Gear 5 is a callback to the original appearance of super saiyan. A huge new prophesied power, but at the cost that the user isn't quite the same. Goku becomes more stoic, serious, and violent; Luffy becomes manic, laughing even as his friends are in danger and his allies drop around him.

It reminds me of the Smile fruit victims. I wonder if Oda has a philosophical point to make, or if there is some kind of connection.

It would be awesome if the Smile victims get some kind of subsidiary Nika power in the final battle and join the Grand Fleet.

Jupp. That's the only real problem I've got with G5; Luffy no longer seems to be reacting to events around him in an organic way.

That's one of the things that I love about it, I'm committed in my belief that something is deeply wrong with that form and that will have consequences. He literally started laughing hysterically after remembering everyone who was hurt or even killed by Kaido

Yep example being the Impel down Zoans. I think Luffy hasn't fully mastered the form.

Lucchi and Kaku besides being beaten up wasn't shown or implied to have suffered from using their awakened forms.

OK, but imagine how cold it will be if Gear 5 luffy sees some tragedy and doesn't laugh. It's already amazing when normally happy Luffy gets serious, but permanently happy gear 5 Luffy getting serious would be peak.

Apologies, it wasn't by Kaido it was more Big Mom's side of things. He remembers Pedro's sacrifice in his little monologue. "Isn't that right, Momo, Tama, Kin'emon, Pedro!!"

It's been said that the user of a zoan has to fight against the fruit when eating it. The Impel Down jailers have been taken over by the nature of their zoans. I believe that while Luffy has won the fight with his fruits nature, he is still overtaken by the laughter and overall joy associated with it. Might be one of the reasons Joyboy earned their name.
