

2

u/leolegendario Feb 22 '24

It's Vegover.

13

u/Kirosh2 Lookout Feb 22 '24

You also have an heart monitor, that goes flat.

6

u/MasterMarci Void Month Survivor Feb 22 '24

I am actually 100% certain he's dead, you can see the monitor showing a flat line. With the start of the message

3

u/BanjoSpaceMan Feb 22 '24

It looks like the machines turned on because they were programmed to broadcast a message if he ever died?

2

u/UltimateToa Feb 22 '24

Looks like a heart monitor in the lab is flat lining in that panel so I think he's done for

1

u/diorthan Feb 22 '24

Hope not one of the two giant captains

1

u/VIPriley Feb 22 '24

I mean is vegapunk ever dead if his collective consciousness is in punk records. The Stella body may be dead but I'd argue if punk records keeps going he never dies. That said I wonder how the heart and mind are connected concerning devil fruit powers.

204

u/DrGrant_ Feb 22 '24

Exactly. The monitor in the last page also looks like an electrocardiogram. We can see a small pulse then the signal going completely dead. The message might trigger when his heart activity goes below a certain threshold.

61

u/philhendrie100 Feb 22 '24

15

u/DrGrant_ Feb 22 '24

I agree. It would be nice to check if these sound fx are usually used for this scenario.

6

u/philhendrie100 Feb 22 '24

That would take some serious research but I bet there is a panel out there in the past.

22

u/Reappeared Feb 22 '24

First thing I noticed was vegapunks waveform going into asystole.

7

u/haLOLguy Thriller Bark Victim's Association Feb 22 '24

This is true!

3

u/Tenshii_9 Feb 22 '24

Maybe he just has a slow heart rate? :D

Kidding! Tho the monitor is kinda zoomed in if the pulses are shown that big compared to the full line on the monitor. Usually such a monitor shows a line that represents a longer time & higher number of pulses to make it possible/easier to see a pattern and changes.

3

u/Blackmanwdaplan Feb 23 '24

Goes with the theme of heartbeats

2

u/wololofololo Feb 23 '24

It seems like you're right! That means that he might not actually have died. Somebody get an AED now!

415

u/Gubrach Feb 22 '24

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing regarding Vegapunk. That, and Sanji saying "why are you smiling" is making me think Vegapunk is going to say he's a D. in the process. Although it doesn't really matter if he is or isn't.

267

u/FringGustavo0204 Feb 22 '24

My full name is Vega D. Punk

243

u/navjam Feb 22 '24

D. Octer Vegapunk

21

u/mr_chub Void Month Survivor Feb 22 '24

That's exactly some shit Oda would pull lol

5

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '24

Im lowkey expecting it now lmao

4

u/TheBiolizard Feb 22 '24

I really want it to be this!

5

u/LogicThievery Feb 22 '24

This Punk is (D)aft

1

u/WillBlaze Feb 23 '24

thats actually a fucking badass sounding name

60

u/ShellyT98 Thriller Bark Victim's Association Feb 22 '24 edited Feb 22 '24

Exactly. D. is just a name you give yourself, it's not really a family, to me is the symbol of the people who opposed the thing that now is the world gov. And the lily discussion is to me proof enough

Edit: to the ones that are correcting me I want to say: this is my opinion, not the truth I may be wrong. However "family" in One Piece is not exactly a blood bond right? The mugi are a family, but no one is blood related.

Also I do not belive that 800 years ago ruled a person over a great sandy kingdom with the letter D and NO ONE in the world knew, so much so that it comes as a surprise to Imu himself (themself?) and also Lily's brother didn't know or just hid it? I don't know to me the idea is that the D is for a found family bond more than a blood bond.

But again I could be proven wrong in 5 years or so

13

u/ostriike Feb 22 '24

no D is a family name, it has been stated so and it would make zero sense if people just gave themselves the name since it is passed on.

2

u/Unabashable Feb 22 '24

Yes it is a family name. A literal representation of Inherited Will. That's not to say that same will can't be Adopted either though.

2

u/RPG217 Feb 22 '24

It's basically what people have been theorizing since the "Sa D. Bo" scene (aka sad boy lol).

2

u/Substantial_Lemon211 Feb 22 '24

in chapter 763, Law explains his name to baby 5: "the D is an alias, and water is my secret name. For generations my family has..."

It might have been a symbol an alliance added to their name as a sign or ressitance 800 years ago, but i think the will of D is passed down, not acquired.

But who knows, VP learning about the past, might know the meaning of the D too and could claim the alliance for himself as well :)

3

u/Emptypiro Feb 22 '24

we have factual evidence that says it is a family name

1

u/Tasty-Ad5368 Feb 22 '24

Monkey D Garp????

