This is Beijing, a city full of ordinary yet kind-hearted people

They are already selling them very cheaply, from 17 to 70 cents(USD)each, but even so, they are still worried that some people may not be able to afford them.

Stay in Macau

How much hassle is it to stay in Zhuzai versus Macau for a night? I have some Hilton hotel points I could use. Probably a good chunk of the two days would be to see the Cotai Strip and maybe some small restaurants. I understand there’s a border crossing but how difficult would it be to go back and forth a couple times in the two day trip? Would need to take a taxi or something convenient.

Itinerary Check: 21 Days South-West China

Hi everyone!

I’m planning a trip to China in March/April and would love your feedback on my itinerary. My trip starts in Kunming and ends in Chengdu, which are fixed points. I’m especially excited to use this season to see flowers blooming — for example, azaleas in Bijie, cherry blossoms or other flowers in Kunming, and rapeseed fields in Luoping.

I’m also really interested in:

  • City life: discovering good places to eat and experiencing the local vibe.
  • Nature: scenic landscapes and unique sights.
  • Ancient towns: I love exploring traditional architecture and local culture.

I will only be using public transport, or taxis/didi and want to make sure my plan is realistic. I’m also unsure if I should add another day in Kunming to explore more of Yunnan’s amazing food scene and perhaps try Pu’er tea — but I don’t know what to shorten in the rest of my trip.

Here’s my current plan:

Day 1: Kunming

  • Arrival in Kunming in the afternoon
  • Visit Guandu Ancient Town
  • Overnight: Kunming

Day 2: Kunming

  • Explore Yuantongshan Park for cherry blossoms
  • Visit the Flower Market (Dounan Flower Market?)
  • Overnight: Kunming

Day 3: Luoping

  • Travel to Luoping
  • Overnight: Luoping

Day 4: Luoping

  • Visit Jinji Peak, Niujie Luosi Field, and/or Jiulong Waterfalls
  • Overnight: Luoping

Day 5: Bijie/Baili

  • Travel to Bijie/Baili
  • Overnight: Bijie/Baili

Day 6: Bijie/Baili

  • Explore Azaleas 百里杜鹃 (Baili Dujuan)
  • Is there anything else to do in Bijie?
  • Overnight: Bijie/Baili

Day 7: Guiyang

  • Travel to Guiyang
  • Visit Qingyan Ancient Town
  • Overnight: Guiyang

Day 8: Guiyang

  • Explore the city
  • Optional: Take a day trip to Langde via Kaili
  • Overnight: Guiyang

Day 9: Jiabang Rice Terraces

  • Take a 2-hour train to Congjiang, then a bus to Jiabang
  • See the rice terraces at sunset; is this something one can do alone or is a guide needed?
  • Overnight: Jiabang Rice Terraces

Day 10: Basha (岜沙) or Zhaoxing (肇兴)

  • Travel to Basha or Zhaoxing (which one do you recommend?)
  • Overnight: Basha/Zhaoxing

Day 11: Guiyang

  • Drive back to Guiyang
  • Should I skip this and take a long trip to Chongqing instead?
  • Overnight: Guiyang

Day 12: Chongqing

  • Travel to Chongqing
  • Explore the city
  • Overnight: Chongqing

Day 13: Chongqing

  • Continue exploring Chongqing
  • Overnight: Chongqing

Day 14: Shangli Ancient Town (Ya'an)

  • Travel to Ya'an and arrive around 15:00
  • Continue to Shangli Ancient Town
  • Overnight: Shangli

Day 15: Shangli Ancient Town (Ya'an)

  • Visit Mengding Tea Plantation
  • Overnight: Shangli

Day 16: Shangli Ancient Town (Ya'an)

  • Visit Bifengxia Panda Base and Gorge
  • Travel to Chengdu in the evening
  • Overnight: Chengdu

Day 17: Chengdu

  • Explore the city
  • Overnight: Chengdu

Day 18: Chengdu

  • Take a day trip to Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Qingcheng Mountains Overnight: Chengdu

Day 19: Chengdu

  • Take a day trip to Leshan or Emeishan? (which one is better?)
  • Overnight: Chengdu

Day 20: Chengdu

  • Take a day trip to an ancient town (Anren, Xinchang, or Yuantong?)
  • Which one do you recommend?
  • Overnight: Chengdu

Day 21: Chengdu

  • Flight back in the evening

Does this itinerary seem feasible? Would you recommend adding another day in Kunming, and if so, what would you shorten? I would also love to include Zhenyuan in Guizhou, but the itinerary is already so full. Any tips for must-try local foods, sights, or advice for public transport in these areas would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help! 😊

What to wear in late March?

