question Fossify Messages Vs Google Messages?
So Ik talking via SMS is not safe as it isn't E2EE but I have heard if RCS is enabled on both side then it is E2EE(IG Google supports RCS feature), Google company itself being a privacy nightmare, can't I just use it for simple OTPs for login by making sure it doesn't have any internet access to transfer my data. I am considering this because I really like Google's material you design and I always consider FOSS apps which have material you design so give me your opinion On this

question how does a website remember i used it?
i used a website that had a token system and when you ran out of tokens you needed to buy more, but you didnt need to create an account or sign in for it, and clearing cookies and all that wasnt able to make the website forget i had used it and still told me "i have used all the free tokens" so id thought id ask here if anyone knew like where that data is stored or is it just tracking every computer that uses it. i tried using operas VPN in case it was off of ip or something but like im using a free vpn so who knows if that is even changing my ip

question Looking for Mull replacement
Since it will be discontinued I actually don't know much about tech, I usually just make research and ended up with Mull as the most secure/private browser. It seems like Fennec is not as good, but can it get better by tweaking options/copying the Mull settings? Or maybe there is a more out of the box debloated/secure option?

discussion Youtube is recommending me videos based on the activity of someone else in the household. How is this not massive privacy breach?
I'm signed into my own account, I use a VPN most of the time, not always, and I'm now getting video recommendations for things I wouldn't look at, that are based on the things that someone else in the household looks at.
There is no device sharing, the only point of commonality is using the same network, sometimes.
Why is Youtube doing this?
How is this not a massive privacy breach?
What if someone starts looking at porn? Will it be recommended to others?
Does this happen for other websites like Reddit and Amazon?

discussion how do you deal with multiple reddit profiles for privacy but also wanting to consolidate some of your stuff to one account for accessibility?
i have a bunch of accounts, but lately, i feel like i kind of want to consolidate some data to one account. i figured, this one had a word and digits that felt relatively good for like, enough digits where its not like i could accidentally say the name of my reddit account to my therapist (because i feel like maybe that happened once in the past years ago) or something to that effect, like how a phone number is enough digits where you don't usually remember it off the top of your head. but anyway, despite that, shouldn't reddit have a way to create a sub-account so that people can do stuff like "chat/dating" related activities in a sub account instead of a complete separate account? or not just "chat/dating", but literally dozens or even *hundreds* of topics that could be considered "embarrasing". things related to medical, things related to relationships, self improvement, stomach issues, medications, etc...the list goes on. after all, i still want notifications related to that stuff from my main account, but i wouldn't necessarily want that content in my history. but i guess i don't have a choice? maybe this post should be more like for theory of reddit, but i figured that privacy makes sense too. i don't know, what do you all think.

discussion Forking Mull: Help Wanted!
Hey everyone,
As you might know, the Mull browser along with the whole DivestOS project have been discontinued. I’ve been using Mull for the past six months and was honestly shocked to hear it won’t be maintained anymore. It’s such a great browser, and I feel like it’d be a waste to let it just die.
So, I’m thinking about forking it to keep it alive. Of course, this isn’t something I can pull off alone—it’s going to take a lot of time, effort, and the right skills. That’s why I’m looking for others who care about this project and want to help out. If you’re interested, leave a commemt!
And hey, Merry Christmas!

question I live in California. Can I request my data from Flock Safety license plate cameras?
I was thinking about this for a bit and am wondering if because Flock Safety is a private company, can I request the data that they have on me due to the California Consumer Privacy Act or similar. Has anyone tried to do this? I think this could be an interesting point as they really are trying to operate much how the police would operate with data of similar importance, but are a private company.
Yes they sell their data to police departments and HOAs etc, but they still store the data, so I would think they should be held to the same laws as all of the other companies in California. Has anyone tried to do this in the past? I am mostly just curious about if you can actually do this and how much they collect as I now see >10 cameras of theirs just on my commute to/from home.

software How to have end-to-end client side encryption for my drive ?
Hi,
I am looking to improve my privacy for my cloud drive. For this, I want to have end-to-end encryption with my cloud drive. Ready to use solutions like Proton Drive are too expensive.
I plan on getting a cloud drive service that is not encrypted but supports WebDAV, like Shadow Drive.
Then, I would like to use third party apps for my Windows PC and Android phone to sync files, that would also encrypt and decrypt files.
What can you recommend me for this ?
So far I was able to find Cryptomator but it is not a cloud client, it only encrypts files.
Is there better options ?
Thanks in advance for any answer.
EDIT : I am trying rclone but can't mount anything on Windows. Here is a post about it if you step by : https://forum.rclone.org/t/can-not-mount-anywhere-on-windows-drive-letter-or-folder/49208

question Which tracker blocking options do I choose for Mozilla and safari?
So I figure it's not a good idea to have multiple tracker blockers at once. Since they might interfere with each other. However, I'm not sure which ones to use for my safari and Mozilla browsers, since I have multiple options
The only other extensions I have for both browsers are for ad blocking: UblockO for Mozilla and Wipr 2 for safari
Options that I have:
Safari
- Turn on the "prevent cross site tracking" option in settings for safari
- NordVPN block tracking option
- Bitdefender "traffic light" tracker blocker extension turned on
Mozilla
- Turn on "strict" settings in privacy/security settings for browser
- NordVPN block tracking option
- Bitdefender "traffic light" tracker blocker extension turned on
Could use some insight on what to use. For each browser
sorry if this is a noob question I'm still learning :/

