Megathread! Windows 11 2024 Update, 24H2 (build 26100) Megathread

Welcome to the Megathread for the next major update to Windows 11: Version 24H2 (Build 26100)!

Windows 11 24H2 is an optional update and is now rolling out to Windows 11 users starting today. This is a slow staged rollout, not everyone is getting it at the same time. Keep reading to learn how to install it right now!

Low effort posts about it now being available, including simple screenshots of the Windows update screen, "I just updated" posts, and anything similar will be removed. We get it, we are all excited about this, but we are trying to keep things organized and sane during this hectic day.

The update should be available soon and there is plenty to be excited about. We gathered some resources for you to learn about this big update, some FAQs, and other relevant news!

What's new in this release?

Here are just a few highlights of the many changes and tweaks:

  • Hotpatching - New method of downloading some updates that will reduce time, bandwidth, and drive space needed. Also reduces how often updates will require a restart. More info

  • HDR wallpaper support

  • Create 7-Zip files right from Explorer

  • Performance improvements, especially for various AMD processors, and everyone will get better performance in Explorer

  • Context menus now show the text labels in addition to the cut/copy/paste buttons

  • New setup experience when booting to installation media

  • You can now install missing network drivers during the Out Of Box Experience

  • And tons of other little changes. For a fairly comprehensive list, see this ChangeWindows post

Here are some more in-depth articles on the new features and other changes:

How to get it

Windows 11 24H2 is an optional update and is now rolling out to Windows 11 users starting today. This is a slow staged rollout, not everyone is getting it at the same time. You can use the instructions below to upgrade now.

If you were running Windows 11 Insider Preview Builds, and you are currently on the 24H2 Release Preview channel, you can simply opt out of the Insider program on your PC and continue receiving the general release updates as they are released, not Insider ones. Those that are on the Canary channel will likely need to clean and reinstall Windows to get to the production version. Those on the Dev channel (build 26120) are testing 24H2 but with an enablement package to turn on some more features, one can uninstall the enablement package in the Windows Update history to revert to 26100, or do an in-place upgrade using the ISO instructions below.

Known issues

Microsoft is maintaining a list of known issues with the update. You can view their status on Microsoft's website

If you are having issues, make sure to read this subreddit's Frequently Asked Questions page to check if your question has already been answered!

Frequently Asked Questions

These questions are specific to the 24H2 update, our Windows 11 FAQ has even more questions and answers that are not specific to this release.

My computer doesn't support Windows 11, but I force-installed it. Will I still get 24H2?

You likely will need to do the same workarounds to get 22H2/23H2 to install.

How much is this upgrade?

Free!

Can I upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 24H2 without first installing the 23H2 version?

Yes! Use the instructions in the second section of this post, the various download links will soon point to the new version. Remember that the old version is 23H2 (build 22631) and the new one is 24H2 (build 26100).

Where is "Recall"? Is it going to spy on me?

The new Recall feature, which can save screenshots while you use your PC so that you can review them later is not yet available. When it is released it likely is not compatible with your current computer, it is only going to be available on a handful of new computers with the "Copilot+" branding including a special NPU processor. Also, the feature will require opting into and consenting to use, it is not enabled by default. Recall will begin rolling out to Insiders in October.

Can we move the taskbar?

Nope! No news has been announced regarding the return of those features. You can upvote and comment on the Feedback Hub posts to ask Microsoft to add them back:

How long does this update take to install?

This is a significantly larger update than the regular monthly updates you have been installing up until now. In some cases it can take a few hours to install, so be patient! You do not need to babysit it, and you can continue to use your computer during most of the installation.

I see the update notification. What should I do to prepare?

Backup your important files and folders. It’s highly unlikely that something will go wrong (and even more unlikely that it will result in a loss of data), but don’t let yourself be the unlucky one!
You can do this through physical media such a USB or through cloud storage such as OneDrive, Dropbox, etc. If you want to be extra thorough, you can make a system image backup using a tool like Macrium Reflect or Acronis

I just upgraded. What should I do now?

  • Make sure all your files and folders are exactly where you left them.
  • If you want extra information, then the Getting Started app along with this thread may prove informative to you.
  • Nothing. Just carry on using your computer like you used to, and enjoy your new features!

After I upgraded, I have lost a load of hard drive space!

This is due to Windows automatically creating a backup of your previous Windows installation in case you want to rollback or if something goes wrong during the upgrade process.