Upvotes

Hi, I will be traveling in China from March 16 to 31 - Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai. Can you give me an idea of what kind of clothes to bring please. I was planning to bring mostly sweater/jumper, leggings, trousers, maybe a coat? Are those the right clothes to bring? I was told temp can range from 5 to 15 deg C and weather can be unpredictable so I am a bit confused. Wear I live, 15 can be warm and can be a tshirt weather if it's sunny and not windy. Is that the same in China?

Train from Shanghai area...advice

Upvotes

Our daughter has been in Nanjing studying, and we are travelling to meet her. We will be in Shanghai for 6 days, then Nanjing, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Over two weeks in total. We have been to China before, and want to take a fast train somewhere outside of Shanghai. I know that tourism dominates, but we are keen to go somewhere scenic, with some walking, and perhaps a smaller town. Any tips appreciated. We are not into group tours. I have looked at the UNESCO World Heritage sites...Thanks! Josie in Australia

Direct flights from Chengdu to Zhangjiajie

Upvotes

Hi there,

I am planning to travel from Chengdu to Zhangjiajie in February but I can't seem to find any direct flights, when I looked it up previously this year they were coming up. Does anyone know if the direct flight between these two places has stopped?

Thanks!

3/4 weeks in South/Western China

Hi guys!

I'm slowly planning a trip to China for May and I'd appreciate any help with the very rough itinerary I have so far.

About me: I was in China 5 years ago and did all the standard things for first-timer, Xian, Shanghai, Beijing, Yangshuo, Zhangjiajie, Hong Kong. I'm mostly food motivated and like to discover new cultures via food, getting lost in the cities, hiking in nature. Do not really care about museums or hundreds of Buddha statues, unless they are really extremely impressive or require interesting hikes to get to them. Dislike planes, like trains and buses.

Plan so far (needs to start and end in HK):

- land in Hong Kong, take train to Shenzhen (1 day for city sightseeing and trying out food),

- two days in Guangzhou (more or less the same activities as in Shenzhen),

- train to Kunming, 2-3 days here, street markets, sightseeing, cuisine, stone forest

- train to Dali, 1-2 days, renting a bike, riding a bike through countryside

- bus/taxi to Shaxi, visiting old town, sightseeing, 1 night

- bus/train to Yibin, 1-2 nights, sightseeing, walks, food, maybe taking a bus to Shunan Bamboo Forest

- train to Chengdu, 3-4 days, pandas, food, hiking Mt Emei

- train to Chongqing, 2-3 days in a city

- train to Changsha, mainly to try Hunan food and hit some street markets

- back to HK

Would you add anything along this route, or think some parts are not worth it? I'm planning on spending about 25-30 days in China, so it's all very flexible at the moment. I was wondering if skipping Dali/Shaxi in favor of visiting some sea resorts in the South might be worth it as it will be getting quite hot at this point, on the other hand both towns sound quite relaxing and different from all the other big city vibes I have on my list.

Do ATMs in China typically have withdrawal fees? I’m wondering if I can withdraw with my Wise card with no/ low atm fees (I need cash to give red pocket to family)

Wuhan or Xi'an for 36 hours?

I have just over a day to kill between Chongqing and Shanghai. Was looking at either Wuhan or Xi'an as both cities seem to be medium sized and you can see a decent amount in a full day. Advice would be greatly appreciated - or open to other city suggestions if they have good rail/air links from Chongqing. Thanks!

Loose Itinerary Check

I will be taking my first international trip to visit China with my girlfriend and see the sites as well as visit her family. Our trip dates will be 5/14 - 5/29 so 16 days total including travel. The things we have set in stone right now are starting with a 4 day guided trip in Beijing. We need to spend time in her hometown of Ningbo, then visit family in Hangzhou as well, maybe 6 days total. We plan to fly back home out of Shanghai and visit her friend there to finish our trip. We really wanted to add one more city to our list - Chengdu or Chongqing, but in reality I think we are likely tapped out already; just want to get confirmation it would be taking on too much for our timeframe. Cheers

Shuanglang vs. East of Dali Ancient Town: Best Area to stay in Dali

I’m planning a trip to Dali mid January and trying to decide where to stay. The two most popular lakefront areas seem to be the Shuanglang scenic area and the area east of Dali Ancient Town, between Caicun and Longkan. My main goal is to cycle around and enjoy good food. Which of these two areas would you recommend? Or is there an even better area to stay in Dali? Thank you!