question Weird data broker Socure: correcting and interpreting my data?
I wanted to share my experience requesting my data from the shadowy data broker Socure. You can request your data and read about their process here: Data Protection Rights Request Form - Socure Inc.
This might be overly niche, but I can't find much of anything specific out there so I figured it might be helpful.
I could also use your help. Context is below, but here are my questions:
- Is there anyone out there who has requested their data, corrected it, or worked with this data in their job?
- Do you know how to correct bad data? I didn't see anything explicit on their site about that, but they seem to be set up to comply with the CCPA and similar laws so I think they probably would let me depending on what state I'm in?
- Do you have any advice on how to interpret this report? It came in multiple unlabeled files. The contents of most files seem self-explanatory, but a lot of the records are unlabeled. For example, I see an address I've never heard of in one of the files, but it's in a separate file with a bunch of addresses. So maybe they aren't saying it's my address, maybe they are saying it's the address of someone I did business with or something. I'm really not sure.
i pretty much asked these same questions to Socure today, along with some others.
So here is my story:
- I went to that link above to request my report.
- I got an email back saying that I should expect a selfie verification text message within 24 hours.
- I got that text message and passed selfie verification pretty easily.
- This is notable because I just failed some kind of Socure check that also involved selfie verification. This was with a bank. That fail was the reason I requested my report.
- Then I got another email saying that I would get my report within 45 days of the original request.
- But I actually got it about 15 weeks after the request instead of 45. Hell yeah! Thanks to the folks working my case.
Here's what was in my report:
- They said that they might redact some things, but I didn't see anything redacted.
- They gave me a link to a secure portal where I could download an encrypted zip file. The filename of the zip file was my initials, and it contained 5 JSON files called 0.json, 1.json and so on.
- Each json file contained a number of records.
- One was a list of IP addresses. It seemed legit based on the recent locations, but I didn't check them all.
- Two were pretty self-explanatory and looked like generic identity info, like addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, SSN, driver's license, etc. I'm not sure why there were two. These included some incorrect name and address information that I removed from ChexSystems by dispute earlier this year.
- One was similar but had a way longer list of addresses that I've never heard of, except for one wrong address which I removed from ChexSystems by dispute earlier this year. This is the one I would like to correct.
- One was a weird file which I reproduce below. Does anyone have any idea what this one might be?

question Is there a private GPT that's built upon ChatGPT
I really like ChatGPT, i tried all other major AI bots and tbh none of them is even close to chatgpt, at least in my opinion. But i really don't feel private whenever i use it, is there a privacy layer that i can use to encrypt my data? Preferably if it's easy to use cross devices. Thanks!

software Is self-hosted Open-WebUI with cloud-based LLM server a good idea?
I have a Synology at home which could easily run Open-WebUI but cannot run a LLM. I thought about buying a used Mac M1 to run Ollama and use it to power the inference but I would like to simplify the process as much as possible. My goal is to own my data and be able use the power of AI from anywhere. As far as I am concern, LLM frameworks like VLLM or Ollama doesn't store anything other than models. Would this be a good idea? Any recommended services for these cloud-based open-sourced LLM providers?

question Comparison of the combinations of encryption algorithms security
How much is it harder to hack file encrypted with combination of Aes Twofish and Serpent algorithms than the file defended with one of the following combinations:
- Aes Twofish
- Kuznyechik Twofish
- Kuznyechik Aes
- Serpent Aes
- Twofish Serpent. Writing "hack" I mean to open the file without initial information about password.
The matter is. I want to encrypt in secure way. But speed is important also.

discussion What apps or services would you include on a minimalist/privacy-focused cell phone?
Cell phones are embedded in our society now to the point that not having one excludes an individual from a wide swath of services, or at least makes using them very difficult. There was some news about a "dumb phone" recently though I can't remember exactly what it was about, but I like the idea of it - only include the bare essentials of cell phones but include a few of the new features that makes great (good cameras, music, navigation?, etc.)
So, to the privacy-minded community: what apps, services, or features would you want to see on a "dumb phone" that would maximize privacy while balancing the benefits of modern cellular devices? I know some of you wizards have like 4 devices for different purposes but let's keep the general public in mind. People like music listening.

question Is there a secure way to empty the Trash on Mac OS?
I’m looking for a method to securely delete files from the Trash on Mac OS. On Windows, there are external programs that encrypt files before deleting them, ensuring they can’t be recovered. Are there similar tools for Mac OS that ensure that the data are securely erased?

software Plebbit is peer-to-peer adminles, serverless decentralized social media platform built on IPFS, can't be censored or down.
github.comPlebbit is the future of all social media platforms , peer-to-peer , serverless, decentralized.. They offer different UIs. Seedit is old Reddit, Plebchan which is 4chan also have a newReddit frontend. They intend to have an app, internet archive, a Facebook and Twitter frontend too.
Seedit only hosts text. Images from google and other sites can be linked/embedded in posts. This fixes the issue of hosting any nefarious content.
This project was created due to wanting to give control of communication and data back to the people.
if it goes against the protocol principles, people can fork it.
