Update Post ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ•Š๏ธUpdate๐Ÿ•Š๏ธWe were unable to rescue some yesterday. They are shown below. Rest well little ones. Please keep comments to this post only out of respect for those lost & the communities feelings on this sensitive matter. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿค๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

As hard as we try to find rescues to save these kittens & cats it can be nearly impossible when they are all full now. So with very few adoptions there are little to no spaces opening for these poor cats. Unfortunately yesterday was another very sad day for the rescue teams. We even lost very young kittens. Neptune was only weeks old and Pryce only a few months. Not that it matters which ones or how old, none of them deserved this cruel fate. Brighton Talulla Payden & Zuriโ€ฆ were all worth saving! We just didnโ€™t find rescues open. Itโ€™s heartbreaking. We need to start finding homes for those in rescues now or it will only get worse. Thereโ€™s whole families listed now that we have nowhere to place. Itโ€™s getting worse and worse, but will still try our best to help them.

I know that a lot of people will be very upset and disappointed by this, as all of these cats were precious and deserving of love. Some in particular, such as Zuri and Brighton, captured many peopleโ€™s heart and were beloved by the r/rescuecats community.

Sadly space is at an absolute premium and we have very little say over who the rescues do and donโ€™t take. So even if a cat is particularly well loved by the community or indeed ourselves (as if often the case!), they make the final decision, based on practical factors like the space they have available, how easily they can rehome it, health concerns, the catโ€™s temperament, compatibility with other cats, etc.

It can be extremely disappointing and upsetting to see a cat you love be overlooked, and i cried many tears over all of these lost souls, Brighton and Zuri especially, but the rescues are the ones taking on the responsibility for looking after and ultimately rehoming the cats. They know what their adopters are looking for, they know the other cats they have in, the health, temperament and compatibility of each cat. They also have an idea of how well each cat will do in captivity. And this may be for several months. Some cats just shut down and donโ€™t cope with this at all, and the rescues know this. All of these factors play into their decisions. And itโ€™s not fair on anyone for a cat to linger in rescue for months on end, utterly miserable in a foster pen, and the rescue unable to do anything for the other Devore cats needing out until they find a home for this one. Sadly, as much as it breaks our hearts, they have to make some really difficult decisions. Devore has forced them into choosing who lives and who dies, and itโ€™s completely unfair for everyone, especially the cats.

Iโ€™m sure people will be disappointed and deeply saddened by the loss of these cats. We are too ๐Ÿ˜” Thank you all very much for supporting them so much, it is really heartwarming to see and it enabled the lives that were saved yesterday to get to safety. Iโ€™m sorry there was nowhere for these 6 little souls to go ๐Ÿ˜” RIP babies, you were loved and you mattered.

Yes fosters help but we need these cats ADOPTED! More than anything else, we need to clear out our rescues. They are FULL of Devore adult cats now with no way to open up more space for intake. We canโ€™t keep pulling more and more adult cats out without a logical solution. At this point more will die from lack of rescue space than anything else. Please continue this discussion on the new post.

Who is bringing these cats in? Are these street cats that people just trapped or cats that humans owned?

Itโ€™s trappers that are possibly paid by the city and the shelter and property management in Mobile home parks and apartment complexes mostly u/Cassius_O has driven by some of the areas where many have been trapped so she might have more insight on the situation.

Ugh. Why can't they just leave the cats alone. I truly don't understand. They are natural pest control and stay out of people's ways. Poor babies. My heart hurts for them.

Is there anyway we can donate to add more kennels to the Devore shelter or other rescues ?

I know that u/cassius_o has been campaigning for Devore to get a bigger cat area, because they have expanded their remit - by taking in the overflow instead of Riverside - but they have not expanded their capacity to reflect this rise in numbers. Instead theyโ€™re just euthanising more ๐Ÿ˜” So there may be some way of joining the campaign there.

In terms of the rescues, I know some of them do buy pen things for cats and potentially one of them is fundraising for that at the moment? u/monkittyruccia22?

The main thing the rescues need is more people to foster. But I get that very few of us here actually live in SoCal, so itโ€™s not possible. Hopefully Cass and Mon can advise on ways to help from afar ๐Ÿ™ Thank you for asking, itโ€™s a great idea ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ–ค

Hello, if you would like to write a comment to the board of supervisors who oversee the public health department who oversee Devore you could write a simple email and it would sayโ€ฆ. โ€œSpace is too tight for the cats at Devore Animal Shelter. The dogs get above 85%+ of the real estate at the shelter and the cats get a very nominal amount. Itโ€™s imperative that another modular structure be added, there is room by the fence by staff parking. This will give the rescues a little more time to make exit plans. As it stands most cats have to cycle thru there in 7 days which is very fast. This needs to be done as we wait for the Bloomington shelter to be built.โ€

You would email this between Monday July 8th at 12noon PST to maybe 8am Tuesday July 9th.

Meetings are every other Tuesday. They get permanently archived and recorded. Donโ€™t state where you live. Just your name. Here are the email addresses.

Public comments to the board of supervisors can be sent every other Tuesday before their meeting. BoardMeetingComments@cob.sbcounty.gov
