Mod Announcement Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, here are some guidelines for requesting assistance

Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, the subreddit for you to ask questions and get support for issues related to Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems. Please give this a quick read before posting.

This subreddit is only for help related to Microsoft Windows and its built in software, like Edge, Store, PowerShell, and so on. Issues about 3rd party software like Chrome or Steam should be posted in their subreddits or /r/techsupport. Also, this is not a hardware subreddit, so issues like your hard drive is not detected would need to be posted in /r/techsupport. General discussions, news, artwork, and so on should be in /r/Windows, /r/Windows10 or similar subreddits. Malware/virus removal has been covered extensively in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/33evdi/suggested_reading_official_malware_removal_guide/

Posts are required to have a moderately descriptive title. Submissions with vague titles like just "help me" will be removed. You don't need to write an essay in the title, but everyone should have a rough idea what you are asking about before even clicking the link. Titles like "I'm encountering System Exception errors when launching Photos" or "20H2 update won't install" are acceptable, but the more details the better.

The body of your post should also be as detailed as possible. We are not mind readers, and nobody is going to want to play 20 questions. Help us help you, your post should include:

  • Your full Windows version, which on Windows 10 is listed in the Settings app under System -> About, it will be the OS Build number.

  • Details about your device, like the hardware specifications.

  • Any recent changes you have made, such as installing/uninstalling software or accessories. Any updates you have installed, tools you have ran, or anything else you think may be relevant.

  • Include details on your error messages and error codes, these are critical to figuring out the issue.

  • Tell us what you have already tried to fix this. Any tools you have ran, and changes you tried, and so on. I know it is a meme at this point, but seriously, reboot your computer, it often fixes things!

  • If possible, include screenshots or video. If you are including screenshots, try to use screenshot software like Snip & Sketch tool built into Windows 10, then you can upload them to a free image host like https://imgur.com to put in your post. We understand that using screenshot software isn't always an option, you can take photos with a phone or similar device, but please be sure to check to make sure everything is in focus and is legible.

This subreddit follows the same rules as /r/Windows, you can view the full rule page here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows/wiki/rules

The TL;DR of the rules is be polite, helpful, and don't encourage piracy.

Windows XP / Older How do I get past this screen to setup Windows 98?

Post image
Upvotes

I'm currently trying to install 98 onto a Dell Inspiron 2500 I have (it originally ran Windows ME) after NTDLR completely borked on XP (which I currently don't have a copy of). I put in the startup disk and the CD-ROM (as booting up from CD-ROM without the startup disk just results in the same "NTDLR is missing" message I keep getting), however every time I get stuck at this screen and don't know how to move on from it as no error message or anything is really given. Anybody have an idea how to fix this?

Windows 10 \windows\system32\winload.efi error code:0xc0000225

Upvotes

I tried to clean boot my laptop to stop some lag and when I opened my laptop I couldn’t sign in, I’m not sure what happened but my pin wasn’t available and I can’t set up pin due to being able to connect to internet because of the clean boot. I’ve tried everything on the advanced startup menu, I tried to use startup repair, start up settings, command promt, I tried to uninstall updates both quality and feature, and I can’t use system restore either. It all sends me to a blue screen of death saying “\windows\system32\winload.efi and an error code:0xc0000225” I even stupidly bought a usb stick in desperation and thought it might fix it but nothing.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Windows 11 Windows subsystem for android multi-touch controls.

Upvotes

I’m trying to run an Android game (Sims FreePlay) on my HP laptop using the Windows subsystem for Android (in Windows 11), except I can’t figure out the multi-touch controls (this laptop is NOT touchscreen).

The arrow keys/mouse work to move, and the scroll wheel works to zoom in and out, but I can’t figure out ANY method to rotate the screen in-app (what would be the double-press and rotate gesture).

You literally can’t get past the tutorial without completing this step, so I’m stuck.

I can’t seem to find anything online anywhere else about this. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Windows 11 I wanted to know if what I'm experiencing is an error between NVIDIA and Windows in its 24H2 version.

Upvotes

Since I updated to the latest version of Windows I'm experiencing errors in different apps like Discord, when scrolling through chats they get stuck halfway and then it gets fixed, the same thing happens to me with my browser in X/Twitter where I'm scrolling and the page gets distorted. I wanted to know if it's a driver problem or just Windows.

Windows 11 Deleted Bluetooth in device manager - how do I get it back?

Upvotes

Title says it all. I was trying to fix a problem where Bluetooth wasn’t showing in my icons and nothing would connect so took some Reddit advice and now I’ve done this.

So far I have tried restarting the Bluetooth stuff in the Window key + R menu and also scanning for hardware changes in device manager, neither worked.

Thanks for any help.

Windows 11 Windows 11 wont connect to Wi-Fi automatically

I cannot for the life of me get my Windows installation to connect to Wi-Fi automatically. Every time I reboot I have to go and click Connect manually.

