Announcement Why all the posts related to the glove fiasco were removed

Timeline of events (UTC):

  • 19:51 u/Heavy_Pressure_4739 posted his response to Daniel Morad's video
  • 22:24 The post is removed by AutoModerator
  • During the night automod removes several other posts regarding the situation
  • 08:37 The post is manually reapproved and stickied

So why did AutoModerator decide to remove a post 2.5 hours after it had been posted? Shouldn't it have been removed instantly if it matched any filters? Well at the time it was posted it didn't match any filters, but AutoModerator is also able to look at the number of reports.

We rely on community reports to find posts that aren't appropriate for the subreddit, but we also have AutoMod set up in a way so that it can automatically remove posts if multiple reports are received. This is very useful for quickly removing the most egregious rule violations (think inappropriate advertisements, gore, nsfw, etc.) even when no mods are available. Afterwards these posts will be reviewed by a mod in the modqueue.

We also added a variation of this filter that has a lower threshold for posts made by young accounts. The threshold for those posts was 2 reports, which in hindsight was not the best idea.

Reports under the original post

When the original post received it's 2nd report with the reason "It's personal and confidential information" AutoMod duly removed it until it can be reviewed.

During the past night the "Multiple reports" filter got triggered 9 times, including versions of it with higher thresholds. We never receive so many reports on posts, but at this time we do not have any evidence of brigading.

All posts removed by automod during the night

To avoid a similar situation in the future, we have increased the thresholds for the "multiple reports" filters and are considering disabling them completely

Announcement I’ve made the decision to open the subreddit back up.

u/Spez refuses to back down, and is going so far as to kick out moderators of large subreddits if even one opposes the blackout. That’s not what happened here, u/Overspeeed and I have been on the same page on the blackout since day one, including the decision to extend it. However, u/Spez hasn’t just doubled-down, he’s quadrupled-down, to the point of announcing potential changes to the moderation guidelines to make it harder for moderators to protest.

What bothers me isn’t just that he’s charging for the API, I figured they already were, before all this. Isn’t not even just that Reddit is charging exorbitant rates with no exceptions or grandfathering. It’s the fact that u/Spez, and the board that seems to have silently stuck with him all this time, clearly don’t give a flying fuck about the community that built this site, from the users who’ve seen this site as they comfortable haven with the decline— if not fall of places like Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter, to the moderators who collectively put in millions of not billions of hours of unpaid labour (oh, yeah, in case you didn’t know, moderators are unpaid volunteers) to build communities that fosters some of the best engagement the internet has to offer… well, and sometimes the worst, but that’s the paid admins’ job to handle.

See, that’s the thing, it’s not that the admins shouldn’t have no place in this community, of course not. It’s that they need to facilitate the tools for this place to thrive, not stifle them. Apps like Apollo and others weren’t just better ways to browse Reddit, they’re better ways to moderate Reddit. You can take that either as an endorsement of Apollo, or as a statement of how much Reddit’s app sucks, it’s true either way. Anyway, the admins in this case aren’t just taking away one of the main ways we make their site better, they’re punishing us for speaking up about it whilst laughing in our faces.

All that said, since continuing to protest won’t seem to make them budge, I won’t hold the best simracing community the internet has to offer to closed anymore. When I took over top position, I did it with two objectives in mind: making this community better for everybody, and making it best overall. Although it’ll be harder to do that without API access and third party apps, I still intend on following through on those, especially considering that frankly, there’s no better alternative. I mean, then again, I think my HTML is getting a lot better.

Rant over. Welcome back, everyone. Whether you be a driver on Xbox, PlayStation, Mac, Linux, SteamOS, or of course Windows; thank you for being one of the spokes on the hub of the simracing community.

Announcement Megathread - Extra Game Keys

Due to people potentially having a large amount of excess keys they would like to giveaway with the recent Humble sale, we've set up this thread to gather them. No selling, just giveaways

Note: Do not share the keys in a machine readable format. Add a space, type out number using letters, use the pilot alphabet, etc. We want them to go to humans, not robots. Key owners can also ask people to dm them

Edit: I know codes are going quick, but in the stats I can see there's a lot of people watching the thread. Still, every effort to avoid bots is welcome.

Edit 2: How to make sure a human gets the code. A guide:

  • Ask for DMs (and delete the comment as soon as they're gone, because otherwise you're gonna wake up to a full inbox)
  • Paste links to eg. gist or pastebin so normal people need to click them.
  • Use paint and art skills
  • sending keys via DM to the first commenter
  • Do whatever the hell /u/glasschool did here

Announcement r/simracing will go dark for at least the next 48 hours

Hey r/simracing,

I’m sure at this point everybody has heard of Reddit’s incoming API changes, in case not, this infographic is the best TL;DR. In protest of these changes r/simracing will go dark for at least 48 hours. First the submissions will be restricted and not later than 00:00 UTC the subreddit will go private.

The moderator team is fully in favor of this blackout and the reaction to u/AlgotB’s post here on the sub also made it clear where the community stands on this issue.

However the subreddit going dark does not mean that the community is disappearing for that time. We’re in the process of setting up a Discord server as a refuge for the duration of the blackout.

See you soon over there

Hugs,

the mod team

Announcement "What would you tell yourself if you could go back in time and give yourself advice when you were first getting into simracing" - r/simracing's first Reddit Talk. Today at 4PM GMT.

Hey everyone,

Today we will host r/simracing's first Reddit Talk. Reddit Talk is a new feature that allows communities to have live audio discussions. Earlier this week we've hosted an audio AMA style Talk over at r/Formula1 and it was huge success, so we will try to experiment with it here on r/simracing as well.

Today's Talk will not be an audio AMA, just a casual community discussion. So if you want to share, comment on something somebody else said, or just say hi, “raise your hand” using the hand button in your UI and the hosts will bring you up a few at a time to speak.

Speaking of hosts, a huge thank you to u/me_go_vroom who has offered to take on the challenge of hosting our first Talk.

Today we’re talking live about advice to newbies: what are your lessons learned over your time simracing, and what would you tell yourself if you could go back in time and give yourself advice when you were first getting into it?

The talk will start at 4PM GMT (March 25th) and will end around 5PM GMT. If you won't be able to join the dicussion live feel free to share your thoughts here in the comments.
