Meetup #2 -- Santa Anita Canyon and Upper Winter Creek via Chantry Flats --1/19/13

For our first meetup of 2013, and our second meet up ever, we will meet at Chantry Flats for a roughly 9 mile loop hike taking us through a lush canyon with cabins, waterfalls and a peak. I chose this hike because its a great beginner hike, as well as a way for you to get acquainted with one of the main jump off points for longer journeys into the ANF. Meet at the trailhead at 8:30 AM and we will be leaving from the Trailhead at 8:45AM sharp. If you need a parking pass you can get one from the Ranger Station near the highway, the pack station at the trailhead or the REI just down the street from the ranger station in Arcadia. If you need a ride, I have room for 2-3 other people coming from Sherman Oaks. As we get closer to the date, I will post weather info and more.

You will need: 2L of water minimum. Lunch/Snacks. Shoes/Boots - no sandals or open toed shoes. Parking Pass Your 10 essentials

You are going to want a backpack to keep your water, lunch and snacks with you, and will allow you to stash your layers of clothing when the weather changes. Bring a camera! There are lots of beautiful sights, and you will want to remember them.

Modern Hiker post of this hike

Edit: IF enough people want to hike later, we can, but the parking lot at Chantry flats fills very fast and you will be easily adding some milage if the parking lot is full.

PLEASE COMMENT if you will be coming so I can gauge how many people there will be.

UPDATE as of 1/14 The weather should be great. We are a go for this meetup. Remember it can be quite chilly in the canyon and shad without sun so bring layers. If you have any questions please post or PM me! I will be right next to the trailhead at Chantry flats where the restroom area is.

UPDATE as of 1/17 Alright, Ill be at the trailhead with a bright orange jacket. The weather should be a perfect 67 degrees. See you guys out there!

THANKS to everyone that showed up! It was a great hike. Hope to see you guys again soon!

I hiked this trail twice last week. The second time I hiked it, it was raining and snowing higher up on the trail. A real beautiful hike.

Dave8910, I was just about to tell you about this meetup and that, well, maybe we ought to join in. It's me, dwdavid89. In high school, everybody knew me as dwdavid89.

Aw, damn, you must have literally just missed us because we waited until 9. I hope you get to make the next one! 5 showed up for this one. Thats awesome you did the hike anyways. How was parking for you?

I had to park way the fuck down the hill. It wasn't really that bad though. I wonder if I walked past you guys and didn't realize it? I was wearing an orange shirt with yellow underarmor underneath.

1

u/sgantm20 Jan 20 '13

I dont remember passing you. Yeah I had to park way down the hill too.

I am interested but cannot commit until a closer date. It's a great hike.

Sorry, I would love to join in but the drive is just a little too far for me. Hope you guys have fun.

1

u/sgantm20 Jan 08 '13

For future reference where is your area and ill try and plan ones closer to other places

1

u/OBEYthesky Jan 08 '13

I'm in central San Diego county, so orange county/south riverside is doable for me, but we have great hiking down here too!

1

u/sgantm20 Jan 08 '13

Wow, yeah I used to work in Irvine, and even that was far. I would love to hear about some places down there. I'll look into hikes further south for the next ones. You guys can organize meetups too!

1

u/OBEYthesky Jan 08 '13

That would be cool, and yeah I have tried to get something going in /r/sandiego but haven't been able to do anything yet.

El Cajon Mountain!!

1

u/OBEYthesky Jan 08 '13

El Cajon Mountain is one of my favorite hikes in the county, but it's kind of a bitch haha. Mt. Miguel is a good choice too if we want to do something more challenging but if not, there are plenty of other great hikes just east.

Looks fun. I'm probably in, coming up from Oceanside.

u/goodknee Jan 03 '13

sounds like a lot of fun, I might be up for it depending on weather and a few other things..

I'm not normally a well-prepared hiker, what's good to wear?

1

u/sgantm20 Jan 04 '13

Its in a shaded canyon. I wear those convertible pants so if I get warm I can change. In the morning it will be pretty chilly most likely with it warming up in the afternoon. You can get by with trainers and tennis shoes, but boots or trail runners are recommended as there is some slippery rock. Honestly, you could probably get by in jeans and a sweatshirt if you really had nothing else to wear. This is a pretty easy hike, although you do want to make sure that you are comfortable to walk nearly 10 miles. I dont like to hike in jeans because they dont stretch and are restricting, and if they get wet, they get very cold and do not dry out easily. This goes the same for cotton socks. I wear wool socks because of this, summer or winter. If you get cold easily, you may want to bring a beanie for the morning until you warm up.

I do believe that both my wife and I will join you guys, that's one of our favorite hikes.

Will be there with my Reddit /r/bicycling arm warmers for easy identification.

awesome!

I'm in. I'll be coming up from Costa Mesa, and I can take 3-4 other people (Preferably from around Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Newport, Santa Ana, or Fountain Valley). I'd actually prefer to have people to carpool with as it's a long drive.

1

u/sgantm20 Jan 08 '13

Awesome! Thanks for helping carpool!

2

u/Dwdavid89 Jan 16 '13

I should be able to make this one. I'll be driving in from Fontana.

2

Likewise! It was a great hike. Hope to see you on the next one!

u/Dwdavid89 Jan 20 '13

Great experience. If we do end up trying an overnight trip next time, I'll definitely be asking for tips on what gear to bring along.

1

u/matthewpeters Jan 04 '13

I am intersted as long as the weather looks good

1

u/SirSaif Jan 06 '13 edited Jan 06 '13

You still have room in your car? I'll go. This hike looks great.

EDIT: I live in North Hollywood, so it's not that far.

u/sgantm20 Jan 07 '13

I'll PM you.

Hey everyone. New to the subreddit. I'll probably be there but won't be able to say for sure until the middle of the week...

2

u/WooookieCrisp Jan 19 '13

Alright looks like I'm in. See everyone tomorrow!

1

u/WooookieCrisp Jan 19 '13

And of course after saying that I've got to bow out. Hope everyone has a good hike!