3

u/ecbp04 Feb 22 '24

Vegapunk D. Most Humble Genius

3

u/RookJameson Feb 22 '24

I think Kizaru cauterized Vegapunks wound so he doesn't bleed out. The smiling is because he relized that in the end Kizaro is still his friend.

115

u/Dankoregio Feb 22 '24

while I agree it seems like a dying message, he also did explicitly state he would die "from internal bleeding" if he was moved, and as he was about to be moved kizaru conveniently shot a laser at the spot that could have cauterized the wound.

I know it's a far shot but I could see the manga logic coming through

22

u/oklilpup Feb 22 '24

Considering we just recently saw Aokiji do the same to Garp I can see it happening. Or maybe this will show the difference between the two admirals.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '24

Yeah I thought that too. I’m assuming VP isn’t quite dead yet.

10

u/Worthyness Feb 22 '24

They have a doctor, a cyborg, and multiple satellites of the smartest person on the planet. They'd at minimum be able to stabilize him if they can get him to the ship

7

u/bfiiitz Feb 22 '24

They also have a room of replacement organs for vegapunk

2

u/Rockettmang44 Feb 22 '24

Yea I feel like his death is a red herring, I think I used that term correctly. It just seems wayyy too sudden, but hey look at me actually hoping oda DOESNT kill somebody. It's just that his satellites seem kinda pointless with out him, unless if he backed up his consciousness. Also like you said there are so many people there that are qualified to save him.

3

u/Crispyfever Feb 23 '24

It does seem weird that he had that dramatic panel of him getting stabbed saying "there would be no mercy" for his betrayal and here its a small panel and him making a "ah!" sound.

Odd choice for that to be his killing blow.

1

u/LaiqTheMaia Feb 23 '24

Bro did you see how big the hole was that kizaru shot through him, that ain't cauterising a wound that's blasting a whole part of his body out,

2

u/Dankoregio Feb 23 '24

that's why I said manga logic. People have been getting pierced by lasers that big in this manga ever since kizaru debuted basically and nobody's died to them yet so

1

u/LaiqTheMaia Feb 23 '24

That's true but i don't see something like that helping him stay alive rather than adding to his death

14

u/shiba-on-parade Feb 22 '24

i said this in the spoiler thread. but i'm even more convinced now because looking at the HQ scan-- you can see the vital sign flat line on the screen adjacent to Vega Punk. He's dead.

4

u/Ur-Than Feb 22 '24

Well seen !

6

u/Marliix Feb 22 '24

In Elbaf we need Luffy chilling casually with the giants while being giant Luffy.

59

u/MomonCemomon Feb 22 '24

No, Kizaru cauterized his wound that he got from Saturn.

61

u/Jlivw Feb 22 '24

I thought about this too, its possible but he said that if he moved he would die. Then again this is Oda we are talking about and Pell tanked a nuke lmaoo

16

u/National-Yak-4772 Feb 22 '24

The last 2 panels show his heartbeat stopped and the message was a pre-recording

7

u/amgine123 Feb 22 '24

Pell is Zoan so I might think they have the means to tank and survive due to their durability.

13

u/AmulyaG Feb 22 '24

Sure mate. Kizaru is also about to betray Saturn any moment now........

-2

u/MomonCemomon Feb 22 '24

He is! Do you really think Luffy would be able to capture both him and Saturn as easy as that if he put some effort to fight back?

4

u/ohetsar Feb 22 '24

there is literally a heart beat monitor, showing his heart stopped and the message is triggered right after.

he is dead

5

u/slowcro Pirate Feb 22 '24

I’m curious what happens to the other vegapunks and punk records if the main vegapunk dies

3

u/AndAgainIForgotMyP Feb 22 '24

Yeah looked like a dead man's switch.

2

u/Neyubin Explorer Feb 22 '24

I agree with this, but I also feel like Kizaru specifically cauterized the hole from Saturn. VP was talking about the hemorrhaging, and then Kizaru shoots him exactly through that wound?

1

u/aworldbreaker The Revolutionary Army Feb 22 '24

I don't get this logic. When you cauterize a wound, you don't send a stream of fire through. You apply heat to seal off blood vessels. That isnt going to fix internal damage. If anything, it would just scorch his organs. A flaming sword of light going through your gut is still a flaming sword of light going through your gut.

Why would this work to stabilize something?

1

u/Neyubin Explorer Feb 22 '24

Well you see, unlike us, these are characters in a fictional world. Applying real world logic is like saying "Zoro would break his neck if he tried to lift weights that big with his jaw".

2

u/domoroko Scholars of Ohara Feb 22 '24 edited Feb 22 '24

Joyboy was certainly a giant, more like the Jotunn, ‘Surtur’, from norse mythos- causing ragnarok when he’s finally reunited with his crown. (The straw hat) The world snake known as the redline stops biting its own tail- This is a common theme in Norse Mythos ‘an enemy of the gods is bound but destined to break free at Ragnarok.’

