Hi, Scottish resident for 20 years. The Royal Banner is used pretty interchangeably with the Scottish Saltire here. Don't assume that anyone flying it is a Royalist, most people just use it to represent Scotland.

But it ultimately is a royalist flag, no? If Scotland became independent, would you expect the royal banner to continue usage?

Most of the people who use it aren't using it to represent that. Mostly they are Scotland football fans.

Odd really because the Scottish Football Association has an excellent banner of arms that might be used instead – the lion is purple and surrounded by eleven thistles rather than the French fence.

I found a stock photo that shows possible flags on the other side. So it's incomplete whatever it is.

Looks like the Royal Banner of Scotland to me. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Banner_of_Scotland ].

Don't know why it's there though.

Hello vr_plays,

Check out our frequently asked flags page! Your request might be there.

When asking for a flag to be identified, please provide context when possible, including:

  • Where the flag was found (without compromising privacy)

  • When the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag

  • Who might own the flag (a general description is fine)

These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier.

I literally just saw this flag on someone’s car along with the Scotland flag and wondered what it was. That’s insane
