Check out this cool honda I found
It was faster than a mk5 supra around the track.

I bet it was. Decent chassis but the stock motor was a boat anchor.

The 2zz isn't much better either. Sure it's a great motor when it's new but the k series will out live and and out perform the 2zz for less money. And before toyota nerds give me flack, Im a bigger fan of the 3S and 4A than the zz or K series

Toyota nerds can suck it, K series realistically clears every single 4 cylinder in some majorly important ways. K's are the single best 4cyl platform no matter what anyone thinks

So you’re telling me that a modern engine can outperform an almost 40 year old platform‽ Color me shocked 😱

Your numbers are off there man. 97 vs 01. The two motors are contemporaries.

The outright winner of the Pike's Peak Hillclimb 4 years in a row runs a K20 if that tells you anything. Beat the fastest cars Porsche, BMW, GM, Ford etc. could bring to the table..
This year he didn't compete due to personal reasons, so a dumb EV won

F20c? I like my TLX, but my S2000 has a better 4 banger.

Trust me that TLX engine in literally any lighter chassis would whip insanely. F20c's make great power for sure, especially in s2k's, but their aftermarket support compared to K's is slimmer for sure, and much more expensive. F series is also significantly less versatile than K's as K's can be built in any drivetrain/engine configuration whereas you won't really find any awd F20c's unless there are some whacky projects I don't know about.
K24A2's will also make more torque than F's, and will rev just as high with a k20 head
The k24W's aren't the best K platform, I don't know a lot about them actually, so that may add to the reasons why it pales in comparison to your s2k, but for the base cost of a clean s2k these days you could probably build a 500whp boosted K (in a much cheaper chassis that is lol)

I had a Celica GTS with 252k on it that ran like a brand new car, that 2ZZ is a masterpiece of an engine. The 1ZZ is junk but that Yamaha top end is beast mode. 40hp bump when the lift cam engages, its vtec on steroids.

Yep. I had a 2005 Lotus Elise and I stand with u/rearwindowpup. Engine is a tank.

I met a guy with an Elise back in the mid 2000s and he said the car was great, but he wished they would have gone with Honda instead of Toyota as an engine supplier because the 200hp K series in his RSX was much better.

u/Zakkattack86 1d ago
Apples and oranges IMO. The RSX is roughly 800lbs heavier than the Elise. Mine wasn't supercharged and thinking about having additional power in that car (go-kart really) blows my mind. I have friends and know people that have done k swaps and I'll be honest, the majority of the time, it doesn't end well.

I mean, it's not powerful, but when the car weighs less than 1000kgs, you don't need a ton of power. Sure, if you actually want to track it, you need more power, and a K series or 2ZZ swap are the best bets, but for driving on the road, the 1ZZ is fine.

My coworker had K-swapped MR2 and it was a blast. Apparently pretty common mod.

Check the oil level. Go ahead. Try

I reckon it's just in the right place to remove etc. Topping up the oil however is definitely a different story 🤣

I love the swap. Everyday living seems to have added special procedures for sure 😜

This is something I fear if my motor ever dies, finding an engine that is easier to service is more important for me than higher performance

What makes you think it would be hard? I also have a k swapped MR2 Spyder and the dipstick is still easily accessible. Oil changes are also a breeze with the oil filter right out in the open. Filling it just requires a longer funnel than normal, but is still easy to do. I've even done a cam swap in the car with no issues

Honestly, this is what the Del Sol should have been.

u/Eric--V 1d ago
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Del Slo 🤣🤦♂️. Making an MR2 or a V6 longitudinal RWD setup in one would be cool.
I actually had thought about how a Boxster and the Del Sol might be similar…big brakes, good suspension design, and maybe you could do a mid engine setup.
A transverse setup with a VW DQ500 DCT trans would wake up a K motor mid engine setup, too!

The del sol’s were already expensive, all this would have made them even more unaffordable. My 94 del sol SI cost $24,360 in February 1994. That’s something like $52,000 now. I have owned a del sol since 05/2005 so I get them being desirable but super expensive.

Is this swap hard to do? Surprised I haven’t seen more like this. I bet it rips around the track. Like a mini Porsche

u/MrFurzzy 1990 Civic SI, 2004 CRV 5-speed 1d ago
It is fairly straightforward. K swapped mr2's are becoming more and more common
1
u/pythoner_ 1d ago
There are lots that make it only a little more difficult than any other k swap. It’s more difficult because the radiators are up front. They have electric power steering so that’s easier but I think AC is difficult. It’s also a good bit more powerful and more reliable so many consider it to be worth it.
Mini’s (old school) are also a popular to k swap

u/EH6TunerDaniel 1d ago
Ac is easy. It’s just a bracket that mounts the Toyota compressor to the engine and a little module.

This is my long term goal for my MR2. Though the 1ZZ is criminally overhated.
