I am not Irish here on visa So I graduated this September in software. I have been looking for jobs in software but there aren't much. I started looking for non software jobs but didn't had a visa long enough my visa arrived a month ago now I can work in any industry for couple of years. The problem is I am running out of savings and If I go home my family will marry me off to a woman which I don't want as I am gay. I am open to any job atm but I keep getting rejected when I asked one of the retail stores they said they know once I get a software job I will leave. So I am currently stuck I can't get a job in software and other don't want to hire me in Dublin. Any suggestions what I can do?

Queer and safe housing ?

Hi !
I'm moving to Dublin on january 7th for an erasmus exchange program. And here's the thing:

I'm an amab non-binary person and I don't feel safe around cis men. I've been sexually aggressed and beaten up multiple times. I was hoping to find at least a studio apartment, or a room in a flat with other queer people.

I've been looking in daft.ie, multiple facebook groups, and specially on Queer Housing Dublin. But I haven't found any options :( I wouldn't mind living alone in a small studio but even that it's so difficult with 800€, which for Dublin apparently it's a super tight budget.

Could I ask for your help, please ?

see you !

(Also, I'd love to meet people in Dublin once I get there :) )

Moving to Edinburgh soon!

Hi!!! I hope to move to Edinburgh around June/July 2025 and wondered if any Cork LGBTQ+ people are in a similar situation. I'd also love some queer friends to vent and hang with in Cork! I'm moving by myself but a friendly face to move with is a welcome idea. A bit about me, 21, queer, she/her, final year Arts in UCC. I love crafting, reading, and playing sims and lego.

friends?

Hiya everyone, I (21 M) have been living in D12 for 2 years now. I moved from a different county so didn’t really know anybody here besides my boyfriend, who has made it a little difficult for me to meet new people. I’ve been out of work for the past year (if anyones place of work is hiring PLEASE let me know 😭) and my boyfriend doesn’t do much with me so i’m basically desperate for a reason to leave the house before I go insane. I play the PS5, listen to all sorts of music, enjoy a good coffee (prefer a pint tho) and i don’t know what else to say :)

Mother

Hi Folks, just a quick question for fans of Mother. I went for the first time in ages. For those who don't know, it's located down the lane off Grafton St.

Door staff and bar staff were lovely, had a great night.

The issue was the amount of pickpocketing (or attempted) pickpoketing going on. Two or three times during the night, I felt people trying to figure out which pocket my phone/wallet was in. There was a small gang, maybe four or five people, both guys and girls chriss crossing the main floor in what seemed like a coordinated effort to lift phones and any loose money in pockets.

I also saw someone with a card reader (one of those tiny stripe boxes), not sure if they were trying to scan cards or what the story was with it.

There was also an attempt to spike my drink, someone dropped something into my drink as they squeezed past me.

Apart from report them to bouncers, what do ppl do? Confront them? Warn friends? They seemed to be operate without any fear of being caught.

Hesitant to go back to Mother after last Sat night.

Queer books swap

I currently have a few queer books that I read and don't plan to re-read. Is anyone interested in book swapping? I would prefer to swap them for other books by queer authors, or focused on queer characters/themes.

Right now I only have YA ones to offer:

Two Boys Kissing, by Levithan, David

The Lesbiana's Guide To Catholic School, by Reyes, Sonora

Felix Ever After, by Callender, Kacen

Leah on the Offbeat, by Albertalli, Becky

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

I live in Dublin and I could swap in person, or post the books, but only inside of Ireland.

Grindr’s Unwrapped 2024 reveals Ireland has the 2nd highest number of Fem Tops. Is that accurate?🤔

Others stats include that the most searched tag is ‘hung’ and that South Korea has the highest amount of open relationships!

What did you make of their 2024 summary?

Something hopeful

I (32M) find much of the discussion about gay men to be negative and only regarding our problems. There’s very few positive topics of conversation. Perhaps that’s also true for the wider LGBT+ community also.

There are many posts about how lonely gay men are and how Grindr (and apps generally) can frustrate people’s desire for meaningful connections. Living an hour outside Dublin myself, it also seems options are very limited unless you’re a city dwelling gay.

For me: I only came out to family recently, and in difficult circumstances. Meeting other gay men, as friends or more, is a challenge. I’m a little baffled by the out and proud gays who don’t hide or hold back - I don’t have that confidence. Being a gay teen and closet case for my twenties was a sad and lonely place, an experience that cast a long shadow.

I’m wondering about the positive experiences though, and how I and others can leave all that behind.

How have you grown in confidence as a gay/bi/lgbt person and what experiences made for that? At what point could you make peace with and move on from your (typically difficult) teenage years? How have connections with other gay/lgbt people aided that? For those who came out later, how have you 'caught up'?

Love in the country lesbian comes to Waterford!

I hope this is ok, I know nobody likes ads but this is more a PSA for Gee lovers in the South East.

The Wild Geeze are playing Waterford on the 13th of December in a church and it's going to be sexy and sacrilegious!

