Pardon the booze. I have to keep the flames away from little fingers.

My first candle went out, then I somehow put out my shamash trying to relight it, then I almost burned myself relighting my shamash 😭

happy chanukah! that menora is gorgeous btw! i assume it's designed to be branches, but it also reminds me a bit of a stag's antlers - really cool!

Happy Hannukah! Love the Lowry, I lived near Salford for many years and it's still something like Lowry would have recognised.

happy chrismukah! my housemate and i both have one jewish parent and one christian parent, so we celebrate both (at her parents’ place this year). super special year given the first night of chanukah is on christmas day :)
(we realized we got the placement of the first candle wrong immediately after i took this photo and corrected it!)

u/Ok-Average3876 1d ago
Heck yeah! Your menorah looks so great! We do both in our house too. Don't let anyone police your candle placement btw, there're as many ways to be a Jew as there are Jews and that includes how you light your candles ❤️

actually i really like learning the “correct” way to do things. i don’t follow halacha to a T by any means but i do like practicing the traditional way when i can, it makes me feel spiritually connected to judaism as a whole.

Your chanukiah is so gorgeous - is this an heirloom?

a friend gave it to me - she found it at a vintage store! it says it was made in 1950 in israel. i wonder what the story behind it is!

can people please learn the proper placement of the lights? it's right to left, not left to right, and not starting in the middle. on each subsequent night, a new light is placed to the left of the first light. lighting goes from left to right, starting from the newest light to the oldest. this is straight from the Shulhan Arukh, cited in the Ben Ish Hai.

Hashem doesn't give a monkeys, Boles. You do you but in my house, it really doesn't matter. The candle is lit. It is Chanukah and I send you love and blessings.

yikes friend, it’s possible to educate without shaming. jews can choose to engage with judaism to whatever degree and in whatever ways make them feel connected to their ancestry. it sounds like you have great knowledge to share! and, someone who doesn’t have that same knowledge or prioritize the specific details you do isn’t less of a jew

We have bigger fish to fry than where the candles go on the menorah. I understand what you're saying and it goes without saying that I didn't say anything with the intention of offending or upsetting you.
Like many, I'm cut off from my Jewish community because they're a bunch of filthy Zionists. So yeah, I am having to figure it out as I go along with a gentile husband and a 2 year old. I ask that you give some grace for those that don't have the knowledge/understanding/resources as you.
I am a patrilineal Jew btw, just to stir the pot further. With two generations of defectors above me. So it is my great grandfather to whom I owe my identity. I don't think it's helpful to try police people and then call it disrespect. Feels like you're trying to deliberately misunderstand the intention of the message. Which is... happy Chanukah !

Here's the source material, presuming that you want to learn something about how Jews actually practice our rituals. https://www.sefaria.org/Shulchan_Arukh%2C_Orach_Chayim.670.1?lang=bi
Specifically Simanim 670 through 684.
If your interrupted/severed lineage is Ashkenazi, then you'll want the glosses from this (since I'm not, I don't know where he discusses Hanukkah, but if you're interested I'm sure you'll find it). https://www.sefaria.org/Kitzur_Shulchan_Arukh?tab=versions

Disagree respectfully, do not shame. This is a place for Jews with many different traditions and connections to their identity.

Left to right versus right to left ? I suggest if you don’t like the candle arrangement of someone’s menorah, just stand behind the menorah and you all will be happy again…
2
u/BolesCW Mizrahi 14h ago
It's not a question of liking it or not, which is subjective. It's a question of whether or not the person is adhering to the tradition, which is objective.

I guess we each have a different… er, may I say … perspective?

Happy Hannuka from Germany!
(got some Hannuka candles from Israel via family members who live there and didn't have anything else ¯_(ツ)_/¯)

u/Millie9512 1d ago
Why would you use candles from Israel?
6
u/echtemendel Jewish Communist 1d ago
As I wrote, a family member who lives there brought them to me a while back. I didn't have anything else so I used them. I don't see it as having any material consequences tbh

I wish I had a menorah! But I don’t want to buy one if it’s made in Israel or sold by a Zionist company so I haven’t had any luck

I had trouble with this as well as this is only a couple of years old. I found this one on Etsy and opted for local shipping. It's not foolproof but it's at least some due diligence.

Like stylish. It looks very 1950s modernism. Know what I mean? Very functional but beautiful too.
