Petty Complaint

Can I post a petty complaint? It’s really not anything compared to things we all have experienced/done to ourselves. But it feels unfair.

It feels unfair to wake up with a headache when I haven’t been drinking. lol. I know it’s dumb. I know that I can be dehydrated or eat like crap and that will have consequences too. That drinking isn’t the only thing that causes health issues, but it still feels unfair.

Ok that’s all from my childish attitude.

I feel you. Got sick a few months ago and kept feeling like what is this bullshit, I didn't even do anything to deserve this lol.

The positive spin is that I actually had sick time to call out at work without stressing and throwing up is now a reason to call out and not just Monday morning.

But still.

Not many will agree with me and it may not be applicable to what you've felt, but I did experience what I used to call, phantom hangovers, when I was drinking daily. When I skipped a Thursday for instance, I'd still wake up on Friday mornings feeling like I had drunk the previous night.

Not quite the same as getting the flu, but I do think I have an explanation for you because I had a similar experience...I was a daily drinker and the same thing happened when I skipped a day, but there's nothing phantom about it, that's withdrawal.

We talk about the scary seizure risk withdrawals here more because they are dangerous, but mild withdrawal feels like a hangover. Symptoms typically peak around 24-48 hours so if you last drank on Wed night I'd expect the withdrawals to be there on Friday morning at about 36 hours.

I know it was pretty jarring for me when I learned I had been drinking to the point of physical dependency a lot earlier than I'd thought. But I was there way before I started getting the bad shakes etc. I just didn't know that's what it was.

Makes sense. It's probable that I became physically dependent.

I guess it’s just a part of being an adult.

Life is suffering. Appreciate the moments of peace and happiness.

This is true.

My friends had a winter solstice party. everyone was drinking except me. I woke up the next morning feeling hungover from the amount of soda/ coffee I consumed. It felt unfair as well😂

Feel this lol. “Sick with no hangover? Should be illegal”

One time I drank 6 vernors at a party and woke up with a sugar hangover. I was like damn for real? That’s life I guess!

Yep. That life indeed.

Yes! And I hate getting no sleep! Sometimes I get insomnia for no reason.

What's that all about?

I just spent the last 24 hours exorcisting vomit and I didn’t even have a drink. Definitely wasn’t fair lol

Sometimes when I get these petty annoyances in life, it helps me put in perspective how bad I used to be and how good I have it now. I remember getting sick about eight months ago and the symptoms were really annoying, but I was still able to do my regular stuff. I just thought back to one of the many days I was hungover and I could barely get out of bed. My mind would be a complete mess from hangxiety; taking a week or longer to feeling normal.

So glad I didn't have to deal with that this morning.

IWNDWYT!

This is great perspective.

Wattabout hitting your finger with a hammer? So unfair the thing is as hard as fuck.

5

u/onlinerev 20h ago

Agreed. Actually getting injured while sober seems unfair too lol.

I've stopped getting injured since I got sober. Big injuries, at least. The bruises because I walk into things have existed my whole life. 🙃

I thought this would be the first holiday season I’d have with no headaches. I was wrong. I have the flu AND Covid. 😂

u/onlinerev 19h ago

Yeah it’s almost like regular things happen to regular people huh

I get it, when I sobered up earlier this year from some seriously heavy drinking even at 3 months sober I was waking up every day exhausted, drained, feeling like shit etc and yet everyone kept posting about how amazing they felt after a couple of weeks sober and that just wasn't my reality at all, you feel like you're being short changed compared to everyone else.

You did this really hard thing, got sober, and then you feel like 5% better and it makes no sense.

Lol. I don't know what Christmas food I ate but I woke up yesterday with HORRIBLE heartburn that reminded me of my drinking days.

Took a few seconds longer than normal to remember I hadn't been drinking, but still wasn't sure what the offending item was.

Very disconcerting

I used to have to puke ( a lot ) after a night or a bender of drinking.

I got the stomach flu a couple of weeks back, and I was so bummed that I still had to throw up as a human who was no longer drinking 😑😂

Feel you. Feels unfair at 5 foot 11 175 lb. Lost 40 lb in the last year. that I still can't enjoy eating on the holidays without concern for my cholesterol (29M). The one plus side is I am able to channel the anger/addictive tendencies to absurd dieting and fasting. That's a plus 😂. Appointment on Jan 19th! Hoping to be under 170 then and get good marks

I woke up this morning with a headache, and feeling a little bit sick. I told the wife who was confused, because I never really got headaches ever, even when I was drinking.

You just can't win!

I feel you brother. I wake up in the mornings with a scratchy throat and a heavy head. It disappear after about 30 minutes but I wonder if it is my body recovering, or is it I just noticing these because of alcohol fog.

Yep. I felt like I was getting a random cold. It has gotten progressively worse. Feels more like the Flu, bleh. But - at least I know it’s not my fault, I didn’t cause it! Still sucks but what can you do…

u/crinklefryenjoyer 18h ago

u/onlinerev 18h ago

So rude!

u/ravinred 1068 days 18h ago

OMG RIGHT? Have you woken up feeling like crap and reflexively tried to remember what you drank yesterday?

But the crappiest sick morning it still better than a hangover.

1

u/onlinerev 17h ago

That’s what happened today.

u/mikeyj198 712 days 17h ago

one thing that finally made me get serious about my diet was waking up feeling hungover due to late night snacking.

F that!

It’s like you’re waking up with someone else’s hangover. I usually think to myself, sure enough, someone somewhere is waking up that should be plagued with that feeling is saying “I can’t believe I don’t have a hangover!” 🥲

1

u/Responsible-Toe-6135 17h ago

When I work out too hard before bed I end up feeling exactly like I do with a bad hangover it sucks!! But you can know you didn’t make any bad choices that harmed your or someone else yesterday

2

u/onlinerev 16h ago

It’s very good to know that it’s not my fault.

1

u/onlinerev 16h ago

Well at least it’s not because of drinking.

I was also offended at life's problems not attributed to alcohol
