I’m a beginner! Help me learn

Hey guys, I’m looking for a way to learn how to use two poi at once, unfortunately I think I need to get some shorter silks but I can practice without them for now!

Ps this video was taken of me at electric forest this past year :))

Do any of you have experience using 75”silk? If you want to use two silks at once what length do you usually go to? (53”?) (Are larger silks make for only using one?)

Personally, I'd ditch the silks for now and suggest getting a pair of sock poi or even making some.

Start out by getting comfortable with your planes and directions and learn the terminology as it will help you in the long run. There are tons of good tutorials by playpoi on YouTube.

rice filled socks work, or tennis balls (though the weight sucks, tennis balls are light)... my first poi were tennis balls I half-filled filled with sand xD

I mean first "built" set (otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned filling them with sand specifically for weight), glowsticks are where I learned poi existed xD

I learned everything with glowsticks, then socks with tennis balls!

That was long before contact POI though.

Try snooker balls.

I also suggest rice in socks with a simple knot. I prefer a third of a cup in each. Then videos are helpful if you want fundamentals. After that it's mostly self directed play. Props are props, flow is flow, there's variety in both aspects. Different combinations are more or less helpful depending on what ideas or feels you're exploring.

Get some practice poi without the flags. Practice by yourself with music you enjoy until you have some basic weaves down and can keep planes well. I think it's better to spin where nobody is watching you to really feel comfortable in learning. There's lots of good tutorials on YouTube. Once you really have a handle on a lot of the fundamentals start spinning with other people to push your creativity and skills!

Of course then you'll need some fire poi :)

Check YouTube for tutorials! The amount of free, robust, online learning content for poi is unbelievable and it’s how I learned. “Top 5 beginner moves Drex factor” is a great place to start.

Just feel your flow and play, if there's a specific move you can look it up on yt, but imo flow is more important than moves and you find that through play

Get/make some sock poi. For instructions go to a local flow group or look up Drexfactor on YT.