The Wild Geeze are Breda Larkin (the lesbian off of RTE2) and Laura Lavelle (the sexy burlesque witch) and they will be joined by special guest Bonnie Boux (also a sexy burlesque witch but from Waterford)

Please come out and support queer cabaret and kick off your Christmas celebrations (there's also an emo club night on afterwards in town if you're into that short of thing)

Boilerhouse

Hey has anyone here been to the boilerhouse? I am wondering the age profile who go there on Friday night as I have heard it is all older men and as a younger man (under 25) I would prefer a younger crowd.

Loneliness

So I'd posted a few months ago about my girlfriend being out of the country for a while.

As a TL;DR, live in the North where it's very hostile towards trans people but I'm not able to access LGBTQ+ community spaces because of an abusive ex partner who is not only popular within what is a very small community, but is also friends with people who work for and run various groups.

Further, online only options like Discord don't ever seem to fill in the gap because people honestly just wanna shitpost and share memes. Haven't made an online friend in years and not for a lack of trying.

So am in limbo. Combination of being excluded from the NI LGBTQ side of things and being excluded from the Non-LGBTQ side of things I've tried for being a trans woman in a part of the world where 9/10 people you run into are nasty towards you.

Wasn't able to find a fix the last time. Girlfriend has since come back but I'm worried about codependency as I know it's not healthy, but it's also kinda inevitable when you only have one person.

Can’t move out of NI for a good while so what can I do?

Russian transitioning in Ireland NSFW

Hi!

Well, the head of this post is pretty self explained, but still I’ll describe the situation VERY thoroughly for those who stumbled upon this thread. Also, sorry for any grammatical mistakes in advance — I’m sick as hell and kinda emotional right now.

So, here the story goes. FTM, 23 years old with a degree in pharmacy and, as you could’ve guessed, I’m Russian. And me being trans is a ‘minor’ inconvenience for the government of the country: I’m not allowed to change my documents nor I can legally access my HRT treatment. In fact, I’m kinda close to be forced into correction therapy for my gender identity.

Obviously, I can’t continue living in my country of origin and I’ve decided to try and apply for the student visa in Ireland. From my perspective it’s a perfect fit, considering my degree and passion for pharmacy in general. If someone will ask — yes, I know about many refugee programs, but to participate in them I need at least physically be in Ireland. Plus, I guess here comes my “Russian”mentality. I can’t imagine how some other country would, you know, stand up for me just being queer???

But I genuinely hope that the government of Ireland would do that if I’ll be beneficial in the sense of the economy as a working force. Well, at least I think so (AND if someone here is thinking of this otherwise or they are sure that I’m living in dreamland with this statement, then I’m willing to listen).

And here we come to the title of this thread: if I’d be able to successfully apply for some master program in Ireland, what should I do next to achieve my transition? As far as I know I can’t do anything as a non citizen.

If you know anything about this, could you please share with me? It would be a major help with planning my future further.

Fixed: Survey on LGBTQ+ Irish life

I've deleted a previous post with a different version of the survey but with the help of some of you nice folks I've adjusted it to include elements that should hopefully ease some nerves and show my purpose in conducting this research and the context behind what I'm doing. This is voluntary! You aren't being forced to read this or complete the survey but please know this will be submitted to a publication which means you would be directly enabling potentially important research that has yet to be fully done for a better understanding on LGBTQ+ people in rural Ireland and how to improve attitudes. Thank you!

Survey on LGBTQ+ life in Ireland

Hello! I'm an undergraduate student in Nebraska currently writing a research paper concerning LGBTQ+ life in Ireland and how cultural geography plays a role in this, especially in rural areas.

If you're interested, I wrote a post asking for interviewees, but for ease of analysis I figured a survey would suffice in combination with that method. The link is here (just a simple google form as I'm locked out of qualtrics): https://forms.gle/WqL4nhhozRL37cBR9

Thank you!

American hoping to immigrate to Ireland

Aloha all!! My names Gray I'm a 57 year old gay American hoping to Immigrate to Ireland as soon as possible. The election has pushed me into a lifelong dream of moving to Ireland. Sadly I am one generation away from obtaining citizenship. I am hoping for advice on how to accomplish the move. And what cities to consider. I have just sold my home on the big island of Hawaii so I should be able to purchase a small Place and hopefully find meaningful employment. America is no longer a safe place for our people! So please be kind and advise me and anything and everything I might need to know. Any help will be eternally appreciated. Thank you

Difficulty making friends

Hi all, I'm 22, he/they, and moved to Dublin from the UK for a graduate job last year.

I've been having a hard time getting used to living in Dublin as I've not made many friends (whether queer or not). I'm aware there are a few events but every time I tell myself that I'll go to them, I end up not going.

It's partially the anxiety of being in a room where I don't know anyone, and partially because work is a bit out of the way from the centre, meaning I'm too exhausted after work.

Is this a common experience for others? And if so, how do you deal with it/make friends?