If you are not experiencing any issues with the upgrade, you can free up space by pressing start, typing ‘disc cleanup’ (without quotations) and opening the utility, before navigating to ‘clean up Windows files,’ selecting ‘Previous Installations of Windows’ and running the utility.

I just upgraded and now want to go back to the previous version of Windows 11 or Windows 10, can I?

You have a small window of opportunity to roll back to your previous version. Open the Settings app, then go to System, then Recovery, then finally pick Go Back. If this option is greyed out, you will need to clean reinstall your previous version.

Windows Update says that my PC is not ready for it yet, how can I fix this?

There are multiple causes of this, but it comes down to Microsoft identifying a compatibility issue with your computer. This could be either hardware or software related, perhaps a component of your computer or some software installed has a problem with 24H2 that is yet to be resolved. You can use the tool "FU.WhyAmIBlocked" to check for more information. You may be able to resolve this yourself, or you can wait until Microsoft releases the block.

Discussion I can't believe Windows 11's explorer is still slow

So, my parents have an old PC with just 4 GB RAM and not much processing power, which is still running Windows 10. I click on the explorer tab on the taskbar and.. BOOM! It's there instantly, no pause, no delay, just as it should be. Browsing through folders is instant, fast and reliable.

Now on my much more capable PC with 32 GB RAM, much more GPU and CPU performance, running Windows 11, clicking on the tab and it takes two seconds to open and then atleast half a second to display its content. And it takes even longer when not in memory.

Just why? Why does this old OS feel much faster on weak hardware than Windows 11 on modern hardware? And of course, my system is supported by Windows 11. And yes, I've reinstalled Windows and made sure my PC is in perfect shape but it still leads to the same unsatisfying performance. I really thought 24H2 was going to fix this, but nope.

I wonder why Microsoft is not listening to the performance complains. Top priority should be to make Windows 11 simply a good and fast OS that is better than its predecessor in every way, before adding new features. Which it really isn't in my opinion.

Edit: this is how slow it is for me with a fully cleaned browser history:

General Question Save Desktop Shortcuts to the Right Side of Desktop

How do I make Windows 11 automatically put new shortcuts on the right side of the screen instead of the default left side? Seems like this would be a really simple checkbox somewhere, but apparently it's not.

I do not want to put my shortcuts wherever I want, this is not about the Auto arrange thing. I want to put all new shortcuts to the right side automatically, just like it already does but to the left side.

Thanks.

General Question Managing productivity stuff between Windows, macOS and iOS?

For those who use Windows, iOS, and macOS, how do you manage your tasks, calendar, notes, etc.?

I’ve primarily used Apple’s stock apps in the past, but now that I’ve built a PC for gaming—and plan to use it as my main machine for school—I’m looking for cross-platform alternatives.

Previously, I used Things 3 for task management, Apple Notes, Apple Mail, and Calendar.

For now, on Windows, I’ve started using the new Outlook for mail and calendar since I’m not a heavy user of those. I’ve also set up TickTick as my task manager because it seems to be the best cross-platform option. I especially love its Notes integration. It feels like TickTick can cover most of my needs for tasks and note-taking. For longer or more detailed notes, I might use something like Obsidian or another app that syncs with iCloud.

The one thing I’m still unsure about is which browser to use across all my devices. I’ve been trying out Brave on Windows, and I like it so far, but I know there are plenty of other options. If anyone has recommendations for a browser that works seamlessly across Windows and macOS, I’d love to hear them!

Finally, if you have any recommendations for other tools or apps, please share. I prefer simple, straightforward apps without too many unnecessary features.

General Question How to restore old pc folders apps settings to new pc

A friend recieved a new win11 pc were setup was already finished. It is my understand that restoring folders apps setting from old pc backups is only possible 'during' new win11 pc setup stage. Do we need to put the new pc back into a factory default mode to allow us to do the new pc 'setup' and restore operation? Is this the only way?

Discussion Win 11 Networking with Win 7?

Just got set up on Win 11 for my first time. Trying to network with my Win 7 machines to transfer files.

I ca 'see' both machines from each other and the Win 11 machine picked up the Win 7 machine as a media source (music loaded into a Media Player Library).

But I can't transfer files from or to either.

Sharing is set for Full Permissions on C:\ on both machines.

Where else do I look?

General Question Taskbar with folder that shows contents?

