Spinning poi while unable to stand

Hey spinners :)

As I mentioned in the title, I’m currently recovering from surgery for a thrice broken ankle. Ow. I had surgery exactly three weeks ago, and for another three weeks, I won’t be allowed to put any weight on it— that means no standing.

One of the first things I thought when I fell and broke my ankle was “aw crap. I’m probably not gonna be able to spin for a really long time,” so needless to say, spinning is a really important part of my life and the three weeks I’ve now gone without it have kind of sucked.

I’ve been trying some stuff while sitting down but it’s been hard. All I can really do is over the shoulders stuff and practicing more intricate tech like isos and gunslingers.

Has anyone else been limited in their spinning due to injury (whether it’s ankle related or not)? How did you deal with it, and what alternatives did you come up with to keep spinning while incapacitated?

Gear Discussion My review of OrbPoi Pro LED Contact Poi by UltraPoi

I recently switched from Podpoi v2 (Smithy Rope) to OrbPoi Pro. I've been playing with them for over a month, and here's my review:

Things I noticed:

  • They feel significantly heavier (130g vs. 185g), and the size of the poi head is noticeably larger as well (66mm vs. 97mm in diameter).
  • The leash is thicker (9.525 mm) and stiffer.
  • The knob is also heavier (23g).

Good things:

  • Due to the thicker rope, heavier poi heads, and heavier knob, tricks involving isolations and throws are easier to learn. Like many others, I bought Podpoi v2 (Smithy Rope) as my first-ever LED poi, so learning isolations and throws was more challenging for me. I wouldn’t recommend Podpoi to beginners.
  • The heavier heads help keep my spinning pace slower, which I really like. With Podpoi, I developed a habit of spinning too fast and occasionally hurting my fingers as a result.
  • You can do contact rolls, which weren’t possible with the oval design of Podpoi.
  • Rope doesn't tangle much.
  • The LED handles make catching the poi in the dark much easier and also add another layer to visual appeal.

Not-so-good things:

  • There’s no kinetic sensor to change colors.
  • The battery doesn’t last as long.
  • The LEDs are not as bright as Podpoi’s.
  • The heavier heads can tire out my shoulders after a while. I wish they were a bit lighter (~160g would be ideal).
  • The larger poi heads take up more space in my bag, which is a bit inconvenient (and adds a noticeable bump when carrying them around). Podpoi is much more portable.

Let's talk about the Issues:

  • Understanding and setting LED color modes is not straightforward and requires too many clicks. For example, it’s not possible to set a specific default color, such as “yellow ribbon,” whenever I turn on LEDs. On top of that, I found that some colors don’t match the modes shown in the instruction booklet (yellow [color mode #2] is showing up green), which makes the process even more frustrating. I suspect the LED chip might be buggy. If you also own OrbPoi Pro, I’d love to hear about your experience with the LED color modes.
  • I saw posts about OrbPoi Pro LEDs suddenly stopping, but I thought it wouldn’t happen to me. Well, guess what—it did. One of the knob handles stopped working. UltraPoi offers a warranty, but unfortunately, I live on the other side of the world, so shipping it back wasn’t feasible. I decided to fix it myself. After investigating the knob chip, I discovered that one of the battery wires had disconnected from the chip, so I had to solder it back on. It’s working fine now, but it was an unexpected hassle.

Bottom Line:

Despite the LED-related annoyances, the OrbPoi Pro is still my go-to poi. I absolutely enjoy the thicker rope and heavier heads, and I wish I’d had them from the start. When I was deciding on an upgrade from Podpoi, I also considered Flowmoja Poi (which uses the Podpoi capsule but features a sphere head and thicker rope). However, I ultimately chose OrbPoi because of the LED knob handles. If anyone owns Flowmoja poi, I would love to hear about your experience.

Progress Video 2nd burn in 7 years since my Dx of CRPS. Not too shabby for a 35 yr old mama?

Hey there flow friends!

Sorry in advance for my damn headband & recording right next to my speaker. 😂

I feel like such a beginner since my diagnosis of CRPS.
I’m super restricted with my right hand, arm, and shoulder —as I’m sure you can tell by video.

Muscle memory is my favorite!

[I was super hesitant to post this cause I am so self conscious. But, I am grateful and thankful for the fact that I can still DO IT!!!]

Fire poi will always remain a part of me, no matter what happens. It’s my one true love!

I hope that you enjoy my rusty video :))

P.S. —I recently did an orbit behind my back by accident... is there a name for that?!

TYI!

❤️ Love & Light ❤️

Gear Discussion I dream of Fire.

Hey guys, I have a crazy flow project idea, slightly risky, and involves fire! I'm doing research now but also would love to connect with a seasoned fire-spinner over a video chat one evening to talk all things existing fire-spinning and my crazy idea. Would anyone be interested or know anyone who would? If this works out, it would be the first of its kind!

Scared of contact poi

Hey everyone. Newbie here (well, newbie to contact poi). I've been spinning poi for several months on and off. The latest trick I learned was behind the back weaves. I recently transitioned from sock poi to contact poi, but I'm genuinely scared to use them lol. I already got hit in the jaw, and I find myself spinning slowly and cautiously and returning to my sock poi because it's just not fun spinning with that lingering fear. Any tips on how to overcome the fear of getting hit in the face by a heavy ball?

I’m a beginner! Help me learn

Hey guys, I’m looking for a way to learn how to use two poi at once, unfortunately I think I need to get some shorter silks but I can practice without them for now!

Ps this video was taken of me at electric forest this past year :))

Do any of you have experience using 75”silk? If you want to use two silks at once what length do you usually go to? (53”?) (Are larger silks make for only using one?)

Fund the Flow Arts Seed Fund grants - applications due December 31

Fund the Flow Arts - a US-based 501c3 non profit - has announced that it's giving away $50,000 in Seed Fund grants, and more in Community Development Investments for established projects. Applications are due by December 31, 2024.

The first Seed Fund grants were released in 2012, and again in 2016, and have helped fund a wide range of projects from community flowjams, to technology that generates music from staffs, to Poi and Aging research, web resources for injury prevention, flow arts showcases and more. Many of these projects are still ongoing or available as online resources. Last year's cycle gave out almost $80k in grant money! Check out last year's recipients here.

Tiers 1-3 - $1k-10k Seed Fund grants: The current cycle is focused on teaching/outreach/education resource flow arts projects. Application deadline is 31 December 2024. > Guidelines, application forms and details here.

Community Development Investments - $10-20k grants: In order to be eligible for this grant, the project or activity must already be underway and be able to demonstrate community engagement, momentum, and sound management. CDI Guidelines and details here.

For this round, grants are available to recipients who can legally work in the US. FFA hopes to support international projects in future rounds. Exceptions can be made if your project is sponsored by a US-based institution or will have benefits that will be shared around the world, like research projects with publishable results, or resources that can be shared worldwide.

You can check out the grant proposal guidelines and access the application forms on the FFA site.

POI Fatigue

Hello. Does anyone ever get overwhelming fatigue/exhaustion from POI? I usually get it from WFH on screen all day. To a point where it’s nearly debilitating and I have to nap on the spot. Yesterday it happened while on a long drive. It was a little scary! Any info or stories would be appreciated. Ty in advance.

Do you think people will find it odd I enjoy using just one poi?

I’m fairly new to flowing, I like to figure out how to use things with my own intuition first so I haven’t watched any tutorials. I like to practice in complete privacy and my room is small so I started flowing with just one poi but have found I enjoy it much more and I’ve been having fun making my own moves with it. I want to poi at raves and events but for some reason I’m nervous people will find it odd I only am using the one lol