Planning 2 week trip to Yunnan; how difficult with the itinerary be?

Hello this will be my 2nd time traveling to China with my partner. We speak/write fluent Mandarin and have Alipay/WeChat set up.

We are planning our next trip 14 days max to Yunnan. Our goal is to make it to; Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La and Xishuangbanna.

Do you guys think it would be possible if we solo’d the trip or is having a personal driver/travel group a must for some cities?

The reason why I ask is because the 1st time we went to Hunan we went to some cities far away from Didi access which made us feel uncomfortable getting rides from random people.

Any other advice/tips appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help.

Will new passport be problem for flight/hotel bookings?

I've booked a number of flights, and hotels through (trip .com). Just realized I will have a new passport by then. Will I encounter issues at hotels, if the passport number doesn't match the bookings? Or should I just take my old passport and it will be OK?

Is it difficult to get a DiDi from Harbin airport into town if I arrive at midnight

Will it be difficult for me to call a DiDi from Harbin airport to the walking street if I arrive at midnight? Wondering if I should pre-arrange an airport transfer instead.

Storing luggage for several weeks

In February I will go to China and stay until the middle of August. It's quite a long stay, so I will have to bring lots of luggage. I will be in Wenzhou for 5 months, but I plan on going to Shanghai in the middle of July and then maybe a couple weeks in Beijing. Bringing all my luggage with me in these travels seems extremely complicated, so I would like to leave half of it stored somewhere. My apartment contract in Wenzhou ends in July, so I must put it somewhere else. Should I look for a place to store luggage in Wenzhou, travel and then come back to Wenzhou to take it and book my return flight from there? Are there luggage storage services available, and will they cost a lot if I leave my stuff there for several weeks? I read that there's an app called 顺丰速运 that allows you to ship luggage from one city to another, but I'm afraid it would be complicated for a foreigner (I don't speak chinese well). Any suggestions?

Xi’an Chang Hen Ge or Legend of Camel Bells in Xi’an?

I’m a foreigner and don’t understand Mandarin.

Also, can I buy the tickets on-site or do I get it in advance via Klook?

Many thanks!

Hi everyone, may I know if getting a Didi is easy in Xi’An? I see tour bookings with hotel pickups are generally quite pricey and was wondering if Didi is a feasible alternative? Thanks in advance!

Is Yellow River Stone Forest Park in Jingtai County going to be completely submerged in a dam reservoir in the next couple of years? Unclear info in English online.

Hi, planning an itinerary in Gansu and was told to decide between Yellow River Stone Forest National Park (黄河石林国家地质公园) and Yongtai Ancient Fortress (永泰古城) in Jingtai County of Gansu for one of my travel days by the tour guide I've contracted.

I've read articles from SCMP about construction of the Heishanxia Dam/黑山峡坝 being greenlit and accelerated in 2023 and have seen some Trip.com reviews talking about water lines and the potential of the entire park being drowned by 2027, so I wanted to investigate if the park is going to get wiped out. However, I haven't been able to find reliable information in English confirming a set range of time for the flooding, water level, future park status, etc., so I wanted to check in to see if there were any Gansu experts who happened to know here.

If the park indeed has a short-term life span at this point, I would probably go to Yellow River Stone Forest then and save Yongtai for a different trip.

Thank you!

Confusion about esim vs. physical sim vs. vpn vs. data roaming

Hi, currently planning trip to China and need help determining what is the best option to use. I’ve heard of using an esim or data roaming but since they do not use a Chinese number, I am not sure if I should just get a physical sim instead. For a physical sim, would I have to buy a seperste phone and physical SIM card in China since inserting it into my phone would erase my data? How is the process of purchasing a physical sim like? Will an esim allow me to make phone calls and texts? Also if I get a SIM card would I still need a vpn to access the internet? Thanks.