Is it possible, like the days of old, to pin a folder to the taskbar at the bottom, that when you click, a little list of the contents appears then you can select an item from within the folder to open? I am sure this used to be a feature in windows in the olden days.. I am happy to use a 3rd party app to achieve this if there is one! I am trying to minimize desktop space for some games I have

Discussion How to upgrade to Win11 and prevent update 24h2 ?

Hello guys,

I urgently need your help.

I installed 24h2 and I didn't like it when it came to games.

So I downgraded to Windows 10 and wanted to try upgrading to Windows 11 and staying on 23h2 which was a version that I really liked.

Is it possible now on Windows 10 to upgrade to Windows 11 and maintain the 23h2 build and prevent the installation of 24h2?

Thank you for your help, if you need to provide any more information, let me know.

General Question How do I get icons to span across taskbar like Windows 10?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello, I am using a new laptop with Windows 11 and would like my application icons to use all available space on the taskbar (like they did with Windows 10 on my old laptop).

Currently they are stopping halfway with a three-dot button available to view the rest.

I have the Taskbar > Combine taskbar buttons option set to never.

On Windows 10, the icons would span across the taskbar and would just get smaller as you added more to fill the taskbar space.

Really appreciate any advice or input. Thanks in advance for any help.

New Feature - Insider How to Remove Edge Search Widget on Desktop

So, Windows has decided to put yet another search box on the desktop. This time, it originates from edge. It looks like this. You can click the three dots and to disable auto launch, but I find mine keeps coming back.

I made a registry key edit that should keep it from enable or coming back (for now...)

Here is the content of it for transparency sake:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge]

"WebWidgetAllowed"=dword:00000000

General Question Unable to hide airplane mode tray icon latest Windows 11 update

I work remotely hosting a Brume 2 WireGuard server at home and travel with a Beryl Ax as client connected to my company laptop via ethernet.

For obvious reasons I have to use airplane mode whilst travelling. I have always been able to hide the airplane mode icon tray in the taskbar interface in Windows 11. It seems in Microsoft’s latest update 24H2 that ability has been removed.

Are there any other workarounds? Other than downloading 3rd party customisable software, as this may flag with IT.

I have a demo next week and it may raise eyebrows as to why my machine is in airplane mode.

Many thanks

Feature Best application to manage two monitors?

I have two monitors, very big. I want certain games to launch on one monitor, while steam big picture will run on the others. I don't see alot of games that allow you to run Fullscreen on a "side" monitor... so I'm just running borderless and moving the windows around. Windows will remember where you left the borderless window... but for fullscreen only games it just goes to the main monitor. So I either have to run everything borderless or run my tv as the main monitor... kinda ruining the whole experience on a single monitor.

Feature Windows 11 and customization

Hi,

Here is how Windows 11 desktop currently looking like.

The wallpaper is dynamic : it react to both music or / and mouse movements.

Tools used are free and harmless as long as you download them from any knowledgeable source :

Lively Wallpaper : a free open source wallpaper engine - sadly not yet supported by Windows.

Explorer++ : a GREAT alternative to Windows's Explorer (trust me, if you wanna customize your Windows, have the free soft handy). Not to mention that it uses very little RAM.

Explorer Patcher made, Gabriel Valinet Radu.

I'd like to change the orb (the Window' Start Button), that is currently a pentagram to something that matches my theme. But, hell, while it looks like a regular image file, it's really hard to find a good one ! For orb you can always download a .theme file and get the orb off of it. E.G. : Witcher, and you'll have the school of the wolf or so as orb !

The orb is my highest priority to change has I hate it because it doesn't fit the theme !

Please share feedback or ask if you need further explanation about how to customize the old Desktop you so dearly adored this like ;)

Best !

Aurel

General Question What spec PC do I need for a reasonable experience on Windows 11

I mainly use Linux these days, but unfortunately there are still a few things that I need Windows for. My current Windows 10 PC is very old and more or less unusable. If I haven't used it for a few weeks it sometimes takes many hours just to boot.

What is the lowest spec I could get away with to have a reasonably well-functioning Windows 11 system? I will mainly use it for editing particular documents where there is no Linux editor available. I might also use it for music editing (FL studio), but that is just a hobby. I'm not a gamer, so I don't need a fancy graphics card.

I couple of years ago I made the mistake of upgrading my wife's PC with a very cheap windows box (about £300 new). It runs but it is painfully slow. I really wish I has spent a bit more. I don't want to make the same mistake again.

I will definitely get as SSD this time that should improve things. What processor and RAM will I need to have a system that just runs normally?