OS: Windows 11 Pro Version 22H2 (OS Build 26100.2605)

NIC: TP-Link Wi-Fi 6E Intel AX210 AXE5400

  • Connect automatically checkbox is ticked.
  • Power saver on NIC is disabled Device Manager.
  • I also disabled power saver on the Bluetooth part of the PCIe device since it is part of the same card as my NIC.
  • Windows says NIC driver is up to date.
  • I added fMinimizeConnections DWORD with a value of (0) in Regedit under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WcmSvc\GroupPolicy
  • As a workaround I tried to create a batch script which runs on startup and executes the command netsh wlan connect name=MySSID which didn't work so I tried running the command manually and encountered the following error. Network shell commands need location permission to access WLAN information.
    • I thought this location setting might have been causing all my problems but from what I have researched it shouldn't interfere with Windows connecting automatically to Wi-Fi, it just makes this command not work. If anyone else has evidence to the contrary please let me know down below but I would prefer to leave this setting as is.

Windows 11 Windows won't install on MacBook pro

Upvotes

So I originally had fyde os on it and decided to install windows. So I installed tiny 11 and gave me a "installation has failed" error. Then I tried 24h2 and gave me a " not enough space" error even tho I have 500 GB. Then I fixed itself then gave me the same "installation has failed" error. So then I tried 10 and it gave me the "not enough space error" I didn't bother trying 8.1 since its unsupported. Does anyone have any recommendations to fix this?

Windows 11 Problem with exFAT Crucial X9 portable ssd

Upvotes

I use my PC for putting media on the x9. Went on a trip and used the x9 with my ipad air and iphone 15 with no issues.

Come back and hook up the x9 to my PC via USB 3.0 and nothing. It won't read or see it.

But when I open Device Manager, it's there. When I open Disk Management, it's there. But I can't do anything with it. In Disk Management I try to assign a letter to the drive but I can't. When I right click it, everything is grayed out.

I'm pulling my hair out over here.

Windows 11 How to switch which drive windows will install on after a wipe.

Upvotes

I have two hard drives on my computer: SSD (D:) and HDD (C:). I currently have windows installed on my HDD. I'm going to wipe my computer and I want windows to be installed on my SSD when it's rebooted after the wipe. How do I make sure windows is installed on the SSD after I wipe my PC? I don't want to do any of those sketchy data backups. I'm starting with a clean slate and just want to make sure windows goes on the right drive. I am not worried about how long it takes.

My PC keeps randomly blue screening a few minutes after startup with error codes such as kernel-mode-heap-corruption. Anyone have any knowledge as to what's going on and how to fix it. The best idea I have is avast antivirus, however it's a long shot.

Windows 11 Totally Clean Reinstall on HP laptop

I really want do a completely clean reinstall of win 11 on my hp probook 450 laptop (remove every thing from hp) but save all my "user data" , photos, downloads, documents, settings, etc. I have tried to copy and paste to an external hd but that does not work properly because the data files are open (being used by me)

I found this https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/copy-all-the-user-personal-files-included-in/f2b42df5-c988-4bba-8da0-a4ad8a5ddf4e but I don't quite understand the directory/file names .

My current configuration :- Internal drive=C target drive=D user=me

Device name HP-Nightmare

Processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1355U 1.70 GHz

Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.6 GB usable)

Device ID 89C5DE31-6EB4-41FF-964A-5F91160D2556

Product ID 00355-61485-06737-AAOEM

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

System

Edition Windows 11 Pro

Version 24H2

Installed on ‎8/‎10/‎2024

OS build 26100.2605

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.36.0

1/Why would I need to make a "bootable drive" ?

2/ Could I just do a "copy and paste" from the external drive ?

Sorry for all the questions, but I haven't used command for 30 years

Windows 11 PC keeps randomly shutting off

I have tested my PC with two different power supplies and no difference, happened on both.

I had originally thought it was something to do with Easy Anti Cheat as I only noticed it happening during playing rust. But now it has started happening outside off rust we can rule that out.

This is a fairly new PC that I built it has a rx 6600, ryzen 5 3600,16 gb ddr4 3600mhz ram and 500gb name m. 2 ssd. It never used to happen but it has started to do this over the past few weeks.

Please help.

Windows 11 my laptop won't let me type in my password...

hey everyone, I am coming across a problem lately which I am struggling to understand. I have an HP laptop, (2024) which has windows 11 on it.

in the last month or so, everytime I log in after my laptop went to sleep mode, it throws an error with a code I didn't remember (0X something) which says that passcode isn't available and that I have to reconfigure it, but there is no possible way for me to enter the configuration settings. so every time I have to restart the laptop and that is the only "fix" I got so far.

what do I do? I don't want to pay someone to reinstall me windows, and I believe there are other solutions than that. could I have damaged the memory or something? if I did, wouldn't it cause more problems than just this?

does anyone else have this same issue or is it a ME issue? did I damage something inside my laptop?

my OS version is 22631.4602

I have the wireless option on but it doesn’t show anything of the sort. I’ve been looking it up but apparently no one else has had this problem before. Someone please help. (OS build: 26100.2033)
