Older games or indies.

Few AAA from ~2020 onwards will be playable at 1080p even on the lowest settings (smooth 30fps). You'll have to drop down to 720p and maybe even use FSR, but the experience will be far from pleasant. Even earlier titles will struggle, GT 1030 is from 2016 (same as your CPU) and meant for office work. What you've bought is a repurposed office PC and the price reflects that (assuming you paid £200, £400 is a rip-off).

Basically, good graphics = probably not for this PC. Pixel art indies, anything from early 2010s or 2000s, sure.

You can always look up "<game name> GT 1030" on Youtube and you'll see videos with the settings and framerate shown.

If you want specific suggestions, narrow it down to genre. Otherwise consider Deus Ex (original and Human Revolution), Factorio, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Doom 2016, Stardew Valley, Mount & Blade Warband, Borderlands, Dishonored.

For £400 you're really limited to the second hand market. I can't give you specific parts because there are way too many combinations and the prices will be all over the place, so you'll have to do some research yourself.

Around a GTX 980 level of performance is reasonable for £400 (I think). Go here and look at the chart, it will show you how other cards stack up against a 980, you basically want something that's at least 100%, the higher the better.

As for the CPU, a rule of thumb is that the first digit in Intel's CPU number is the last digit of the year of release minus 1. So an i5-6600K, that's 6 - 1 = 5, which is 2015. i5-8600K would be 2017, and so on. In the same year, higher number = better. For AMD, only consider Ryzen CPUs as their older stuff (FX series) is very bad.

"Gaming" PC flippers on Ebay have a habit of using very old Intels (2000 and 3000 series) or AMD FX which you really don't want. Anything older than 6000 series is simply not enough for gaming in current year.

If second hand is out of the question, a PC with the 5600G APU is the closest you can get, and while you can build one for £400, prebuilts will be priced higher. It's anything between 10-100% faster than a 1030, very game dependent. You could also slot in a GPU later and get a huge improvement, either second hand or a budget card like RTX 3050 or RX 6500.

£600 can get you a solid entry-level machine that will be able to play anything, even at medium-ish settings, and while I'm aware that's a lot over your budget, consider saving up and building it when you're able.

Have you watched any guides? It is not very difficult, when done step-by-step and consulting a guide/forum whenever a question arises, I think it can be done by anyone. Several high profile youtubers have great videos, like LinusTechTips (it's long because the first 38 mins is about choosing parts, and it covers different types of components which you won't be using in addition to the basics).

Anyway, for £600 you have a lot more options. This one, for example. Slower than the custom build I linked and I don't know how these no-name Amazon PCs fare in terms of build quality, aftermarket support, or bloatware, but for that price it's not bad. Huge improvement over a 1030 or 5600G.
