Hey im new here been a rally fan forever. I just bought this imported right hand drive toyota wagon thing.
Im gonna build it into a dedicated rallycross car. But i cant seem to find any "rally" specific scca rulebook or classification info.
If anyone would be so kind to point me the in the right direction.
Also if anyone has any good tips or opinions on what would be the best route to go for this car i would love to hear it.
"Fyi Background im used to west coast desert racing where you could easily qualify for multiple classes and your decision mattered alot if you were gonna be remotely competitive" 😂 thats mostly what i mean by class opinion
I have a multiple sided question regarding beginner rallycross cars. To start, I currently daily drive a 1990 Mazda Miata, which is currently setup for street/track driving. I've been considering getting a new daily on the account that the Miata probably isn't the safest daily (front airbag needs to be replaced and everything driving around me is a lifted F150 or large SUV). Most of the time people just don't see me on the road.
I'm also taking this opportunity to get an entry level rallycross car. I've wanted to get into rallycross for a while now, but didn't have a reason to get a whole new car. I know I can rallycross the Miata, but it's purpose built now for the HPDE track days, which I do a couple times a year. All in all, my goal is to find an entry level rallycross car that has modern safety features (front, rear, and side airbags, etc.).
So far, my choices are as follows:
2008-13 Subaru Impreza Hatchback
I like the extra room in the back on the Hatchback for day to day use
2008-13 Subaru Impreza WRX Hatchback
2013-2020 Subaru BR-Z / Scion FR-S
I'm currently leaning towards the 2008-13 base Impreza as I've heard a non-WRX model is a good place to start in the sport. I also feel like the 265hp of the WRX is a bit overwhelming for me considering I'm use to about 100hp haha. I haven't seen many people use this 3rd generation Impreza in the first place, so I'm not sure if it's the best choice. If daily driving safety wasn't a concern I'd get a 2007 Impreza (Hawkeye), but it's kind of the whole reason behind the purchase (07 lacks in safety features). The rallycross aspect is a fun bonus.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any input on this topic! I know it's probably not a typical topic for rallycross, but I wasn't finding much online to help make my decision.
I made a post informing other forums about this but I don't think they were race oriented, I would get replies and private messages spouting bullshit some kid read off a wiki page.
I somehow picked up heel toeing with my left foot, and it feels so natural to bring my heel down on the clutch, is it really as bad as I am making the habit out to be, or just like being a goofy snowboarder, am I just a goofy heel toe user?
Example, I do lots of left foot braking during my 10/10ths giving it my all, in moments where I need to decelerate hard/downshift for a tight corner, I'll have my foot on the accelerator, HARD brake->into regressive, car is digging in with the front end and it turns in nicely, as I'm doing this, I simultaneously bring my heel over the clucth, depress it, downshift into 2 or 3 depending on the corner, then I'm off.
I feel like this has a potential to fuck up my shifts if I don't fully depress the clutch when going all out, this hasn't happened yet, but it is still my fear.
Anyone else seen or heard of someone doing this, and did they have to break the habit to improve because I honestly get better times slightly when I do this as opposed to the "correct" heel toe
Edit: I am also rev matching, I'm not sure why I didn't put that in my explanation of steps I do, probably because I find it hard to spell out in slow motion my step by step when I drive sometimes, it almost feels like my body knows what to do when my mind doesn't.
Where can I drive on the ice with studded (7-8mm) tires in Canada, especially from Minnesota or Michigan side.
I don’t need professional rally, just want any small event on the ice.
(43yrM that poorly livestreams & makes shitty YT videos that people dont watch, lol, yes I would film all of this idea as much as I can )
I absolutely love Rallycross. Ken Block & Travis Pastrana are my heros / idols (what ever), I love my simracing Rallycross, I suck at all other racing but ok at RC ( I also have a deadly announcer voice, Monster truck madness type, that gets people hyped in VC). I have all the games that offer rallycross (turned to iracing to get a challenge) I also love doing gymkhana in BeamNG and drifting around a city or coming up with "Ken Block Lines". Recently I was saving up some $ to upgrade my simracing stuff to emulate a real car more, I wanted resistance and feeling, but then realized/found out that Dirtfish is 4 hours away from my house, in Vancouver Canada. I always thought it was east coast.
***BACK STORY ON ME****I used to be a person who wanted to be a professional musician, spend hours and hours huffing those farts, so my dedication / how fast I want things to move or an idea to progress, is quite fast, I obsess over ideas & what is the next step to get to where I want to be, I get bothered by time that isnt getting me forward towards my idea. I am fully on board with this pipe dream, lol ****
I didn't know a top notch driving school was so close to me, it changed my whole view on my hobby/passion. I didnt realize REAL racing is actually "some what" within grasp, if I just huck it. I want to go all in!