I believe Dragon is based on Njord, the god of wind & the sea and its riches. Dragon is based on the Wind part- I don’t see him wanting riches. Also there’s a legendary ship called Skíðblaðnir, which could fly through wind powers. I think this is how the revolutionaries can sail places so quickly, from Dragon’s wind powers. Not only that, there’s two main groups of gods in Norse Mythology. Aesir and Vanir, war and peace.

If Gol D. Roger is based on Odin, Portgas D. Rouge was based off of Frigg. Ace is based on Baldr, their Son, who’s tragic death is the catalyst for Ragnarok.

There is so much in One Piece that can be tied to and theorised within Norse Mythology.

2

u/zeta3d The Revolutionary Army Feb 22 '24

there is a monitor in the last panels with Vegapunk's vitals on it going flat :(

2

u/StanfordFox Feb 22 '24

Not to mention Sanji saying "What are you smiling about?"

Its not uncommon for sympathetic characters (usually D members) to smile at their death. That could be a hint too.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '24

[deleted]

1

u/philhendrie100 Feb 22 '24

I mean, there are the satellites, but its not looking good for the Stella if this monitor is any indication.

2

u/thefoodiedentist Feb 22 '24

Imma cope and say kizaru shot him w laser on purpose to cauterize the hole made by Saturn to keep him alive.

1

u/Cntrl_shftr Feb 22 '24

Luffy's hat seemed to remain small in that last panel. You can see it on his back. Wonder why it didn't grow with luffy's clothes?

1

u/Janiverse_Stalice Feb 22 '24

Wasn't there also a heart monitor that went to flatline? He is dead for now. Like dead dead

1

u/MonkeyDlurker Pirate Feb 22 '24

not necessarily, if joyboy had the same powers, he can shapeshift too so joyoboys original size doesnt matter.

Also why is a straw hat important... ?

1

u/ThePandaRider Feb 22 '24

Vegapunk shouldn't die when the Stella body dies. Stella seems to be just a body with a receiver. Vegapunk's brain is the core of Punk Records and he should be alive as long as long as Punk Records are fine.

1

u/Murasasme Feb 22 '24

My wild copium. Kizaru shot him in the hole made by Saturn, cauterizing his wounds, which is why he was smiling. I know it's wild, but Vegapunk made it a point to say he was going to bleed out, and Kizaru got him exactly in the hole he already had

(I gave up on Kizaru being good a long time ago, but the copium is too strong this week)

1

u/T_alsomeGames Scholars of Ohara Feb 22 '24

I don't think Vega punk is dead. I think Kizaru cauterized the hole that was left there by the grand elder.

1

u/Kass-3582 Feb 22 '24

Am I the only one thinking that Kizaru with his high beam saved Vegapunk? Like he stopped the bleeding in an unconventional way? Dunno

1

u/CountCocofang Feb 22 '24

No, Kizaru fiction-cauterized the wound to stop the bleeding so Vegapunk could survive. That's why we get a panel of him looking somewhat panicked after the shot. Because he is playing a risky game of attempting to appear as if he is doing his job but actually helping Vegapunk get out of this somehow.

1

u/joyboi-37 Pirate Feb 22 '24

I wonder exactly who can hear the message. Is it just people in the vicinity of the island? Is it somehow being broadcast worldwide?

Maybe we’re going to learn about the void century next week 👀

1

u/Heistdur Feb 22 '24

There’s a heart monitor that flatlines before the message starts. He’s definitely dead

1

u/DeliciousAward5397 Feb 22 '24

I wondered whether Kizaru is disinfecting Vegapunks wound? Saturn's claws are poisonous, afterall .

1

u/2Punx2Furious Feb 22 '24

I'm thinking that just the Stella is dead, but his main brain and satellites still work.

1

u/Ranjith_Unchained Feb 23 '24

There's a heart rate monitor going flat as well, Vegapunk is gone

1

u/ChirpingReynard Feb 23 '24

"The giant strawhat Imu has is most definitely Joy-Boy's."

This is such a great connection and take. Haha, and you've just got this buried at the end of your comment. This is so the case. They even make a point to show the nape of his neck with the regular sized hat central in frame. Just image how giant nika luffy would look with the giant hat to scale.

1

u/Etonet Feb 23 '24

Nah Kizaru cauterized his wound... maybe

1

u/Slammybutt Feb 23 '24

Or, he activated something and Kizaru's attack cauterized the wound so Sanji could move him. He probably still dies, but not quite yet .

1

u/Gearvulcan Feb 24 '24

So then why does the straw hat remain small? There's a beep sound, he activated it before dying.

1

u/tokyogodfather2 Feb 27 '24

Can’t wait until the Giants run into Giant Luffy. No doubt they will arrive just in time to help with Final Mode Saturn
