We officially see Dorry and Brogy in chapter 116 and we finally see them (almost) with Luffy again in 1106!
AND THEY CALLED LUFFY THE SUN GOD!

Since Giants have the longest lifespans in the world of One Piece (as far as we know), it makes sense they would know some stuff about Nika

No living giant is as old as the void century, but its possible the oldest giants grandfathers were alive during it if they were equally long lived, but the giants worship a sun god we know this from big moms backstory, that whole fasting period (that drove big moms first tantrum) the giants take part in is a festival for the sun god.

As a historian, the concept of ‘living memory of living memory’ is very important to how a society views a period of history. If there are people alive today who have interacted at some point in their life with someone who experienced an event, it feels far more relevant to our culture. That’s one of the reasons why, for example, WWI feels far more relevant to us, as there are plenty of people still alive now who knew someone who fought in it, even if all those who fought in it are now dead. The void century is far closer to ‘living memory of living memory’ with the giants than it is for other beings in One Piece.

Merfolk too, right?

1

u/jaypenn3 Feb 02 '24

merfolk don't live any longer than humans

1

u/EnvironmentalTotal21 Feb 03 '24

There was some fiction where some species lived hundreds of years but i don’t remember if it was one piece

Maybe i’m thinking or say irl like the greenland shark. has oda actually said the pifespan stuff?

5

u/madkillller Feb 02 '24

Do you have any scientific papers about that?

...Not that I doubt you in any way, I would like to cite it.

Sadly nothing to hand without going on JStor - it was a concept brought up back during my BA!

Luffy being the reincarnation of a god that has a festival based around fasting is in-universe satire.

u/RiceOnTheRun Feb 01 '24

Why do you think they’re fasting? Luffy ate all the food!

He ain’t no hero after all…

If someone’s even 2 generations down they’ll be aware of certain knowledge. My great grandparents down to my parents now were involved in Soviet resistance I make sure to pass down certain history the books don’t teach to make sure such a thing never happens again and they don’t become one of those people easy life in America forgetting the history that got them here. I’m sure something as serious as the void century they pass down and they’re a pretty isolated island

OP also takes place during the time of oral history being the main method of passing down history to future generations. It would make sense that they’d have heard some stories.

and thats why the world government has this erase everything mentality

I’m guessing giants were just too strong to fuck with, wonder why they didn’t get genocided like Lunarians and Kumas race who were decidedly much stronger genetically it seems. Guessing the weapon that took them out ran out of gas before they got to Elbaf wonder if we learn anything about that

u/Roskal Black Leg Sanji Feb 01 '24

the oldest giants were only in their 300s in big mum's flashback so probably a few more generations.

1

u/Cum_Dad Feb 01 '24

I wonder how stoked on, Big Moms defeat, the giants were.

I wonder if that will come up

8

u/popop143 Feb 01 '24

Also, Sun God might be relevant in Giants mythology. I’m reminded about the gigantic shadow Luffy had after Skypeia.

3

u/sunkenrocks Feb 01 '24

No he is, it was in big moms flashback. They worship the sun god.

3

u/of_kilter Cipher Pol Feb 01 '24

Or shanks told them

3

u/Binkusu Feb 01 '24

I imagine they have warrior stories passes down generation to generation. And since they're one of the strongest forces in the OP world, I don't think there's a lot the WG can do.

Even Big Mom couldn't force them to join her.

Zunisha go brr

2

u/The420Roll Feb 01 '24

Right but Zunisha isnt a species of multiple giant elephants tho. And if they were, no way they all still alive lol

3

u/Andrejosue98 Feb 01 '24

Zunisha is part of the species Naitame-Norida elephant and are know for their life longspan that can go up to a thousand years.

1

u/writer-sci-enter Feb 01 '24

I wonder if the mistake that Zunisha did ended up as the reason for the extinction of Zunisha’s species of elephants.

u/someone2795 Captain Crackhead Feb 01 '24

Giants have a 300 year old lifespan

1

u/The420Roll Feb 01 '24

So giants in the generation of Dorry and Brogy's great-grandparents could possibly been alive during the void century.

Not impossible for them to know stuff 3/4 generations back

1

u/ForestJordie Feb 01 '24

That and they are housing Saul and are also friends with Shanks who both probably know a thing or two about the void century