( I want to go to dirtfish, to see if I can even drive, huck, listen to advice and display it soon after learning it but also see if I can even handle it / do it, before wasting more money on this idea)
I started my research, but didnt want to deep dive (so I didn't get too hyped on an idea, if I couldn't get to step 2). **Once again, I don't know anything about vehicles or racing, so don't judge me on my choices of things, I just like what I like, till Im told why it sucks, lol & I don't have people to turn to. I bought a 2014 f150, its freaking sic, with tow pack -that can tow a small its car, its good, all is fine, about to spend the money on its first full work on ( it was ok'd to buy by our family mechanic of 30 years, hence why I got it). Making sure the truck is ok for an adventure to dirtfish, Id go up to places or "if there was events" up north, but I need better tires, cuz Im not messing about with stuff.. (my tires are fine, but not what I trust going up there atm)
So, this is where I am at.... What am I do during this "off season"..
there are no races or driving events going on near me, I learned that "rallycross, autocross & time trial things (it has a name but idk atm) all the basic racing that is technically "within my grasp" Drift and other stuff that need High end crap that I don't have the money for, lol, be cool to see if I could do those things, but they seem way too out of reality . Idk atm if there are any car meet ups going on in the next little while ( I want to get into the "car culture" and meet people with similar ideas or just be in the places to learn, Im fun and awesome - I have no problem meeting or talking to people) The "going to places where car people will be" is a constant search, but I also researched where local "racing cloths" are, found a place, seems quality, so I want to take an adventure out to them and ask these same questions, "am I on a ok path" "what are your thoughts, since your in the culture" " where should I look " " huh " " Mommy, I need help" " I would love some advice on my quest to race a car"
My main thing is, wtf am I to do this winter, while I save up money for a trailer & small car for next season..
I just want to race & have fun. But in all honesty, F**k that, I wana RACE, I want to go fast, huck it, smell the mud, get hurt, learn stuff, cry & smile, meet cool people... I want to get to Nitrocross or for some freak fluke epic roll of the dice that will never ever happen, WRC.. as a driver, I have it in me, I will dedicate time and soul, Ill bleed. (if I find out I can do it, lol,(----- spends money--- finds out the motion of car makes him sick, lol, cant drive-- Dreams Crushed, lol ).. But even if I could just go to watch irl, Id lose my shit, lol.
even after writing this, I AM HYPED.. I think about this idea and I get jazzed up...
So, besides that this is a "wild idea" / "#wonthappen"... any thought on my next steps ?
Thanks for the advice, hate, love, laughing at me, taking the time to read.
I had bought a car to make auto cross ready but my heart really wants to go the direction of rally. The car I got is a 1986 2dr Golf that I had picked up that has been sitting for years but after realizing how good of shape it’s in I’d honestly feel bad making it a race car since there’s not a ton around in this good of shape with low miles. I was considering selling it and getting an old 80’s Audi to do rally cross with. Or should I keep it and buy the Audi and burn my money on both sports?
I thought for sure there would be some kind of snow autosport near Tahoe or the CA Sierra range in general, but I can't find anything. Does anybody know of some place for my friend and I to whip around his GR Corolla and my Outback LL Bean? Thanks for the help, Rally is something I've always admired and I'd really like to give it a try.
I've found a few fiberglass lamp pods, but they're all between 2 and 4 grand. I'm about to just buy a couple cheap fake hood scoops and stick some light bars in them.
Does anyone know of a place to buy a vintage style round lamp pod that won't cost more than my car did?
If you're thinking about competing in motorsports for the first time, but not sure what type of competition to start with - autocross, time-attack, rally cross, go-karting, etc. - here are my 2 cents.
Rallycross is for sure the best type of motorsport competition to start with.
Wide variety of surfaces force drivers to learn great car control from the get-go.
You don't need an expensive car to get going.
Short tracks force drivers to be perfect and give their absolute best, because one mistake will cost you a lot.
From experience, I find that starting a rallycross run can be more stressful (in a good way) than starting a real rally stage, because on a rally stage you can always make up for mistakes later - this makes rallycross a great psychological training for any competition.
Events can run in any season.
Driving skills will help in challenging driving situations in real life.
Rallycross is pretty safe because the speeds are low, but still super fun because the surface is slippery and uneven.
i just discovered rally cross today and found a local org that hosts events. is there any recommended work i should do on my miata before taking it to an event, aside from a rollbar? my car is mainly set up as a canyon carver but rally cross looks like a blast so thought it’d be fun to try with a miata
Hey yall, been into rally for a while and I’ve seen rallycross around and content for it but never been to an event or participated. Starting to come around and realize it may be the best entry to the sport I like so much. So is there any groups in Michigan or reddits for a group in Michigan/events people are aware of I can join in for to get some more info? Maybe even northern Indiana like Elkhart area?
I hear this sentiment often where you should have minimal steering input to be a good driver; and then along with this sentiment they’ll provide an example video with Karts, Rally Cars, or F1 cars, and what I feel like isn’t really accurate is that they always fail to recognize that these vehicles often have low steering ratios so the input can be less. Does anyone have an example of this technique that uses stock steering set ups?
After crawling under my 08 WRX hatch, I was grabbing the rear sway bar and it felt like the bushings may be on their way out, not to mention the rust and paint peeling. I’ve already been looking into new struts/coils, but I’m now thinking maybe some new sway bars wouldn’t hurt. But, for Rallycross, should I run a thicker/stiffer sway bar, or something with more give? I’d assume a thicker sway bar would be beneficial, as the car would resist body roll without losing too much suspension travel (if any). I’m already in Mod All, so anything goes really.
